Xbox Live and Credit Card

Hi

I just got an Xbox Pro about two weeks ago to play Halo 3 on Xbox Live with some friends of mine.

I got an Xbox Live account, and I happily play.

Well, tonight i decided i'd go ahead and buy the other 3 maps. So i go to get some Microsoft Points and...

...i'm sickened at how easy it is.
No, really.. hear me out. Maybe i'm doing it wrong.

all I have to do is hit X and say i want more.. and then my credit card is charged. That seems way to easy. I mean, what if my roommate or some random stranger comes in and orders like 500 dollars worth of microsoft points.

And i can't figure out how to disassociate my credit card from my xbox live account. I can't even figure out how to make it ask for some sort of password before it just charges my credit card. Is there a way to make it a little more secure? I know on Wii whenever i want some nintendo points i have to put in my credit card info each time.. i'm TOTALLY fine with that. I can't get drunk and accidentally wind up with like 300 bucks in credit card bills (not that that happens, but you get my point)

Is there anything I can do?

I'm fairly certain you can make a password for your account that you have to put in to sign on.

There's an option to auto-remember your password. You can go to options and turn it off, which means you'll have to enter your password every time you want to sign in. Which is less convenient but will be protection against random asshats spending your money.

Q: Is there a maximum number of Points that I can have in my balance?

A: Yes, there is a limit. When you reach that limit, you will be notified that you've reached the maximum number.

Q: Is there a limit to how many Points I can purchase in a day?

A: There is not a per-day limit, but there is a limit per transaction. You'll be notified if you reach this limit.

Q: Is there a limit to how many Points I can redeem in a day?

A: Yes. If you reach this limit, you'll be notified, and you'll have to wait until the next day to redeem more Points.

Now, I have no idea what they mean by limit per transaction, but I have had $150 worth of microsoft points in my account at one time. Can't find the cutoff numbers anywhere (you can try calling 1-800-4my-xbox)

Yeah, MS needs to stop holding onto CC#s like that. The easiest way to get your CC# off there is to put like 10$ on a gift card (with the Visa or other equivalent logo), then buy points with it. it'll become the new CC# for the account, and it won't matter if you or someone else tries to buy points.

This is good advice. Not just for the 360 Marketplace, but for all credit card uses where you're not sure about the card number's security, or you want to limit your potential monetary liability (e.g. recurring subscriptions you don't want to recur).

Of course, for roommates and relatives and such, they can always just steal your real cards from your wallet/purse, but that's a whole other ball of wax. :P

Good start to the day. Pity it's going to be the worst one of your life. The light is now on.

I personally just buy the prepaid cards in-store for both Live subscriptions and MS Points. That way MS doesn't have ANY of my CC info.

Erm, I have 4 credit cards stored in the 360 since it launced - I could use any of them if the accounts weren't canceled already. I don't see how using a Visa debit card changes anything since you can't remove the old ones.

Yeah there's no one to just disassociate your CC from a Live account which sucks. I made a new account was going to let my younger brother use my old account but I couldn't figure out how to take off my CC, I think i'll have to call them

You can disassociate your CC from your account, but MS will keep a record of it forever. You can also set a password for your account with button codes, which is somewhere in the settings menu - it won't prevent your account being logged in, but it'll prevent it signing into Live.

How do you do this? I just don't want it to keep charging me monthly for my live account, it won't let me select a silver account so that i don't have to pay!

The repeat charging is apparently hard to get rid of - I've never done it myself, but I hear you need to ring Xbox Support on the day your year is up. Although ringing them beforehand can't hurt.

The automatic recharging is why I'm sticking to buying Live subscription cards.

MS has no way of canceling anything that uses their billing system other than calling billing support. It's really kinda stupid. Every other online recurring billing system I've used has usually had a one or two button-click cancellation system.

The weirdest thing I ever had happen with my X-Box Live account was that Microsoft randomly stopped billing my account in November and downgraded me to Silver status without me asking and despite the fact that there was no problem with the card used to pay my monthly fees. I finally got around to fixing it a couple of weeks ago and just switched it back to Gold. Never got an explanation as to why they downgraded me to Silver and didn't bill me for 2 months when I had ALWAYS had a Gold account.

Yep, the Zune pass is the same way.
