Just Got a Wii - What games should I get?

tsmvengytsmvengy Registered User regular
edited March 2008 in Games and Technology
So, I bought a Wii on Sunday, I need some good games to go with it. I'm looking for single-player stuff as well as local multiplayer (I have 4 roommates.) Here's what I'm thinking:

Updated List
No More Heroes
SSX Blur (I heard the controls are cool and I love Tricky)
SSBB (BRAWL)
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
RE4
[strike]Mario Strikers: Charged[/strike] (Loved the original but you guys said this sucks)
Mario Galaxy
Excite Truck (is it awesome?)

I have Wii Play already.

Any other suggestions? Or concerns as to why I shouldn't get those?

As for 4-player, I think I'm going to stick with 2 controllers/nunchucks for now and only have 4 players if others bring theirs over.

Aiming with the Wiimote is easier. The cursor is always on the screen, meaning when you hold the gun button, Leon will immediately point the gun where you are aiming. This drastically improves you in the game, shooting galleries, and Mercenaries. This does not apply to Sniper Rifles, though.

RE4 is pretty easy to aim on the Wii. Headshots everywhere.

I liked the original GC Strikers game, but Strikers Charged feels like a completely unrelated bastardization.

Also, Zelda, if you like Zelda, or want to like Zelda.

What about Super Mario Galaxy? I don't have a Wii personally, but from everything that I have heard it's a pretty damn good game.

Twilight Princess is probably another good choice.

Mario is a must. And I'm not really sure that SSX is worth your money.

Also check out the Virtual Console. I've been replaying Super Mario World and Super Metroid and having a blast.

The RE4 Wii controls are sublime; well worth the repurchase for diehard fans of the game, especially if you didn't get access to the PS2 extras before.

Definitely pick up Wii Play for the extra controller, since Laser Hockey + Tanks are worth the extra $10 alone for 2p multiplayer awesomeness. Also note that while Mario Strikers is blazingly great, to play with 4 people you'll need 4 full Wiimote + Nunchuk combos. But those two plus Wii Sports and Brawl will take care of your local multiplayer needs for a year or so. (Or until Mario Kart comes out, anyway.)

Either of the Trauma Center games
    Excite Truck
oh, and this little game you may or may not be aware of, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
EDIT: you have to get No More Heroes, seriously that game kicks entirely so much ass.

RE4 Wii edition is sublime, controls so much better than the Gamecube version, it feels like it was supposed to be played that way.

I can't imagine anyone not getting lots of enjoyment out of Super Mario Galaxy.

Do it. Its an awesome puzzle game thats hilariously fun. Its not kiddy, or easy. Im only on the first couple levels and spent many times scratching my head and restarting levels. The controls are beautiful, its just jawesome. Get it. It starts out way too easy, but after a couple levels its more likely to error on being too difficult.

Excite Truck is concentrated arcade fun, although the AI is kind of a bitch since it doesn't need to waste time trying to pull tricks for points and can be darn hard to keep up with on higher difficulties sometimes.

If you haven't played Godfather on another system, I'd recommend it too as a bargain buy. The controls are awesome - want to throw a right hook? Well, throw a right hook. It's also got a ton of content, amybe too much, actually since the extortion jobs get really repetitive, but the story mode and hit contracts are pretty cool and the game doesn't demand you do the monotonous extortion stuff if you'd rather skip it.

I also really like Trauma Center, and it should be cheap by now too.

Hey, you copied off my paper. :( OP, you'll definitely want to check out Circuit City by your area, as IIRC both Excite Truck and the first Trauma Center are clearanced out for $16.96, which are excellent steals. I'd buy ET if I had money. :(

And what's this about Mario Strikers Charged sucking? It most assuredly does not. Best local multiplayer game I've owned yet, though the single-player tournaments get über-cheap later on (which was a fault of the original game as well).

I have to agree that the difficulty on Strikers is just dumb. It isn't that the game itself is hard, it is that the computer cheats. It can somehow have all of its sidekicks lined up and ready for a goal while your teammates just run around like morons.

I was able to get the last boss on the Striker Cup while flawlessing everyone else and he just cheated the hell out of me. Once that happens, you have to start the cup all the way over. No fun at all.

If you have some friends you will be playing it with, I would grab it. It is a lot of fun playing against other humans. Say no to robots.

Games that are a must: Zak and Wiki (If you like point and click adventures it is like a drug), RE4, Mario Galaxy, Smash Brothers Brawl.

    I recommend:

    Mario Galaxy
    Smash Bros Brawl
    No More Heroes
    Zelda: TP
RE4: Wii Edition (yes, the controls really do make a difference, and it's 480p/ws, and budget price)
    Metroid Prime 3
    Zak and Wiki
Bully (if you don't own the PS2 vsn)
Super Paper Mario (if you enjoy quirky platforming/rpg hybrids with lighthearted scripts)
    Trauma Center Second Opinion
    Trauma Center New Blood
Geometry Wars Galaxies (a much bigger, better game than any other Geowars game)
Mario Strikers Charged (it's really good, esp. if you liked the first one)
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn (if you like really tough SRPGs)
Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles (if you're an RE fan, this has great atmosphere and more length and depth and variety than typical lightgun shooters)
    Battallion Wars 2
    Metal Slug Anthology
Excite Truck (for a good arcadey racer)
Guilty Gear Accent Core (for a good 2d fighter)
    Puzzle Quest
Sonic and the Secret Rings (if you're up for a challenging yet rewarding high-speed platformer)
Ghost Squad (for an inexpensive yet fun true arcade lightgun experience)
MLB Power Pros (for a great baseball game)

    Guitar Hero 3
Medal of Honor Heroes 2 (is good if you want a smooth fps with great controls and online play)

SSX Blur is good if you can enjoy the controls..

also decent games, depending on your taste: Godfather Blackhand, Rayman RR, DBZ Tenkaichi 3, Link's Crossbow Training, DQ Swords

I also recommend looking into the Virtual Console. There are TONS of great games there that you probably haven't played yet. I've been newly acquainted with Sin & Punishment, Gunstar Heroes, Castlevania IV, Bonk's Adventure, and a lot of other truly classic stuff from the VC.

edit: House of the Dead 2+3 comes out for Wii tomorrow, too, which I shall definitely be getting.

Get Zelda, Mario, and Smash Bros. These are non-negotiable. Zelda: Twilight Princess was the best goddamn game in the series and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Mario Galaxy is the best 3D platformer in existence and if you can only afford one Wii game right now that's the one. Smash Bros. needs no introduction.

If you regularly play video games with large groups of people, buy WarioWare. It's WarioWare: dozens of microgames, and while you can play it single-player, that kind of defeats the purpose. Passing the controller around a group of like twelve people until only one remains is awesome.

If you have any money left over, get No More Heroes and/or Metroid Prime 3. Really, I'd have trouble choosing between those two. Metroid Prime 3 damn near ruined other console FPS games for me; the controls are that good. No More Heroes combines brilliant writing with a fighting control scheme that uses just the right amount of waggle; not too much and not too little, although the game can drag out a bit during the free-roaming city parts.

If you never owned the PS2 version of Resident Evil 4, get the Wii version. Again, controls. Holy shit. I can't go back to old RE controls after this. Seriously, I'm not going to buy RE5 unless they give me a way to use the Wiimote with it.

That should just about cover it.

Also, there's really no reason to get more than 2 or 3 games right now, just buy more as you beat 'em. Who knows when prices will drop or some sale will crop up, just get Smash for playing with your buds and whichever of the "Nintendo Three" you like best. (Mario, Metroid, Zelda.) The games won't be leaving the shelves anytime soon.

I really fail to see how No More Heroes is a must.

Maybe I am just ignorant, but isn't it a anime meets wrestling spin off of GTA? All the videos and pictures I have seen made it seem like a very juvenile version of Kill Bill.

Good Lord, no on all accounts.

It's not "anime," it's not a "wrestling spinoff," and it's as sure as HELL not a GTA clone What. So. Ever.

If you're looking at, let alone playing, NMH and expecting GTA, you've mistaken reverent parody for what you think is some kind of intentional copying of some sort.

I would have to say Super Paper Mario is the most disappointing game that I have bought for the Wii. The story and writing are far from clever. It was a basic bland story that tried to add in pop culture for humor. I felt like I was playing a game written for 10 year olds (which it probably was the target audience). The decent platforming (it needed more of it) was what saved the game from being an almost complete stinker. I really didn't feel there were any RPG elements aside from items and life... but that can be called an adventure game. RPG gets thrown around too much. The puzzles that involved the star helpers were easy and the story puzzles just bordered on torture.

    Was it really fun to go through an entire level, get to a spot with three blocks and have no idea what to do? Go back and talk to a guy that makes you type "Please" five times to get him to finally tell you to hit them in the order of "L R L M R L M M R L R M L R L M R L M M R L R M L R L M R L M M R L R M L R L M R L M M R L R M" forcing you get a notepad and write the shit down? Yeah. Fun... I'll get back to grinding 40 levels in Everquest.

Or the other puzzle that forces you to run on a treadmill for 4 minutes (literally) so that you can have enough money to buy a code to a vault. Awesome.

So yeah. I wouldn't recommend it.

I will have to give No More Heroes another look though.

Edit: That article you posted is the reason I hate blogs. Holy shit. "But No More Heroes creates unlikely fountains of copious blood and coins that spout joyfully, almost musically, from the severed heads of the legions of identical aggressors loudly bemoaning their spleens – it’s almost as if Suda and GHM were laughing at us." Did the writer take a page from Tycho? Also that article pretty much just said what most other reviews/previews have said of the game. I guess I will have to try it to understand what it is about. Still sounds like a sandbox with Kill Bill type style and humor.

I enjoyed Strikers, but I'd have a hard time recommending it at full price. I mean, it's solid, fun and not short by any means- but it gets too frustrating too fast. There's challenging and then there's unfair. This game dances on the line between the two far, far too much.

If you can find three other people who want to play it with you, though, I'd absolutely say buy.

I treat it more like how I play fighting or racing games -- I typically ignore the entire single-player campaign and just do quick matches for when I want a quick 20-30 minutes of adrenaline. There's something very visceral about the game -- full-body checks and absurd power shots. It's more like hockey than soccer, just mixed with Mario Kart items and such.

The somewhat disjointed free-roaming GTA parts are pretty shite, apparently, but when you get into the actual missions of taking down assassins it's definitely a highly stylized beat 'em up action title.

I've been avoiding it primarily due to lack of funds but also because I'm a bit gunshy to anything Suda51/Grasshopper touches, since I've found most of their stuff to be all style, no substance. But NMH actually looks to have a fun, solid game underneath.

The thing is that it's not meant to be like GTA. It's overworld presentation is an allusion to the GTA series, but there are hundreds of allusions to all kinds of things in the game.

The "overworld" is more of a hub between missions rather than a "sandbox world." If you play it expecting a sandbox game - which it is not meant to be - then you will be disappointed.

Is it like the side scrolling beat'em ups of the past? I suppose you could analogize it somewhat to that; although there is more depth than something like Streets of Rage. The combat system combines the fighting system with functional Wii movements that not only work but are satisfying to pull off, while at the same time not overly abusing the wii motion controls to make it tiresome.

The jobs in between battles poke fun at the nature of videogames, but they are fun in and of themselves. The contract jobs between battles are fun in an arcadey, kill-as-quickly-as possible type of way. Arcadey gameplay is one of the themes of the game (of many).

Killing hundreds of same-looking lackeys goes to that, but these guys serve mostly as "warm-ups" for the main battles against the Assassins, which is the primary gameplay purpose of the game. The boss battles are always intriguing, interesting, and fun. The bosses all have a unique design, unique personalities, and unique moves and attack patterns and strengths and weaknesses. There are a good number of "surprises" in the boss battles, but I won't spoil it.

One of the greatest aspects of the game, though, is the presentation of the story. Rather than the story itself, which is actually very good and always keeps you playing and motivating you to move on, but the presentation and style of the story is incredibly well done and unique. The trailers and ads for the game do not do this justice, as those videos and screenshots cannot show the best parts of the game both due to the fact that there is often much stylistic violence involved as well as major plot spoilers. There are some major "plot twists" that both poke fun at videogame stories and archetypes, and then the game turns those on their head when you least expect it.

On top of that, there are tons of allusions and references to many things - movies, music, other videogames, and past Suda51 games. There are tons of references to many things past and present in the gaming industry, and usually these vary from small nods to reverent parodies. some are obvious and some are small. It's fun to notice these little things as you play through.

If you ask me, the game strikes a good balance between accessible gameplay and variety of bosses and tasks to be just right, and the game does, in my opinion, last just the right amount of time. I think I played it for a little over 10 hours, and when I finished, it felt like the time just flew by. Every time I finished an assassination, all I could think about was moving forward and training and gaining the money to advance to the next assasination just to see everything that the game has to provide next. It's fun.

In short - the game is very, very fun and there's nothing else out there like it in terms of presentation or gameplay implementation, and incorporates the Wii interface extremely well. Play it with the wiimote speaker on ;) - trust me. Also, play it on Mild rather than Sweet.

This is why it's a must-buy for the Wii.

I'm not quite sure you understand what kind of humor we're talking here. This is not generic, juvenile, typical "anime" humor, or whatever. This is humor that pokes fun, in good nature, at the gaming industry and 'otaku' culture. It's not like a random string of parodies and jokes. Sometimes it's the subtle things, sometimes it's the overt things, and sometimes it's the dialogue, and sometimes its how the game surprises you by what actually occurs to your surprise; a lot of these things are just good, genuinely funny humor. If you're a fan of videogames, chances are, you'll find something humorous to appreciate in this game.

Great post, slash, damn fuckin' straight

No More Heroes is a must buy because it's one of only a handful of successful satirical video games, and it's fucking hugely entertaining.

    Brawl, SMGalaxy, Zelda TP

To a lesser extent I enjoyed Bleach: The Shattered Blade, but you'd probably have to like the anime/manga. Mario Strikers I didnt really care for too much, I probably regret buying that.

Haven't played Metroid Prime 3 or No More Heroes yet...

See also: Bully Scholarship Edition. Bought it at the weekend and am so hooked.

Also, I understand that the Lego Starwars is very good although despite buying it at the weekend also I have yet to play it.
