The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Twentieth Century Fox has set Mila Kunis to star opposite Mark Wahlberg in "Max Payne," the John Moore-directed action adaptation of the Rockstar videogame.
Kunis, best known for a long run on "That '70s Show" and voicing the androgynous teen Meg Griffin in "Family Guy," will play an assassin who teams up with the title character to avenge her sister's death. Wahlberg plays Payne, a cop haunted by the tragic loss of his family who finds himself in the thick of a conspiracy when he investigates a series of murders.
Beau Thorne scripted. Julie Silverman and Scott Faye are producers. Tom Karnowski is exec producer.
Kunis next stars alongside Jason Segel and Kristen Bell in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," which Universal releases April 18.
Well, there is one more video game movie to add to the list.
Mila Kunis as Mona? Fucking serious? Jesus christ... From the guy who brought you The Omen (2006, not to disparage the original with Gregory Peck!) and Behind Enemy Lines comes the rape of a franchise that should have been impossible to fuck up.
To be honest I don't mind Wahlberg as Payne - he very naturally does the look of permanent constipation that marked Max Payne 1. However, apart from being a hottie of note and doing actually pretty decent voice work on Family Guy and Robot Chicken, I'm also of the mind that she simply doesn't have the look (or presence) to pull off stone-cold Mona Sax.
I never understood why Max Payne 2 for PC wasn't an incredi-hit. The graphics were spectacular and the action was phenomenal. If they manage to be intelligent about including bullet time, and actually have Max popping painkillers the whole way through the movie, it may not be too shabby*.
It'll probably suck. But I want it to be awesome, and so do you!

Yes, I want it to be awesome. I've always wanted it to be awesome, it's just not going to BE awesome. I seriously don't see how they could have fucked this up, you can basically take the game AS IS and turn it into a movie but nooooooooooooooo...
I only need three things from this movie to be happy, honestly:
1. The Max Payne Theme Music
2. Plenty of Over-the-top film noir metaphors
3. Lots of Slow Motion
If it delivers all three, I'll be satisfied, and I'm a huge Max Payne fan. I'm secretly hoping for a third game that ties in with the movie. I'm really glad this movie is finally getting made, since after the very unfortunate performance of the second game, this may be my best shot at getting any new Max Payne content.

Mila Kunis is a horrible mona, she's annoying not alluring and dangerous. It would be hard to pick a good mona. I'd say that Linda Hamilton circa t2 could pull it off, but she'd be a bit too hard ass not enough suave seductive killer. Sarah Clarke would be a good fit since she already kind of played the roll, she just doesn't have the big curves that mona did, but then again neither does Kunis.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
It really shouldn't be that difficult to pull off a MP movie. All they need is some good dialogue, a halfway decent cinematographer, and a story that doesn't, like, involve aliens or something.
You all know how these things can turn out, though

Why would they need good dialogue?

That barrel is like a cold steel pole that you lick and get your tongue stuck on.
I'm cautiously optimistic about this movie. My only gripe is the aforementioned Mila Kunis as Mona. She's just too damn short to pull it off. Everything else? I can dig it.

This thread is weird because people seem to imply that either Mark Wahlberg is a bad actor or that most people assume he is.
I don't think I've ever disliked Mark Wahlberg in a role I've seen him play.
He was excellent in The Big Hit, he was the best in "The Departed" (fuck Damon and DiCapprio - same tired bullshit from them both - Wahlberg, on the other hand, was hilarious), Boogie Nights was fantastic, and so on.

This should be good.
I think a great deal of the Wahlberg-whacking comes from the fact that he was Marky Mark of the Funky Bunch and subsequently an underwear model. No, it's not fair, but it's really really hard to overcome the stigma of being a musical talent who decides to be an actor.
And you're totally right about The Departed, he was absolutely hilarious.

Those people are just jealous. They wish they were as awesome as him
Taken out of context, some of the dialogue in Max Payne was pretty horrible... I have to admire the optimism that some of you have. You know, despite the fact that every movie made that was based on a video game failed miserably.
Jeez, that was Wahlberg in The Departed? I guess I haven't seen him in anything in years so I wasn't paying attention. I'm sure he's a fine actor, but I thought that character was trying too hard for the guffaws. Broke the suspension of disbelief for me. I know it's a Scorsese film, but it just fell flat after a while.
I think most pretty-boy actors are underrated (DiCaprio, Pitt, etc.) but even though Matt Damon did well in the Bourne movies, I can't forgive him for the lameness in Saving Private Ryan.
Wait, what are we talking about? This post needs a link to a YouTube of a Max Payne fan film!

Plus they're not really going to pull off anything more awesome than this anyway (link to hi-res).
I'll admit, I enjoyed it too.
That said, apparently this is (at least partly) being filmed up the street from where I work.
Let us know if you start experiencing sudden weird time dilation effects.

Slow motion action and lots of typical noir dialogue
C'mon, that's all it takes
Until I saw The Departed.
He'll probably do well in the role.

edit: oh and it's shooter, not the shooter.

Absolutely. Hell they should just get Sam Lake to be Max Payne.

QFT. That whole movie was fantastic. I love how he managed to keep a straight face when engaging in the equivalents of tourettes.

I really hope this is at least bad-good. I will be very pleasantly surprised if it's REAL good and keeps the overwrought dialogue, at least in part.
EDIT: Oh, another complaint, supposedly they are aiming for a PG-13 rating. the fuck? Even if that WAS Max Payne's demographic, that was 7 years ago.
He's got the dorky grin down in that last shot, the one we see on the happy-go-lucky Max Payne from the first couple "pages" in the game.
Must be a shock going from his delivery in The Departed to the overwrought metaphors of Remedy's fumbling attempt at film noir narration.

I bought this game day one (the PS2 version), and in the back of the instruction manual it says "Max Payne Movie is coming soon!"
Seven years later, I was starting to lose hope.
