Ok, I've done threads like this before and they've been pretty helpful, so I figured maybe someone here can help. I need to write a research paper later this month on two films that qualify as metafiction. I'm having trouble coming up with a topic because I just don't know that many films that are metafiction, aside from Stranger than Fiction and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas which I haven't seen. Basically, I'm not looking for anybody to write my paper or anything, I just need help coming up with a topic.

Has anyone here seen any films that count as a metafiction? I was thinking that Fight Club breaks the fourth wall quite a few times, would that count as a metafiction? I'm kinda confused.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang breaks the fourth wall quite a bit too.
    Awesome movie to boot.

I forgot to mention, it would also help if the films were about writers. We've done a lot of films this semester that focus on writers, and they also kind of let the viewer know how they're written. I think we also did an X-Files episode called Milagro, where this writer was writing a story about Scully and almost killed her or something.

Hmm, besides Kiss Kiss Bang Bang all I can think of is Annie Hall - Woody Allen directly addresses the audience several times in that.

Adaptation seems kind of like what you're looking for.

Yeah, Adaptation is a real good example. Unfortunately it's on my syllabus for the course, and according to my instructor I need to use one film that's not on my syllabus.

Lemme just post the movies we're studying in class:

    The X-Files: Milagro
    Stranger than Fiction
    Following
    Croupier
    Naked Lunch
    Barton Fink
    Adaptation
a play called "The Four of Us"

and there's a couple more that I can't recall at the moment.

Possibly a mockumentary, like Waiting for Guffman or This is Spinal Tap?

In studying for a film studies class I'm taking, I thought of something that might interest you.

You could talk about filmic exhibition & voyeurism with regard to metafiction and how we understand it. "Through the glass, darkly" and all that.

This excerpt by Christian Metz can be found on google books, but I've uploaded a pdf for easier access:

Parts of it may seem a bit outdated, but it should help give you some ideas.
