Given that, the visual work is very, very good and worth watching for that alone.
This is essentially what I was driving at when I said "I don't see the point". Pirate Baby was clearly an emulation of a beat 'em up. It started at the beginning of the "game", from the setup of the "damsel in distress" plot to the defeat of the end boss. It was clearly divided into scenes that represented individual levels. It flowed from one point to another.
This... it's just all over the place. Yes, I get that it's the story of an alien invasion. But the setting changes so rapidly and there's so much obnoxious flashing light that the impression I get is all garbled. You barely get a chance to process what's happening before they move on to the next clip. I'll grant that that could be the point, a parody of the hyperactive pace of certain styles of Japanese games, but it doesn't change the fact that the initial feeling I got from it was distinctly unpleasant and contrary to the expectations I brought with me from Pirate Baby.
I'm "kupiyupaekio" on Discord.
Whoa, that little cosmic girl just Cure 3:d shit up!

I loved PBCBSF2k6, but I have to echo most other people in the thread; this is bigger and flashier but it's not quite as effective.
I don't know quite how to explain it, but it feels like he's made this work a parody of anime cliches so that he doesn't have to come up with a better justification for its existence. Where PB was a genuine love note to awe-inspiring and hyperactive brawlers, this feels awkward and lost. It's not about anything in the same way PB was, and that makes me a little sad.
If all this was done out of a love of games, he wouldn't be making movies about games. With talent like his, he'd be making them. If there's anything he likes about games, it's the pixelart, and that's it. He must have a strong dislike for the games themselves, if he chooses to just make movies about the videogame aesthetic. I'll stand corrected if anybody finds evidence of him using his talents in a real game, but right now it looks like he has no interest in the actual medium.
Need more random fun like this.
Oh I watched Pirate Baby before this and I enjoyed it as well. It was a bit too one sided in terms of progression in the fights but I suppose that's how a actual beat'em up would be like at good skill levels.
I think I enjoyed this a bit better because I like those separate heroes fighting their own battles that eventually all gather somehow to fight an overarching enemy deals. For example like in LiveALive.
Hmm now that you mention it, it does feel a similar in the beginning. Daicon IV felt really complete with the rejuvenating the planet part leading up the mass amalgamation in the end.
The ending of Kings did feel a little unsatisfying.
