Don't get me wrong, it's boring at first. Once you get the grappling gun though? Sweet. I just got the second Heavy Drop thing and it's a boring jeep, I want the gyrocopter. Anyone else do fun on this game? It's super good if you're into fun.
I played the demo and suspected I didn't have quite as much fun, so I've not bought it yet. I can see how it's get good though, in that "I'm just going to dick about doing physically-impossible stunts all day" way.
At the start it's a bit "hmm phhh yeah wuh" but then after a while the dicking around gets really good. Unlike GTA you can go SUPER HIGH in helicopters. The locale is really great too, and different from your typical setting.

it's pretty much crackdown, puerto rico style
minus the city block destruction
and that's an ok thing
also, isn't it a greatest hits now, or at least like $20?
I spent hours playing this game where I would fly the gyrocopter really high, then parachute out of it. The gyrocopter is the point where the game completely opens up.
That was my preferred method of insertion for all the missions.
I never did finish it though, I spent too much time messing around and eventually traded it in. What time I did spend with it was most awesome, and I hope the sequel is good.

And Just Cause was great, just 'cause. It's like Crackdown. Technically speaking, it has a lot of problems. And if I had my professional review hat on, I wouldn't really say it was anything special. But it's one of those games where the fuckawesome outweighs the shittastic.
I always thought it had potential, but the demo made it seem very limited, with not much variety. It is just $20 on Steam, though. How good is the PC version?

See, this talk of going up really far then parachuting down is making me think of MDK, and how much I loved the ribbon-chute thing in that. I now want to do some high-altitude parachuting.

Yes. The parachuting was my favorite thing in the game. That and free falling for what seemed like a full minute or two before opening the chute at the last second.
You can go really really high up in this game. I forget what the ceiling is, but it's absurd.

Not that much actually, I like games where you can do awesome stuff. I wouldn't be excited about Saint's Row for instance, because it's just running around killing stuff. Parachuting and grappling onto planes and stuff, that's fun. I heard Crackdown was fun (I think I got it and Saint's Row confused) and I didn't like it because it wasn't any more special than just jumping pretty high (not even that high) and shooting stuff so far away you couldn't even see it. Crackdown was like Hulk for people who have a heart condition and can't be overly excited.
One of the best things to do is line up a really long speedboat run towards an island, floor it, and just start firing rockets. The boat goes about as fast as the rockets, so you can get a good dozen or so flying in formation before they hit anything.
I didn't really dig the demo for the first one, but I'm looking forward a bit more to the second one because they redid the engine and they don't have to worry about accommodating the last gen systems.
I enjoyed Crackdown, mainly because I can be entertained for hours simply by perching on top of a speeding car, shooting out the tyres on other cars, and watching them roll and flip. Then I blow them up. It does sound like it could do with some serious Hulk-ification though.
With that in mind, I do still really need to pick up a copy of H:UD and if I see a cheap copy of Just 'cuz, I'll impulse-buy that as well.

...crackdown was pretty much about massive explosions all the time. Whats not to love?
I tried the demo on steam and couldn't really do shit with the controls, is it any better on the 360? If so I might look into getting this, saw it at Game Stop for $15 yesterday.

Just Cause is one of the few games I own two copies of. Really looking forward to the sequel. Graphics are brilliant on the 360.
Despite it's mediocre reviews I loved the hell out of this game. The environments are absolutely stunning and the exploration is really the most fun, even if there isn't too much out there.
Here's a tip for you Tube, call in a drop and then grapple onto the drop plane on it's way out. It will take you up to the maximum height where you can enjoy a leisurely 3 minute free fall through the stratosphere.
Probably my greatest moment ever was driving a jeep at full speed off of a cliff (while mounted on the car) and jumping to a jet that screaming by at hundreds of miles per hour in what was one of the most random encounters I've ever had in a video game. I was just trying to jump off the jeep to activate the chute and the jet triggered the context sensitive buttons.
Also, once you get the boat the game becomes a lot more fun.
The demo was pretty fun, parachuting into the air and landing on the back of a car etc etc. It really fell apart for me when you started fighting guys. What's the deal with the main character being almost invulnerable to bullets? He can just stand there soaking up fire and not take much damage.
Early on in the game you'll have little trouble plowing through most anything but the enemies get beefier and get much better cars and weapons about half way through.
Mastering the helicopter that has the missiles on it is slightly ridiculous but then again, the entire game is pretty ridiculous.

loved the entire game up until the last mission.
fucking unimaginative game ender bullshit.
but yes, I spent so much time just parachuting and listening to the music. I also really enjoyed the looks of the game while under water, or in the middle of the jungle.
To be fair I had just gotten my philips 47" display with ambilight, so like, my whole rec room would be glowing the same colour as the game.
This is the only game I got every single achievement for, took me well over a year and had a blast doing it. If it wasn't for my terrible need to give games in the hope they would get recognised, I'd still be playing the shit out of it.
So I went as high as possible once in a chopper, bailed out and sky-dived for a good three minute or two. Then I got hit by a fucking plane. I survived. Rico is hardcore.
I can't believe how good the controls are on the PC. Most gta clones on the PC play like shit, but in Just Cause mouselooking and aiming work like a charm.
Thanks for making this thread, Tube. If it weren't for you, I probably would've never given this game a chance. I owe you a beer or a blowjob or both.

I didn't even know about ambilight until your post. Holy shit, I want one of those displays. I watched the demo video of it on the site and it was incredible. I hear you can even get fans for some of them, or they come with them, so that when a big explosion is on the screen, you'll get a blast of wind in your face. I don't know how that would really feel after awhile, though.
Edit: It looks like Auera is the successor to Ambilight, and the entire frame actually lights up instead of lights on the side. This demonstration on the site is cool as shit: http://www.aurea.philips.com/

so i just bought this game for about 20 bucks because of this thread
i am expecting, at some point, hilarious vehicle-leaping hijinx
i hope i am not disappointed.
the only thing that would make GTA IV more excellent, by the sounds of it, would be a similar dangle-from-vehicles kind of thing. action movie style vehicle stunts are fucking fun.
Tried out the demo on the xbox the other day, its controls are much much better than on PC. I was having quite a bit of fun until I jumped out of a helicoptor at 2000 feet....and realized about 1000 feet later I didn't have a parachute for whatever reason.

I'm guessing you consolers got the long end of the stick on this one.
And again, the sky is impressive, as are the explosions. Its a blast in the pimped-up car; like being in one of Antonio Banderas' cheese dreams.
