Mm.. it's not too bad. Enemies either rush you (but can only fight close up) or don't rush, but can shoot you. It uses a cover system similar to Gears of War. It gets easier as you go as you can upgrade your weapons and you gain new abilities like shield and stealth.
I didn't think the game was too hard, really. I even managed to finish it on the 'brutal' difficulty without too much trouble. That being said, you have to play it somewhat slowly as rushing will get your ass nailed to the wall.
I was gonna make a thread on this. For being the first "Next Gen" game ever announced, there sure isn't a lot of talk about it. Yes, the game can be best described as Gears of War with a cool magic frisbee thing, so it's fairly decent, if a bit easy. The glaive is cool though.
I'd just like to say that I really wish they had stuck with the sci-fi setting rather than the gritty, brown, ruined abandoned city like every other game released this gen. Seriously, I'm sick of it.

I think they go for the gritty, brown, ruined city look because it makes the Graphics look a hell of a lot better.
I have no idea what the story is, but I can control the glaive (ala Heavenly Sword) and cut people in two, so it is forgiven.
Holy shit, I remember watching that movie as a kid but I never knew what it was called. Now I HAVE to find a copy!

Yeah, there isn't a whole lot of difference (at least that I noticed) between the normal and brutal difficulty level. There's a handful of weapons to buy and a decent selection of weapon upgrades, but all upgrades are PERMANENT. It's pretty easy to screw up a weapon and not realize it until it's too late to go back and fix it (by reloading a checkpoint). For instance, my brother bought an AK-74 and put on double shot, clip increase, and two rate of fire upgrades. The result was a gun that killed a clip and less than a second and couldn't hit squat.
On the upside, the "glaive" (the throwing weapon you get) is virtually all you need to beat the game. You can charge up (even in blindfire mode) for a quadruple strength throw and just go to town on 2-3 enemies at a time with the "aftertouch" (time slows down and you control the weapon's flight). You also get rumble feedback on the control so you can feel when you should throw the glaive. The extra powers are enough to be very useful at the right times, but there's only a couple (which is still good since you aren't swapping powers in the middle of a fight).
Yeah, the story is kinda meh, but it still makes more sense than something like, say, RE4. It's also got a couple twists and you get to exact some delightfully pointy revenge. Oh, and as far as enemies go, yeah, there a couple types that rush you. However, your shield power deflects hand to hand attacks (as well as deflecting all projectiles that hit the shield at whatever you happen to be pointing at with the reticle, which is pretty awesome) and a charged glaive throw through a mob usually ends up with heads coming off on the way out and torsos flying at you on the way back (the glaive kills stuff while flying away from you and returning to you, but you can only control the outbound flight). Your melee attack is pretty weak, though, and the glaive moves so fast that you're usually better off just throwing it at enemies instead trying to melee them.
The pace of the game feels a little slow, but that's largely because you're pretty screwed if you just rush out to attack enemies. You can take hits, but you're not invincible. Oh, did I mention the glaive can retrieve weapons and ammo for you? Because it can. If you're having a tough time with a fight, you can always steal a dead soldier's weapon by throwing the glaive at it and fire it until it self-destructs (all picked up weapons self-destruct after a brief time, but your own weapons last forever and you can never put them down).
I'd say the game is at least a 7 (maybe more for actually being a lot of fun with the glaive throwing, which really should get old but somehow never did), but it's a definite rental. I had a lot of fun with it, but I'd never drop 60 bucks on a game this short.

The developers said they decided to go for a post apocolyptic ruined city setting because it made the main character's abilities more unusual and unique as opposed to them in the sci-fi setting.

I think if they had kept to the original concept this game would have done better.
I am finding it hard to find a post concerning this game.
Is this game any good and what are peoples views on it.
I kinda wrote it off after the complete redesign. It originally, years ago, had some sort of cyber-stealth-ninja-in-space thing going on, now it's just a guy in a warzone with some kind of flying blade?
Everything about this game that I've seen screams "generic", and even the advertisement on television is like a checklist of video game advertisement cliches.
I played through the entire PS3 version, and it's an enjoyable game. Has more of an RE4 feel than a Gears feel. The combat is slower and more tactical than Gears, and the Glaive is a centerpiece to many of the boss battles and simple puzzles.
Also, (minor spoiler)
You do end up looking like the guy from the original trailer in the last couple of levels of the game
Overall I had a lot of fun with it and I'll probably play through it again as it's of a decent length (about 10 hours). Slicing guys in half never gets old. The multiplayer is kind of an afterthought.
Also this game has shades of The Guyver to its art direction, which I think is awesome.

Bought this game today and am pretty much in love with it cause it feels so much like Resident Evil 4 in HD.
I hope some people from PA have this game cause I would LOVE to play some multiplayer.
I have heard it can get frustrating fighting many enemies at once.
Not at all. I typically back off and use the basic glaive throw. Or use the shotgun for real crowd-control or when I need to keep moving.
The only part that's been frustrating so far is a timed glaive-throwing puzzle in the middle of the game that went on for one or two rooms longer than it should've. And I got it on my 2nd try. The boss fights so far have been awesome.
It definitely feels like RE4 and Gears knocked boots and had what MC Chris would call a "fucked up flipper baby." The context button finisher is a touch from RE, some of the ambushes and levels have the same vibe, the plot is pretty similar but without the escort mission. (yay!) And the controls are nearly identical to Gears, except with an incredibly useful weapon bound to RB instead of an obsessive-compulsive reload mechanic.
I wish they had made the entire game based around the 8th and 9th levels. All the levels before it just felt like gears of war, and it took till almost the end of the game for them to completely develop the infection powers from "cheap gimmick" to "actual game play mechanic".
Honestly the only time I found myself using the glaive is during puzzles/battles that required it, and when I ran out of ammo which was sadly quite often.
So after drudging through the whole game and hitting levels 8-9 the game started to pick up but then came crashing down again for me on the last one where I ran through the whole section (minus the boss fight) only using the glaive due to the oh too often occurrence of an empty gun.
Don't get me wrong, once the game really got going it was fantastic it just suffered a bit to much repetitiveness and it seemed like the game was originally designed to be more focused on shooting, thus when you hit those zombie levels it kind of threw a wrench into things with no dropped weapons and lack of ammo crates.
Personally story wise, I think mixing the two would have been fantastic. Keep the "Metal Gear Solid goes to space" idea, but also throw in the "Deadly Zombie Virus". Lets not kid ourselves here, if someone made a zombies in space game you know you would be all over that shit.
One thing that needs to be ranted about though, ammo crates: yes they are scarce and thats a problem, yes they barely stand out and the shiny film effect is often missed, and yes they are always in the most inconvenient places.
But what really gets me is actually acquiring the ammo inside. First you have to look directly at your feet, then you have to use the annoyingly long kick animation to break open the crate which if not lined up right can miss, and then on top of it all you have to stand there for a few seconds holding down a button while your character picks it up? Are you kidding me?
Call me lazy, but for gods sakes its a faced paced shooter. I should be able to run over those ammo crates and have my character absorb them through his feet like every other action hero out there. I dont want to take a five second break from an intense fight sequence just so I can acquire a few bullets!
EDIT: I feel it needs to be said that people need to produce games with a color pallet consisting of more than several shades of dog shit and rust.

I would love to do some PA multiplayer tonight,so everyone who owns the game and wants to kill eachother with glaives needs to add me to his friends!
Now that I've seen the original vision, I don't think I could play this game without being supremely dissapointed with it.
They went from something so unique and slick to what essentially looks like a Gears of War ripoff with a decapitation weapon. Not buying their excuse for the switch either. They tried to appeal to the GoW people for money.
Honestly the only time I found myself using the glaive is during puzzles/battles that required it, and when I ran out of ammo which was sadly quite often.
I found myself using it heavily specifically to conserve ammo, and because the basic throw owns rushing zombies in close quarters. Also, using it to flank the shield guys and scout around corners worked great. The biggest problem I had with the glaive was that many ambushes and weapon emplacements were a little too conspicuously juuust out of range. I know why. Some sections would be way too easy if you could clear them with aftertouch power throw decaps. But they could've been more subtle.
The one reason I haven't finished this yet is, I'm getting really really bored with sci-fi zombies. Bored with flood, plagas, headcrabs, notzombies, husks, mind-controlled colonists, borg, and now technocysts. That entire fucking cliche needs to be buried in a time capsule in the Nevada desert for a decade or two. So that a future generation can dig it up and see what shitty, unimaginative writing in games was like before the Great Purge.

We're already scheduled to start taking your nuclear waste. We don't need cliches too.
I hate to do this but ARISE DYING THREAD!
I don't wanna create a new one
Anyway, I just got past the stalker and damn, that was hard. I kept forgetting about the shied and so it ended up taking 6 months
Obiviously I kept leaving the game and coming back to it a while after but still 6 MONTHS! Pay-off was nice though.
I started playing this game again last week, it's a lot of fun

Is somebody talking about Dark Sector? I feel a tingling like somebody's talking about Dark Sector. I still run through this every once in a while. It's the only game I can think of that less people understand my affection for than the new Bionic Commando.
I made the mistake of picking up the PC version during the Steam holiday sale because it was like no dollars. Turns out it has a major bug in widescreen which causes the screen to stretch vertically, distorting the image and cutting off the top and bottom of the screen. Only happens when running full screen widescreen. Windowed widescreen and anything 4:3 will work fine. Pretty much no hope of ever seeing a patch for it, so on the off chance someone decides to look into the game now, stick to the PS360.

That part right there. Right after the stalker. That's where the game gets so good.
It's RE4 meets Gears of War, but kind of short and low on different weapons/enemies. Solid rental, though.
Perfect summarization. I rented it, enjoyed it. But it's just not a keeper. It's dirt cheap at GameStop too if you so desire. Multiplayer is dead, so you'll only get so many achievements out of it.
Klyka's LP of this is pretty much my only exposure to this game. While some parts looked fun, other parts looked downright frustrating. Out of curiosity, is MP for this pretty much dead? If not I may pick this up from EB or Goozex.

It's pretty much dead. The single player though has a pretty good entertainment hours/dollars ratio.
I think I paid about $9 dollars for it, which was made up when you
get the stealth power and sneak around snapping necks
Also I didn't really use the shield either except for rockets maybe. It seemed easier just to spam dodge.
Yeah, I didn't use shield mostly because I forgot it was there. Also, I completely forgot Klyka's LP existed, which is hilarious because I got the game the same time he started doing his LP. I even played alongside the LP up until I got some other games and was subsequently bored with this. Shit, all those lost hours on Stalker boss, when all I had to do was find Klyka's LP

My LP saves lives.
Also,I am happy to see this thread on the front page because as everyone who saw my LP knows,I loved the shit out of this game.
I just like the fact that its very Metroid-y in the weapon and skills type of way. You're not given all the tools straight away, you're slowly given a new move/ability as the game progresses and its handled really well. Just when things are getting stale, BAM! You got a new ability. Pacing is nigh on perfect.
I did have a major fuck up where I sold all my weapons for that bad ass revolver, Hammer or something. Turns out there's very little ammo for it and because I previously had been buying shit, I didn't get much money from that same stuff being sold. So I had to play from chapter 3 to 7 using the Glaive for the vast majority of it. I came across a few Black Market sewers, I just didn't have the monies to buy anything worth buying because of my early stupidity.
Bot now I got the Korblov or whatvever its called. It is a meaty bastard.
Carving dudes up with the glaive aftertouch was neat. As derived as it was from every other third person shooter/actioner, gotta admit I had a lot of fun with this game and the opening was awesome.

Revolver + glaive is my standard loadout. Half the time I don't even bother with a rifle or shotgun. Revolver + damage + enferon + headshot will one shot pretty much anything in the game. And the glaive... The glaive is life.
I'm pretty stunned at how right you are Monger. I never noticed it before, but ever since I picked up this Rifle (the most powerful one apparently) I hardly used it. The glaive takes care of eveything and its much easier to use now with the sneaking around invisible shit. The only time I used the rifles was against the last two bosses.
Klyka, may you have a great many children. Your LP was a huge help toward the end. I didn't die once on the last boss and the luckily, I stopped watching your LP just shy of the big reveal at the end of the second to last boss. So it was still a big WTF!? moment.Cheers my European homie.
