I don't know why I am having so much trouble choosing a name, but I have been trying to find one for over a year that I like. I have went through about four names and didn't like any of them, and now my live account has expired and it is time for a new one and I have no idea. If anyone could post suggestions for names or how you chose your name it would help a lot.
I started using my real name online a bit over three years ago now, and I haven't looked back. (For the morbidly curious, I wrote about it here - second entry from the top). It's more unique, it reduces the chance of people butchering the pronunciation of your name over voice chat, and it just seems *friendlier* to me. It's neat playing TF2 on a public server and hearing a complete stranger say "Thanks for the heals, Kate!" And maybe I'm weird this way, but I automatically like people more if their name sounds like, well, a name, instead of an internet meme or a random collection of letters. If I'm playing as a medic, and I have two demomen in front of me, one named "Dave is Raged" and one named "[TA]$h4rP$h0073r," I am going to focus my healing on Dave every time unless the other guy is on fire and screaming for help. Playing with someone who uses their real name, to me, is kind of like talking to someone who uses capitalization and punctuation instead of txt spk in-game: it doesn't mean they're actually more intelligent or anything, they just *seem* like they are somehow.
JimmyTheFizbanner? JackFizban? To me, either of those would sound better than something like Fizban1782. Or if you have a marginally cool last name, use that instead of your first name.
I like that real name idea, but my last name seems impossible for everyone to pronounce and my first name can also be a girls name and that is never a good idea for live.
Middle name? Awesome-grandfather-who-fought-in-World-War-II's name? Name you always wished your parents had given you? Or is there any way you could, you know, man up your first name? I have MST3K on the brain after responding to that other post, but man, ain't no way anybody could be confused about the gender of, say, JesseMcThornBody or KrisRockgroin.
The variations I did with your forum name were quick and dirty, but they certainly aren't all you can do.
My Live handle is "PrimusD", which I chose for a few reasons: I didn't want to use "DarkPrimus" or put in numbers, everyone on PA still knowns who I am from the name, people end up calling me "Primus" instead of "Dark".
Mine is maggotgal which comes from an experience I had at forensic camp (smokeyduck was already taken). I would suggest something that has meaning for you as it cuts down on the probability of someone already having that Tag.
I second Doctor Jan Itor. Especially since Doctor Acula is probably taken.
I've been EnderWiggin13 on everything since the dawn of the internets and before, as EnderWiggin was taken as a handle on the BBS chat/MUDD I used to frequent...and now my fingers automatically type it out without me having to think about it.
These days, I typically modify part of my last name to create internet names. "Benck" is the latest incarnation, which is just the first 5 letters of my overly long German surname.
For one, it allows my friends to easily identify me. Two, I'm guaranteed not to get sick of it. Three, it feels accurate.
I was using Hewn for quite awhile, which was a spell in the Sega Genesis era Phantasy Star games, but I've shifted everything lately to piecing together a piece of my surname into my characters, tags, etc.
"Djiem" is basically what J-M sounds like (J-M being the initials of my first name) if you pronounce the J with french phonetics (and not your english Jay).
In all seriousness, the classiest Live name I've ever seen belongs to a friend of mine; "Mori Harisu." The name is literally the Japanese word for his first name (at least, the noun upon which it is based, forest), and the Japanese pronunciation of his last name.
Now, you may not be into Japanese specifically, or, for that matter, any other language. Just consider something classy that you can stick with for a long time whenever you consider a semi-permanent handle -- I know Mori's Live-name was all the better when he was schooling folks named "xX420AVENGERXx" and the ilk.

IWinSwordfights - If anyone mentions a "Swordfight" I can't help but think of two men "going at it", thanks to my dad.
So, my best advice is to think of something that holds humor to you, but is relateably strange for everyone else. :"D
Yup, my GamerTag is the same as my Penny Arcade name, feel free to add me.
I hate my username, but I can't think of anything I'd rather have.
Something like that.

Example: Adrian Damski becomes Adamski
It rarely works, but is usually great when it does.
My cousin's name is Daryl, and his aunt used to call him Dare-Dare when he was a kid
So that turned into Double Dare, and then Dare^2. Nobody understands it, of course.
If, for example, your name is Terry, call yourself "Terryfying Apparition" or something.

I just checked on Xbox.com and it isn't taken.
