My uncle had an old school Dalek book from the original Dr Who series that I looked at a few times as a kid, and I remember them having hover platforms and such.

Yeah they did in the Peter Cushing movies. They stopped needing them when they just made the Daleks able to hover and float up stairs during the 7th Doctor period.

As far as I can remember, the hover platform was just a disk with some type of railing to keep the Dalek from sliding off. Should be easy to make.

This is all assuming I can easily make a 40k scale Dalek. I have some of the old Dalek minatures made by another wargame company I can't remember at the moment. They are a bit small compared to 40k stuff, but should work for a base.

    Interesting.
Like what was said before, that's essentially the codex in a nutshell.

Half the units are ridiculously good at what they do.

The other half are either prohibitively expensive or outright useless.

I think a lot of the complaining is that, more then most armies Necrons are are not balanced versus each other army, against some opponents they are much more effective against others. Marines seem to have an easier time against them then say Eldar.

Yeah, and from my experience, terminator (or terminator-like) armies tend to do extremely well against Necrons, since they have only a single gun with low AP that has an appreciable range.

EDIT: What the fuck is a Dalek?

    new-series-dalek-dvd.gif

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalek
A Dalek (pronunciation (help·info) "dah-leck", IPA: /ˈdɑːlək/) is a member of a fictional extraterrestrial race of mutants from the British science fiction television series Doctor Who. Daleks are organisms from the planet Skaro, integrated within a tank-like mechanical casing. The resulting creatures are a powerful race bent on universal conquest and domination, utterly without pity, compassion or remorse (as all of their emotions were removed except hate).[1] They are also, collectively, the greatest alien adversaries of the Time Lord known as the Doctor. Their most famous catchphrase is "EX-TER-MI-NATE!", with each syllable individually screeched in a frantic electronic voice (play sample (help·info)).

The Daleks were created by writer Terry Nation and designed by BBC designer Raymond Cusick. They were introduced in December 1963 in the second Doctor Who serial.[2] They became an immediate hit with viewers, featuring in many subsequent serials and two 1960s motion pictures. They have become synonymous with Doctor Who, and their behaviour and catchphrases are part of British popular culture. "Hiding behind the sofa whenever the Daleks appear" has even been cited as an essential element of British cultural identity.[3]

Do Daemonhunters/Grey Knights seem poorly executed to anyone else, or is it just me?

Because I played a game as Grey Knights today, and they really weren't terribly fun to play. I mean, they never really did anything interesting. Granted, it may have something to do with my army composition, but if so, I think it really serves to emphasize the problem.

For example, the defining point of Necrons is that they're tough, and get back up after dying. Dark Eldar are speedy and they screw with your Ld. Tau have superior weaponry. IG have tons of tanks/infantry/both. Orks... well, they're Orks. They all have a clear theme to the way the army plays. Daemonhunters... are good against Daemons. Quite good. The thing is, they're pretty terrible against anything else. And being good against Daemons isn't a theme. It's a feature of the army, but it doesn't factor in to the way you play the army. They feel like they're expensive Space Marines. They have some bonuses, sure, but it just feels the same.

Am I the only one who feels like this?

Daemonhunters is such a terrible codex. :(

It is pretty bad. I can't argue this.

The best thing you can do with the Daemonhunter codex is make a pure GK force out of it, unless you have stuff to ally them with. They really wanted to make the Daemonhunters like the 'super omgz awesome' units with prohibitive costs and all. They nailed the cost part, I think, but not the rest; I always picture them as the Imperium's thousand sons. I would much rather they lost The Shrouding entirely in favor of an invulnerable save (faith!), since The Shrouding is mostly pulled out of nowhere and relies heavily on luck and positioning.

    The Aegis is good, though.

Really, while Grey Knights are good at both shooting and assault, they're outclassed by specialists in both areas that are cheaper. It makes the army a bitch and a half to play against armies geared towards one extreme or the other.

I may have to crack out my old daemonhunters army to see how it does under 5th ed rules. I used to play with a pretty rough bunch of players and usually held my own in 4th (the exception being the nasty drop pod army that popped up around the time of the new SM codex).

Let me see if I can remember what my list used:
1 Grey Knight Grand Master w/Psycannon, Incense
1x3 Grey Knight Terminator Retinue w/1 Psycannon

1 Elite Inquisitor w/Terminator Armor, Tarot, Psycannon

    1 Callidus assassin

1x4 Grey Knight Terminator Squad w/2 Psycannons (one is on the brother captain)

    2x5 Stormtroopers w/2 meltaguns

2x Rhinos with extra armor, smoke

2xArmored fist squad w/Lascannon, plasma gun

    2xChimera with multilaser/heavy bolter

    1xLeman Russ w/triple heavy bolter

1xGrey Knight Dread w/Lascannon, missile launcher, extra armor.

At least, IIRC that was how the list went. It absolutely murdered eldar, dark eldar, and ork lists. Marines and Necrons I had to get a little creative with.

Secondly, BoLS has recieved word that the Black Reach Box WILL contain a full mini-rulebook, similar to the Battle for Macragge set. That means a full set of rules (as opposed to a cut down version that would only allow use of the included minis) in a black and white format that matches the rules section of the hardcover release. It does not contain any of the the lavish full color army background, hobby, and campaign sections.

I quite enjoy them! Also, I never really have too hard a time playing against my friends with them. I mean, it's tactically difficult, yes, but it's almost always evenly matched and very enjoyable, in my opinion. I like them because of their fluff, mostly, but also because they get things like Psycannons, Inquisitors, and the general feel of them. (which, now that I think about it, is pretty much just fluff all over again)

So what I'm getting at is, I really like their fluff.

The same stupid rumor dogged Macragge even after it came out because morons with tiny brains were utterly confounded by the fact that it came with a condensed rulebook, as well as a Macragge Scenario book.

The Black Reach mini rulebook will be the exact same format as Macragge. I believe there's already a leaked pdf of it out there.
