This thread is obviously directed at me. I haven't read any replies but as I know I haven't posted in this thread yet, I must assume they are all off-topic.

As for my suggestions, I have two depending on whether or not you want to play a PC RPG or a console RPG:

    PC: Planescape: Torment
Console: Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (vol. 1 at least).

SMT: Digital Devil Saga is a PlayStation 2 game. Planescape: Torment is probably still highly available in some kind of 8-10 dollar jewel case form. SMT: Digital Devil Saga, a PlayStation 2 game, will be a little harder to find.

No need to thank me. You are quite welcome.

    Shining Force 1 or 2

You can get a remake of 1 for the GBA which is amazing.

But yeh, the original versions on the Mega Drive were my first exposure to the genre when I was younger.

    They're amazing.

And you can save whenever you want.

Hold on, you can get Shining force for DS?!!?

    I wish.

But you can get the remake of 1 for the GBA, which you can play on your ds.

    Which I do.

    All the time.

    Correct!

Now that I have done so, I shall make an appropriate suggestion.

Honestly, I feel like Nintendo and company have rather dropped the ball on RPGs for the DS. I'm not sure I can make a suggestion as to which is "best" so I'll just have to defer to less awesome people on this particular issue.

Front Mission, a tactical mech rpg. Pretty sure it fits all of your criteria. The only downsides are the dated graphics and the stupid decision to put the newest parts at the bottom of the list in the shops, meaning you have to scroll past all the now useless gear to get to the good stuff when upgrading your mechs.

Front Mission is a great series.

Now that I've said that, I realize I'm a hypocrite since I own the PS2 version that came out years ago, and I haven't even opened it, let alone played it.

I would say start off with something that's simple and just fun. Mario and Luigi RPG games are awesome. Very humerous and the combat isn't really bad either. It's not in depth a whole lot, but you will defenitely enjoy playing it. The story isn't epic or anything, but it's good. If compared to movies, it would have a story that's something like Ice Age or Toy Story. Something that all ages can enjoy and gets your interest. Whereas a game like the Final Fantasys are like The Godfather. Moves slow at times, heavy in character development, and tons of plot twists.

Also, can't go wrong with the Pokemon games. If you've never played one, do yourself a favor and get one. They aren't kid games by any means. It just appeals to kids more than adults because they are "cute" but it can be played causually or very hardcore.

    Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest.

It's easy and short. Plus, if you want to ever play another RPG again after that, you'll know that it's a genre you must really like.

Pokemon, easy and accessible. The random battles arent as annoying as most JRPGs either because you actually have some kind of incentive to capture it, sometimes.

Wow, so many people fail at reading in this thread.

Anyways, Puzzle Quest. A million times Puzzle Quest. It's a brilliant game and a great introduction into RPG mechanics and you can play it a battle or two per sitting easily. DO IT.

Also, I'd agree with those who suggested the Mario & Luigi RPGs. Those are great as well.

Agreed. For a system that has been out for over 3 years and is dominating Japan like no other system to date, I'm shocked at how few quality JRPGs there have been for the system. Things seem to be changing though: The World Ends with You and Rondo of Swords both look like awesome, Square-Enix has some high quality remakes of classic games coming up later this year (FFIV & DQIV), and the Sonic RPG looks like it has the potential to be incredible.

I am one of the few people not wild about any of the M&L RPGs. My brain just doesn't work right and I found dealing with the two (or worse, 4) characters at once as fumbly and irritating as all fuck-out. If your brain adapts well to goofy control schemes then go for it. Everyone is quick to go OLOLOL HILARIOUS but I found them more eye-rolling than funny or cute. Liked the writing better in recent Paper Marios.

The combat is good. I would actually love a game in this style where you only controlled one fucking character on the overworld. It's actiony-turn based though... gotta have damned good timing, etc.

I really hate to say it but yeah, sigh, Pokémon. It rules. It will ruin your life. I had never tried it pre-DS. Because it was pokemon, and really who wants to admit to playing pokemon. I had to stop. The plot is bullshit. sure. It can be deceptively and even optionally deep, which is a plus and a minus depending on how you're feeling.

Otherwise I'm wild about Etrian Odyssey but it will destroy you.

Also, yeah yeah maybe not an RPG in the traditional sense but Rocket Slime is a fucking blast, a little Zelda-y. I highly highly highly recommend it.

Get Rondo of Swords. It has some of the best turn based combat in any game I've played, and the story and characters are fun without being overbearing. It also has a quicksave system and the stylus controls make it easy to play on the go. It is a difficult game, but not in a brutal unforgiving way like Etrian Odyssey or Shiren the Wanderer. Check out the Rondo of Swords thread for more info about the amazing combat system (really, it is that damn good) and the game in general.

I appreciate these games because they're pretty good, and the timing-based minigame battles are fun, but I can't say I enjoyed myself the whole way through. It just got... boring. The stories were so lame, I found it pretty tough to care about anything going on. Partners in Time is one of the few games I've ever sold. I mean, I beat it first but yeah, sold. Super Paper Mario will be my first title on Goozex. I don't know, they just don't do it for me.

I haven't played a Pokémon game since Red/Blue. They were a lot of fun but I've avoided all the new ones. Not sure why.

Honestly, I'd say start with Chrono Trigger. Great game. Or my original almost joking suggestion, Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest.

I don't like menu based RPGs much, but I had a Pokemon game back in college and it was pretty damn good (I'm also a fan of the cartoon, though I don't watch it much).

Now Pokemon is a little too deep for me, though I am always tempted to pick up a used one when I go to Gamestop.

Puzzle Quest is a great one too. I have it on the 360.

As for the OP, good choices, although I'd have waited for the re-remake of FFIV. The GBA version is fine, however.

Yeah, isn't it coming out soon, like, june or something.

No, wait. FFTA2 is coming June, FFIV remake July 22nd. DQIV prob August. Talk about saturation. FF:CC DS and that TWEWY thing just hit, too. Never mind Crisis Core, etc.

Holy crap this summer on the DS it's like:
    Drone Tactics
    new Summon Night
    new Harvest Moon
    EO2
    FFTA2
    FFIV
    Izuna 2
    DQIV

!!!! At least four of those are must haves for me.

edit: and who knows what'll be announced. And yes, the DQIV date is rumor/speculation so don't go fuckin quoting me. But it makes sense.

edit edit: I think I also see another pair of those Mega Man rpgs

Okay, so I want to get myself an RPG for the DS, but have no idea which one to go for. I've never played RPGs before apart from messing around on the odd demo, but I want something I can sink the occasional hour into to get a break from uni work. I really have no knowledge of this genre apart from there's this thing called Final Fantasy and supposedly it's pretty good...

Stuff I like the sound of:

Pick up and play - I'll never be playing it for more than an hour at a time, so something I can jump in and out of with a good save system would be great.
Depth - something that has lots to discover but isn't too daunting for an RPG virgin
    Good storyline.
    Something tactical and turn-based.

Okay, that's all pretty specific I know, but its just a general idea of what I'm after. The only thing I really want is a good introduction to the genre that won't put me off completely, as it seems like a bit of a minefiled. Help me out, good people at Penny Arcade.

I've been looking for something similar (also for the DS). I haven't found much. It depends on what you're willing to flex on.

Have been told to get, haven't played: Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (for GameBoy Advance but plays on a DS as well).

Have gotten, haven't played yet: Puzzle Quest

Planning to get: Fire Emblem (if you've played Advance Wars on the DS or GameBoy, it's pretty much that, but with knights and witches instead of tanks and artillery. I have no idea whether you can explore, or if that's important to you.)

I'm currently playing Advance Wars, which gets me my turn-based whack-stuff fix, and has a better story than most I've seen in an average strategy game. It is turn-based strategy, not turn-based RPG, though.

    Hope that helps. Good luck!

Oh, and duh (since I work at BioWare): The Sonic RPG for the DS is coming out sometime this year. I haven't seen the combat, but I know that the core concept is "My first RPG", something that kids can comfortably get into, but which won't tick off adults with lameness.
