Can somebody awesome recommend me my first RPG?

Okay, so I want to get myself an RPG for the DS, but have no idea which one to go for. I've never played RPGs before apart from messing around on the odd demo, but I want something I can sink the occasional hour into to get a break from uni work. I really have no knowledge of this genre apart from there's this thing called Final Fantasy and supposedly it's pretty good...

Stuff I like the sound of:

Pick up and play - I'll never be playing it for more than an hour at a time, so something I can jump in and out of with a good save system would be great.
Depth - something that has lots to discover but isn't too daunting for an RPG virgin
Good storyline.
Something tactical and turn-based.

Okay, that's all pretty specific I know, but its just a general idea of what I'm after. The only thing I really want is a good introduction to the genre that won't put me off completely, as it seems like a bit of a minefiled. Help me out, good people at Penny Arcade.

Final Fantasy 6 is really good but it does have a few segments that have at least an hour between save points. It's a GBA game but whatever it works in a DS.

    Quicksave FTW!

However, Final Fantasy 4 Advance is probably a much better introduction to the genre. There's a lot less to worry about since the game is decidedly linear, there's no "choose your party" until the very end, the game selects it for you. There's not a whole ton of customization to do, your characters progress in a predictable fashion, and they all have fixed abilities. It's not especially difficult, but it still makes you strategize quite a bit in a number of the boss fights. It has a great plot with at least three moments guaranteed to make you cry, and even more guaranteed to make you laugh.
    STONE!

In short, start with FF4, then move on to something else.

I'll second Pokemon. I haven't played the DS versions, but FireRed/LeafGreen on the GBA are good choices for someone's first RPG. There's also a fair amount of depth and strategy to it. Plus you can save anywhere as long as you aren't in a battle, so it's an excellent pick up and play game.

Oh, and I think they should be $20 by now.

You can get a remake of 1 for the GBA which is amazing.

But yeh, the original versions on the Mega Drive were my first exposure to the genre when I was younger.

    They're amazing.

And you can save whenever you want.

If you can live without the turn-based part, Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime and The World Ends With You are easily the best RPGs on the system at present.
Rocket Slime has the added bonus of being fairly easy, though it doesn't have the plot-centric structure most of the genre does.

    Ignore Xeno.

Says someone who recommends a game that's hardly an RPG at all!

What's next? Madden is an RPG because you play the role of an American Football player? :P

    Fine then. Easy. RPG. DS.

Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time.
    Pokemon Diamond.

    Or on the GBA

Pokemon Emerald, Fire Red, Leaf Green, Ruby, Sapphire.

Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls (especially good for a first game!) FF IV Advance, FF V Advance, FF VI Advance.

    Golden Sun.

and finally the gold star mac daddy of them all, a game that combines awesomeness with ease of learning.

    Mario and Luigi:Superstar Saga.

Also has the added benefit of being one of the ten funniest games of all time.

Almost all games called RPGs are not RPGs, if we're going to be that pedantic.
Assuming the OP wanted games with an experience mechanism, stats you had to build, and so forth, Rocket Slime fits.

I think it sends a mixed message on what most people think of the genre.

I actually believe that everygame is a role playing game. They just used that to mean "Pen and Paper Dungeon Crawl ala Dungeons and Dragons" because PaPDCaDaD doesn't quite roll off the tongue.

I've dumped 60+ hours into Pokemon in the past few weeks, but I don't know how someone can recommend it as a good starter RPG when the person requests a story.

Pokemon is basically devoid of story. "Sup kid, go look at as many of these pokemon as you can. Get back to me. Later!" To me Pokemon has played like a single player MMO (timesinks and grinding galore) with the promise of playing against people when you're done.

I only recently got my DS so I can't say much about RPGs on it, but if you can find FFVI or FFIV for the GBA they're both great RPGs to jump into. (Though IV is coming out for the DS soon I believe.) FFIII is out on the DS and it's decent but it may be a bit daunting for a first timer with the job system and moderate difficulty.

    Chrono Trigger

I am not particularly a fan of RPGs and I loved those three games. They're easy to get into and great fun, with the first two having good stories and characters and the third just havin' that lovely pokécharm.

    Mario and Luigi:Superstar Saga x 1000

Seriously, this is one of the best rpg's I've ever played. The battles are involving, the humor is amazing and the boss battles are epic. Get this and you won't be disappointed, I guarantee it.

    End of Game spoilerz!
I still remember the final boss and how hard he was to time the dodges. At one point mario gets knocked out and luigi screams out "mario no!" and goes and puts him on his shoulders followed by a few amazing dodges and finishing the boss off. So fucking epic.

I'm gonna go play this again right now.

I'd construct a situation such that everyone died at the exact same moment so that we could attack whatever afterlife there happens to be en masse and so take it over and create a perfect unending afterlife existence. Also, everyone who wanted one would have an afterlife pony.

I'd say FFIV. It was my first foray into the rpg genre back in the good old snes days, and it still holds up well today.

I'd also advise getting This. It's a very hard ps2 game and worst case scenario if you decide rpgs arn't for you wait a few years for the ebay market to bubble again and profit.

Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls for the GBA, definitely. It has both Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II on the same cartridge. Both games have updated graphics and have been slightly rebalanced from the original versions, so they're very playable (if a little easy...). Two very fun games in their own right, but they'll also give you a lot of context for any future RPGs you might play. I don't think you can really get console RPGs unless you've played the original Final Fantasy.

I'd go with a Pokemon, they are very accessible. I'd keep away from The World Ends With You for now (not for too long mind you) because I find it to be quite a heavy RPG with lots of story and the combat on 2 screens is a bit extreme. It's bloody brilliant though, don't get me wrong, just not sure how good it would be as a starting RPG.

maybe its taboo or something on this board but I just picked up Rondo of Swords and have been enjoying it thoroughly. It's made by Atlus, so you know it's good and will be impossible to find in a few months.

No mission has taken me longer than 30 minutes so far and it's fairly forgiving with the missions. It lets you keep experience if you save and quit or retry mid-mission, so even if you took a half hour only to realize you can't possibly win the mission you won't be out the time.

My only problem with the game is that (as a fellow SRPG newbie) many of the features of the game are not self explanatory, and the tutorials are a joke.

Personally, I would go with Final Fantasy IV Advanced, but the remake is coming. So maybe Final Fantasy VI Advanced would be a better choice, and just hold off on IV for a little while. Avoid III.

Pokemon Diamond or Pearl is also a good choice, but I don't love it nearly as much as most people here do. Red is still my preferred version of pokemon when it comes to the singleplayer portion.
