I really hate this game, but out of my entire Squeenix collection, I've beaten this three times now, and currently working on my fourth.
Why?
Why must I hate this game so, but yet play it? Am I looking for something? Is there some kind of light buried under the shitty magic system and piss-poor character development? Could it be I'm searching for a ray of hope in probably the worst plot I've ever come across.
I have to play. I somehow feel compelled to play.
It's just... It's just that it could of been so good! If it just would of used normal magic points... Maybe if Squall was a little bit more charismatic. Maybe if Renoa would of been a little more goofy. If they would of just made it so I gave a damn
I do though.... but I don't.
I don't know. It's just so odd that I want to like this game so much, but I feel so empty when I play it. Does anyone have games like this? Games you play in spite of themselves?
When I played Maplestory obsessively for a month and a half, I wasn't really enjoying it. I became pretty braindead, and I just let my fingers take over...I'm glad I gave everything away and uninstalled that shit
Psshaw. It only takes like eight or nine hours of card playing and resetting (more on the resetting, less on the card playing) to spread Open and ONLY open to every region. Maybe that rule that gives you more of their cards when you win by a lot too, but spreading open and getting rid of everything else is a worthy accomplishment.
The twists were all lazy fucking bullshit. All the characters' motivations were unbelievable and made no sense. And you don't know a thing about the true villain until the very end. And you never even know her motivation unless you go out of your way to use the Scan spell and read her bio.
It's poor story-telling, from beginning to end.
And the mechanics blew. Monsters and bosses increasing in levels with your characters made for maddeningly difficult boss fights. The game actually punished you for leveling instead of using the tedious draw system.
There was only one bright point to the whole game:
I've had FF8 for years. I can't actually remember when I got it, but I've never beaten it.
So pretty recently I started a new game, and I've been playing through it again. I'm on disc 3 now and I'm actually enjoying it a lot.
The story and writing are pretty awful.
WE ALL GREW UP IN THE SAME ORPHANAGE OMGWTF
"What's time compression?"
"Time compression."
"Oh, it makes perfect sense!"
But I actually like the characters this time around. Around disc 2, when you start getting Squall's internal dialogue, he stopped seeming like the obligatory annoying emo lead, and I guess I understood him this time around.
The writing is still awful and the draw system is broken, but I guess something about the characters is keeping me playing.

I loved the world of FF VIII. The Draw system was annoying occasionally, but I still think it's worth playing through occasionally.

I hate this game. I think it was one of the worst RPGs I've ever played with one of the stupidest stories of any game ever. I also hate all the characters.
In my current playthrough, every time I find a monster with new magic, I sit there for the next fifteen minutes drawing as much as I can hold with all three party members, and since I already drew 100 Curas with everybody, I don't have to worry about the damage they're dealing.
And then I auto junction to attack and continue becoming ridiculously powerful.
I hate wasting so much time drawing, but I'm obsessive about doing it, so I have a love-hate relationship with the draw system.
Can you imagine what it would of been like if Renoa would of been a little more odd? Like Sarah Silverman odd. Funny, but take-a-step back-from-her weird. It sure of hell would of explained what she saw in Squall.
Drop two more points in the charisma bucket for Squall. It's not that much of a leap from "whatever" to "ya know... fuck it!" (With a smile).
That would of made the whole relationship thing kind of fun, in a dysfunctional sort of way.
Oh Jesus, I just flashed on all the sequences with Laguna and his crew.
Those were just plain painful.
WHAT
Those were probably the best part. Laguna's limit break was just sooooo great.
The characters were obnoxious, the monsters Laguna and his dudes fought were obnoxious, the sequence in the Esther prison was agonizing, and the obvious ties between Winhill and Squall's past hit you over the head with so little subtlety that I had a headache afterwards.

I don't want to ruin anyones fond memories, but about 100% of JRPGs on the PS1 had bad stories.
FF8 was a good game, but not because of the story.

I know nobody likes it because there's no angst or motorcycles
but that's precisely why I did
I hate FFVII with a passion, and I never played VIII. IX is pretty much the only Final Fantasy that's still worth playing. And there's angst, Vivi just pulls it off really well.

I loved the junctioning system in FF8. Talk about being able to power up your characters.
Anyway, there are two games I was so desperate to love but didn't enjoy at all. Thief: The Dark Project (Yes, heresy, I know, shut up) and Pirates of the Burning Sea.
EDIT: FF IX was painfully bad. :P I've always hated the 'job' system because I feel limited. I like to set up characters as I want, not how the game says I should. Probably why I liked FFXII as much as I did.
Also, is it just me, or have all the female leads in FF games post FF7 been based on Tifa. I mean, Rinoa was more detailed, but the resemblance was there, but Princess Garnet looks like an out of roportion Rinoa and Yuna definitely looks like Rinoa.

Suikoden 3 was good, but only because it was on the PS2.

FUCK YOU RANDOM RULE
...okay, maybe you're necessary, because I just play the same high-power cards and win.
That minigame will forever make me love FFVIII.

As long as random didn't spread, that was awesome!

Before that i would wonder why they never used the gun on it.
I would play this again, but i only have the PC version, and i'm sure there will be a shitload of incompatibilities.

nine was the best.

If by Limit Break you mean his most excellent Battle Theme, then we agree.

Yea, fixed that... Spell check got me.
Could have turned to shit when Zidane's origin was revealed, but somehow they pulled it off.
There's a whole dungeon of angst near the end of FFIX.
He gets better though.
Anyways, this thread is about "hating" FF VIII. Go spread your FF IX "Love" somewhere else.
I love it so.
So.

Probably because other than explaining his connection to Kuja and adding his "sister" to the cast towards the end it didn't really affect much.

FFXII has spoiled me with its lack of random battle clap-trap
You clearly have horrible taste in RPGs if you though FF8 was a good game and Suikoden 1&2 were not.
Whoops, there I go.
