GTA IV Thread - IT'S OUT! **spoilers = tempban**
Posts
You mean software update.
That's the thing.. this goes back to the fact that, in GTA III, the radio wasn't really part of the story. There were tidbits in there, like when that one annoying chick who is supposedly your girlfriend calls up Lazlo to get relationship advice, but none of it would really hurt the game if you missed it.
I think none of us truly know the scope of how integrated the radio is into the overall game, but at the same time, when I look at all the stuff Rockstar has included in the game I've thought to myself and also heard other people say, "Wow, they've thought of everything!". Given this, it occurs to me that if it were easy to put custom soundtracks in without cutting off a major part of the game, they would have done it.
I would think if anything it is a software restriction with the player on the 360. I don't know how other games play custom music so I don't know if there is a way to have custom music play as a sort of background element. I am pretty sure Forza did this though.

Yep, mea culpa. Don't mix technojargon between gaming forums and your job. It'd be better if medical equipment doesn't get the red ring of death.
There shouldn't be any reason it wouldn't work. How do you think you can turn down XF but turn up voices or music in the settings for most games? I think your idea about putting the DJ between songs would be and will be the solution.

It is the kind of thing that is to be expected from Rockstar these days though. Especially considering the review ratings the game is getting.
In GTA IV you have the ability to 'tag' any song you hear on the radio, which then sends you a link on your Social Club account, allowing you to purchase that song and download it to your PC. How many songs would you purchase if you were only listening to your custom soundtrack, i.e. songs you already owned?
It could simply be a matter of deals Rockstar made in licensing the songs. Corporate greed ftl.
That way people who can't quite get in on the list can still (for 30 days at least) open that message, view profile, view friends, and send people invites.
Also on Metacritic, the 360 version is missing 14 possible points out of 18 reviews, so if all reviews weight the same it's missing only 14/18ths of a point. 99.333 in other words. By contrast the PS3 version is missing 6 points out of 14 reviews, so it's missing 6/14ths of a point. 99.571428 in other words. (Then again, Metacritic doesn't weight review sources all the same, so this analysis is flawed anyway.) So the difference between publications seems to be about a quarter point. That's awesome. :-)
Sadly I only own a 360, no PS3, so I'm not qualified to make any sorts of value judgments about the differences between the two. Neither is anyone else who doesn't own both. Even someone who owns one and their roommate owns the other doesn't have the necessary perspective to critique the two against each other fairly. This is one of the reason console flamewars are so unproductive. (So we should 'just say no.') X__X

Aye, that's the other (read: sensible) side of the argument. Time will tell, I guess. I think it'd be pretty damn cool if they did manage to make the radio a critical element of the gameplay.
Are they going to be releasing this game at midnight in canada also?
From my understanding on how the Xbox music software works, is that ALL games are required to have music as a separate track in the game, and your own tracklist will override that track so your music will be the background... I am not sure how this would affect GTA since the music only happens in the car (Though I do remember hearing that your phone has a built in radio). I personally don't really mind, I like the radio stations, something I thought was awesome in the first GTA game.
Out of the multiplayer modes, I think Cops and Crooks and the Mafia modes are the ones I am most excited for (Besides Free for All). Hangmans Noose seems cool, but it probably doesn't have a whole lot of replayability (compared to the others).
The things I want to know about the game that haven't been touched on by any of the reviews/impressions that have been published.
1. Is the camera phone usable in multiplayer? if it is can you send pictures to the other players?
2. For hand to hand combat, is there multiple styles you can learn?(Like San Andreas) or is it more like Bully where you learn additional combos?
3. Is there any mini-arcade-games? I know there are Darts, Pool, Skeet Shooting and Bowling... but is there simple, old school games like they had in San Andreas or in Bully? Would be awesome to have some gauntlet style game in a pizza parlor.
4. Can you ride the city bus or trains? (really hated that you couldn't ride the cable car in San Fierro)
5. Does the radio play EBS warnings if you get a high wanted rating?
6. There is a bank robbery in the game... can you rob banks afterwards yourself ? (or better yet, in Free for All?)
7. How good is the climbing mechanic? I know it can't be nearly as good as Assassins Creed (except for the minor hiccups) but is it better than Crackdown?
Can't wait to play to answer these if nobody else knows the answer

either way...PS3.....i'll add people to my friend list tonight, but if I could get on the PS3 list in this thread, the name is BeastZero
Those have mostly been touched on by several previews, actually. Camera phone not usable in multiplayer, since it's stupid to think you'd want to send pictures as opposed to shoot the fuck out of each other. No styles or combos, since Niko already knows how to kick ass at the start of the game due to military training. There's at least one huge arcade in the game, and it's been said that you can hang out with friends playing video games. Trains are in. Haven't heard about buses, but I can't think of a single reason you'd ride one instead of a cab, where you can tell them exactly where to go instead of following a specific route. No clue about the radio, but I doubt it, since that'd get in the way of your epic car chase music. I doubt bank robberies, since it'd be kinda easy to just do it over and over again and become filthy rich with little effort. And since you can't jump 20 feet straight in the air in GTA 4, I doubt it'll be better than Crackdown.
This. I mean, I know that eventually you're going to get tired of a station, but then you've got 8 or 9 other incredible stations to go to. But seriously, considering how much I loved listening to the radio in San Andreas, I don't think there are going to be any issues here.
I'll answer what I know, sorta know, or wildly just made up:
1. Is the camera phone usable in multiplayer? if it is can you send pictures to the other players?
No clue if you can send pics, but I'd suspect you could at least take pictures for your own amusement.
2. For hand to hand combat, is there multiple styles you can learn?(Like San Andreas) or is it more like Bully where you learn additional combos?
There really are no RPG aspects in terms of building your character's stats or anything like that, so no.. you have one basic brawling style and that's about it. (not 100% certain)
3. Is there any mini-arcade-games? I know there are Darts, Pool, Skeet Shooting and Bowling... but is there simple, old school games like they had in San Andreas or in Bully? Would be awesome to have some gauntlet style game in a pizza parlor.
I never saw anyone play them, but when I was watching some live feed videos of people playing GTA IV, I did see arcade cabinets in a couple of the shops.
4. Can you ride the city bus or trains? (really hated that you couldn't ride the cable car in San Fierro)
You can ride the train, but not the bus as far as I know. You can ride cabs which will take you to various locales, including the start of your last mission you just failed. One of the hilariously awesome things I saw someone do is jack a cab ride... they didn't steal the cab itself, but literally yanked the cab's passenger out in order to get themselves a cab ride.
5. Does the radio play EBS warnings if you get a high wanted rating?
I'm going to say I hope yes! ...but not sure. I know the radio talks about stuff you've done in the game, but so far it seems like this mostly relates to story missions and not random rampages.
6. There is a bank robbery in the game... can you rob banks afterwards yourself ? (or better yet, in Free for All?)
There might be bank robbery as part of a mission, but there aren't any random robberies as you could do in SA. Don't think there is a bank robbery mission in multi-player, but not sure.
7. How good is the climbing mechanic? I know it can't be nearly as good as Assassins Creed (except for the minor hiccups) but is it better than Crackdown?
It's decent from what I've seen... you can grab onto ladders and climb them, and when Niko jumps, he'll grab onto ledges, tops of fences, tall cars, or whatever else is right in front of you in order to pull himself up.
Hope that helps.
360/ps3 comparison for anyone who interested its ign insider.

Also, since they wanted to try to have both console versions equal they may have thought that it would have given an edge to the 360... though you can put MP3's on the PS3... GAH!!!! Too many thought processes...
Would have been a cool feature, but it isn't a big deal. Just pop some earbuds in, select a playlist on your ipod, turn off the ingame radio and Voila!!

How are you doing that?
Can you go to the gym and bulk up/neglect your body and become a lardass as you could in SA? How about tattoos?
Guess we'll learn that in a minute.
DOn't think so. You can however pull off different moves depending on what buttons you push/pulling on L-Analog (a headbutt for example while you are guarding).
Only one ive seen is QU3BED. Its like tetris; you move a a block consisting of two squares as it moves down a column. You can rotate it on its base - however "rotating" may "stand" the block up (in 3d) so that instead of "falling" sideways, it is rotating downward (like a slinky). Thats the best I can describe it, and yes it is kind of addicting and takes some time to get the "movements" mastered.
Train and subway yes. There are buses, and bustops (and the buses do stop) - haven't tried those out yet.
Only if you are in a cop car.
TBD
Perss Y to climb. And you slide down going down. Thats about it.
Buddy that works there. He's a manager in the electronics department, and he's going to bring me out a copy when he starts stocking.
They took out all the RPG aspects from San Andreas as far as I know. The only thing you can change about Niko are his clothes.
Damnit. I WORK at Walmart and they won't let me buy it early.
BITCHES AND FUCK!
So close now guys...sooo close.
Situation excellent. I am attacking.

You've been gamejack'd
ummm, the radio stations don't play songs in the same order every time so your one whole file theory is wrong already[/QUOTE]
Oh, didn't know that. They always played in the same order on the other games, so I just surmised.

They're not really doing anything special here, just starting pre-rings at 10.
