Nobody listens to techno

edited October 2008 in Debate and/or Discourse
I've been honkering for some new trance/techno/industrial whatthefuckever you want to call it, but I never know any of the DJ's names, so here we can have a database of these wonderful rave-inducing monkeys for everyone to share!

I've been listening to a DJ Isaac, Hardwell, Tiesto(Some stuff I like, some I don't), and Cosmic Gate lately, but my collection still lacks with the other stuff I have. If anyone wants me to change this OP to include a list of all of the people/sub-genre's I will to the best of my extent.

Trance and rave music are pretty dead these days. Lots of techno has moved into a more melded rock/electronic sound. LCD soundsystem, Hot Chip and Daft Punk for example.

    Squarepusher is still your god

I don't like the emo/scene stuff they play at clubs, screw that.

I just like any style of it that's hard/heavy. I've always had Squarepusher thanks to my brother at a young age.

It's pretty much impossible to have a sensible conversation about electronic music without narrowing the field at least somewhat.

Having said that, The Flashbulb is awesome, and so is The Polish Ambassador.

I always tell people to try Cosmic Gate, but it looks like you are already there, you should looks at some of Nic Chagall's solo stuff (he's 1/2 of CG, try Monday Bar and his remix of Virtual Discotec)

While it's actually electro not trance, you should check out Justice (start with Phantom pt.2), and Crystal Castles (start with Untrust Us)

DJ Dean is good but really cheasy... one of the lines is actually: "If the bass is too hard, you are too weak."

Emo? Scene? None of those I named are close to either. Hot Chip and LCD definitely take a few stylistic choices from pop rock but it's hardly emo.

Want harder stuff? Try some Vitalic, Amon Tobin or Aphex Twin

As far as tiesto goes, his live stuff is whats really good.

I'm not really into techno anymore, I'm seeing teisto this summer (for the second time) but I don't know any current new big names, since I was obsessed with techno 5-6 years ago. That said, the top DJs in trance actually havnt changed like at all, since if youre a good fucking dj, youre a good fucking dj.

So I'd reccomend Paul Van Dyk and Ferry Corsten in addition to live tiesto. oh, and Johan Gielen - specifically one set, In Trance We Trust vol 4. So awesome.

and for house, which I think is super gay 90% of the time, I always thought Judge Jules was fucking awesome.

My current four favorite legitimately "techno" albums:

The Field - From here we go sublime
    Justice - Cross
    Daft Punk - Alive
    juno reactor - labyrinth

I also would like to echo the sentiment that a lot of the best "techno" is turning into hybrid electronic rock sound. I am thrilled with the movement.

    Wave (Taucher Mix) - Sosa
    Loniness - Tomcraft
Who's the Starter - Ernesto vs. Bastian
Dark Side of the Moon - Ernesto vs. Bastian

This seems like a good thread to ask this question.

5 or so years ago I saw this techno video where some kind of puppet/muppet was sitting at a desk and kept gyrating or shaking his head everytime this certain part of the song went 'whup-whup-whup-whup-whup-whup-whup', with the 'whup' part increasing in speed as the part went on.

Anyone have any idea what song that was or who it was by?

The only tiesto song I have liked is sweet misery. Its kinda the same style as dark side of the moon by Ernesto vs. Bastian.

And this one in my playlist right now, and its pretty chill. I don't know how I even got it though.
Dj Tiesto - In Search Of Sunrise 4 - 104 - Jasefos Ft. Claire Van Der Boom - Do What U Want (Max Graham) .mp3

And lastly, I can't stand justice. Maybe one or two songs, but christ it gets annoying after awhile.

Not really; with good techno the difference from one loop to the next might be subtle, but I know subtletly has never been your strong suit, Hax. ;)

This is what my iPod looks like right now (in terms of techno, anyway - I'm guessing you don't care about the Wu-Tang and Aesop Rock)...

Black Sun Empire - Cruel and Unusual
    BT - ESCM
    BT - Ima
BT - Movement in Still Life
    Crystal Method - Vegas
    Daft Punk - Discovery
DJ Hype - Live at Meditation
    DJ Q-Bert - Wave Twisters
    DJ Shadow - Endtroducing...
    Freestylers - Painkiller
Hooverphonic - Blue Wonder Power Milk
Hooverphonic - A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular
    Hybrid - I Choose Noise
Hybrid - Remix & Additional Production
    Hybrid - Wide Angle
    Innerpartysystem - The Download EP
Linkin Park - Reanimation (what? if you listen to it as electronica rather than rock it's actually a fairly decent album)
    Orbital - Altogether
    Orbital - Blue Album
    Orbital - Diversion
    Orbital - In Sides
    Orbital - Middle of Nowhere
    Pendulum - Granite
Pendulum - Hold Your Colour (oh god so good orgasming right now aaaaaaugh aah)
    Rez - Original Soundtrack
    Sasha & Digweed - Northern Exposure 2
Underworld - everything they've ever released. (literally, this is like half of my iPod's storage right here.)

I really need to switch it up a little, though. I need me some Aphex Twin and some Front Line Assembly.

Actually I have one track, "Everything you touch" on there. I just didn't list it because I don't have the full release.

I have a lot of random one-off tracks too, like that MSTRKRFT remix of that Justice song.

    Justice? Meh. MSTRKRFT? Good stuff.

I'm a fan of Paul Oakenfold, BT, ATB, Tiesto, and a few others. Basically I just went to pandora.com and input a song that I liked and let it pick others to play. I'd give them the thumbs up/down and fine-tune what would come on that way. If I ever noticed that I had thumbs-upped more than one song from a given album/artist, I'd write down the artist and album title to pick up for whenever I found myself at a music store next.

Listing a track list is kind of useless. It would help if you said why you liked those songs and what kind of style they are. Like I won't listen to anything unless it has female vocals in it and I sure as hell don't want to try and for samples of all those songs to listen to just to hate them all.

There are a few male vocals I can get into. But looking through my play list, 95% of them are female.

Its weird, I know. But for some reason guys voices bore the shit out of me. The only male singer I have listened to recently is Mika, but thats not exactly straying too far.
