Q&A with Donny Clay -- Producer

DBZ has a very loyal and hardcore fan audience. How does DBZ stay true to the cartoon series that spawned this game?

We’ve always done a very careful (and good) job of making sure that our storylines, characters, challenges, etc followed what had happened along the DBZ series. Additionally, as far as gameplay mechanics, we have always paid very careful attention as to how each character moves, and that the graphics on the games matched as closely as possible to the cartoon series.

Does the game have a single player storyline, and if so, how does this integrate into the cartoon series timeline?

It does have a single player, but we’re keeping that under wraps at the moment – we will be revealing that information in a couple of weeks.

For rest of Q&A click here

I searched and didn't see a thread about this, (I thought I had but maybe that was at neogaf ... regardless delete if this is old)

I'm gonna be reviewing this game in a few days.

But a sneak peak wouldn't hurt.

Download it. Graphics are really impressive.
The gameplay is meh. Pretty much like the budokai games. All the moves feel canned and somewhat slow.
Still, the graphics are really great.

I enjoyed Budokai Tenkaichi 2 for Wii for a while, but I felt it wasn't worth the $50 I paid for it.

So I'm definitely not dropping $60 for a game, especially if I can't execute specials with waggle.

Thats a shame. I didn't like the Budokai games, but I really enjoyed TB2 on the wii.

I'm 85% done downloading... from what you played, do all the characters have special moves which are activated the same way? Because I hated that about budokai - how every character felt the same, only with a different skin/animation set.

I think it's great. The fighting is based more on skill and reflex than knowing a special combo or whatever.

I've always liked the way budokai plays, and I was going to buy this anyways, but I'm definitely more excited now.

I just want Budokai Tenkaichi 4. That series is a lot of fun; I like being able to zip around all over the place. I'll definitely grab this demo, though. Too bad there are only five stages in the full version.

It feels pretty sloppy at first, but things start moving smoothly as you grasp the engine. There's no training mode, so it can be a turn off if you dislike trial and error. Still, there are some pretty entertaining and satisfying things in the engine. Pursuits are quite awesome.

The story mode that you play in the demo actually seems tailored to people who want to play for that reason, you get game mechanics like assists that correspond with Dragonball Z's events/battles storyline wise. I've never really been one for any Dragonball Z game, but this seems like another treat for fans of the series. Never played it competitively and there's no versus option here, so there's nothing for me to make an opinion on given that I don't have that kind of skill and insight that comes with that.

All in all, if you like story, this does a good job of implementing it without having to sit down and watch too many lengthly cutscenes. It's nice to be closer to that fantasy of "living/playing" the story.

Pretty much, with slight variations. Combo trees seems to be basically xxxxxy for both characters that are available.
Forgot to mention that the demo is just two fights from the story mode. No MP option. Still, the graphics really help convey the anime, and the little cutscenes that play before, during and after the fight are really good.

I have no idea whats going on, but it looks good and seems like it has depth.

Plus its pretty neat how it rewards you for doing things in the show, and how it interwinds cutscenes into the gameplay.

Mm, I kinda see where you're coming from Kyougu, since I played both Goku and Yamcha by mashing buttons with directions, but they have a lot more variation than they did in Budokai. Especially with regard to timing, and the types of moves they do are very different.

It was annoying in Budokai because everyone had the same damn beam move, just with a different animation. Yamcha's wolf fist and the spirit ball were pretty cool and something I hadn't seen in budokai.

I can't wait for my review copy to come in the mail so I can go all out on this.

they should have thrown in a tutorial mode, though, because really I don't know what I'm doing for most of the battle.

Also, any word on what this game will cover? The title screen has freeza and cell on it.

Up to the cell saga, which is somewhat annoying. But you know they have to milk it for more sequels.

But yeah that is quite annoying there only going to the cell saga.
I just hope that each character is unique and not copies of each other. I still enjoyed all the other DBZ games and will prob get this anyway. Damn work I want to play this now

Alright, I just beat both demo stages. That was pretty fun! Graphics are great. I do wish this was part of the Budokai Tenkaichi series, because I loved the scope, but this does have better, more focused combat. I also liked the proper cutscenes.

As long as most characters can blow up the stage, I'll be happy. As in, big boom, map changes to a crater, or for namek from normal to erupting volcanoes as the planet is splitting into pieces.

The demo no, the full game does, even some form of cooperative i believe.

I approached this demo as a serious non believer, i didn't expect to like it since i haven't watched the show in so very very long, and not many of the previous games impressed me much. But color me impressed, this could be a day one purchase for me depending on reviews. It looks and plays so damn well, and really captures the feel of the show. Earlier on i was pretty cynical about why the game only went as far into the sagas as it did, but if all the fights have gotten the attention the demo levels did, it makes sense.

Big thanks to this thread, for getting me interested in it.

Uhm, that's a good point that I hadn't thought about. The scenes in the fights were pretty impressive.

I played the demo more and enjoyed it. Only thing that's going to keep me from buying this right away is that it comes out when MGS4 does.
