Isn't the core goal behind every scheme like this simply tax-dodging? That's the only benefit you get from not living in an established country.

There may be an added bonus of getting away from the poor people and the colored people.

    Naw, they wouldn't discriminate them.

    Pod 6 is another story.

In all seriousness, if this does get off the ground (so to speak) - I'll be curious to see what happens if they decide to park in a shipping lane, or dump their crap where people fish. Because a libertarian floating city is almost by definition going to be a stinky, lowest-bidder-dominated pollution factory.

I like the idea but that's because this thread corresponds with me ranting in [chat] about how we need more underwater cities, which is what I'm hoping this is a prelude to. Of course I want administered, awesome underwater cities that solve world problems like overpopulation rather then libertopias.

I don't think that underwater cities will solve any overpopulation problem, unless those cities have a lower per-person ecological footprint than above-ground cities. And if we had the technology to make sustainable underwater cities, why don't we just make sustainable above-ground cities first?

We've got plenty of places to put people. We just don't have any way to give the people that live there first-world standards of living without raping the environment at the same time.

Everything I know about urban planning I learned from SimCity, but it doesn't seem beyond the realm of possibility that a city planned with modern technology from the ground up could be more efficient than a centuries-old ad hoc agglutination. Maybe not enough to be a very good idea, but still.

It's just beyond the realm of possibility that libertarians would build one.

Agreed. Moniker would have some words about this, too, but just planning a city with eco footprint in mind would be a huge advantage.

I'm curious to see where the science stands on this. Wiki has some articles on arcologies and self-contained cities.
The long-term design of Arcosanti has changed multiple times since work began. The eventual target population is somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000. The current population generally varies between 70 and 120, depending on the number of students and interns working at the time.

Somewhere in this site someone suggested trying to reach out to people in video games.

How about taking it one step further. How about designing a game that depicts the history of the formation of our country and shows what has actually happened to our sovereignty and rights. Then the intro could end in a natural disaster or "terrorist" attack that causes whomever is President when the game comes out to declare martial law.

The gameplay could be a shooter combined with a strategy game to help your family survive, stay out of concentration camps, hide your weapons, and stealthily attack federal agents and foreign armies that come to take over our country and enslave us into the social globalists that took over the world.

Of course we may have to make up a fictional country with fictional forefathers and history to keep the government from locking everyone up as terrorists. But if young kids or teenagers buy the game, it might be able to open their eyes as to what is going on in the world.

I can program, but I don't have the time or money to make a decent video game. I hate graphics too. Half Life 2 is open source and a lot of good mods have been made from it to save some of the trouble of making a new engine.

    WTF?!

I don't think libertarians would have to sink much investment into arming a militia to deal with pirates. I think they've already got a lot of the sorts of weapons that they'd need, and a lot of people itching for a rationalizable reason to use them.

So, I think a Libertarian would respond that everyone would be free to own their own guns. So, if you have a dedicated security force that decide to become the ruling class, the unruly mob is also armed and rebel.

What they fail to realise is that any security force would be trained to work as a team and would probably be able to quickly pacify any group of people who didn't have any experience fighting. Maybe if everyone is taught to work as a team? Of course, then that would be a social program and Libertarians are loathe to think about social programs.
