and the whole image is far to bright for yellow streaks of light to look that yellow. Darken them colours up or it'll look like he's going down a chute that is mysteriously lit with flourescant lighting.
Ummmmmmmmmmm
FUCK YES?!?!
Thaaat's a-mazing.

I would define speedpainting as creating a compelling, holistic image while working under a time constraint by exploiting composition, color, light, value and texture (and many more design elements) to the fullest and mostly or completely ignoring the fine rendering step that normally occupies the vast majority of the time spent working on the piece. It's about making it easier to practice picture making skills that you normally only get to flex once each time you make a piece by dropping the time investment involved in "finishing".
Due to digital speedpainting having strong roots in the production art industry, there is a lot of emphasis on economy and efficiency in making the most "complete" image you can with the least effort and time investment, since it is not only great practice but it is in and of itself a useful teachnique for creating a rough preview of a potential full-blown illustration. Ideally any speedpainting should be able to function as the foundation of a fully completed work of art and should only need time spent making minor tweaks and fleshing out the fidelity of the rendering.
I really don't mean to come off as a language nazi but I think it's important to make sure people know that speedpainting is not just a messy thing you did in photoshop or painter in 45 minutes.
thanks so much for taking the time to do that man, it really helped
here's what i've done to it
i might change it again but i'm pretty happy with this for now

You're going to consider composition last?
You might want to adjust your work methods in the future. Otherwise you'l just be trying to infuse life and meaning into something that started out without any, and as a result it will look forced and unnatural. not to mention you'll have to spend a lot of time fixing things you could have easily prevented with a little planning.
@Mykonos
have you tried starting with thumbnails? they help me to work out the composition before i start properly on a picture

stupid Tam is stupid
looking back, i wish i'd bought a lot more of them, they're great as a stop-gap sketchbook
Also, I gotta compliment the right ear (stage left) on that picture. It's still mighty loose and raw, but I think you've found an understanding of the perspective with the start you've got there.
road trippp!
thanks re: the right ear, although i do think now that it's a little low
i am proud of the portrait as a whole, though - looks like that six months of doing almost nothing but self-portraits paid off
basically the thing is not finished at all but i'm happy with the fundamentals
Mine's a beyond shit though, which is why I never posted it here in the first place. But considering happy coincidences I decided it was apt.
I think it's because I was drawing while I was lying down, at least I hope that's what it was.
Except for now that is.
Feeling almost done with this guy
The bird-feet look a bit robotic though, and the joints seem o be bent awkwardly in the bird foot that's out of the water.
The top of the hind legs and indeed the entire rear end appears flat... the feet look fantastic but once my eye reaches the top of the leg it feels like to orientation is moving to the griffins right.
Ahh I think I've got it, the light in the entire pic appears to be lit from the top left, but on the griffins arse looks like it's coming from the top right.
Also the fore bird arm closest to screen looks odd, almost as though it is wierdly long.
Apart from that though, it's fantastic! The emerald green you've used makes me very happy, but your colouring always makes me happy.
EDIT: Oh and the wings are unbelievably awesome.

Also fuck you for not telling me you were here.
