Debilitating events or fears: DAMN THAT ______!

Wasn't expecting to make another thread so quickly, but good old NBC reminded me of something horrible from the past and it makes for a nice topic about fears. The tv has been on providing some background noise as I work when out of nowhere...IT came on...

"This is a test of the emergency response system, THIS IS ONLY A TEST...RRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE..."

That damn thing always comes on at night, and not at regular daily or weekly intervals, it's always random and waiting in the wings like some carnivorous plant ninja! Because it's always at night when everything else is quiet it's absolutely paralyzing. If it's during the day, or with any other activity going on, no problem at all but they wait and strike at just the right moment.

Are there any fears that absolutely paralyze you and stop you cold? Are any of them strikingly odd or amusing?

Biting into a big juicy apple, and feeling something very amiss, a sort of crunch and crush as your jaw closes. Recoiling, you see that the apple was filled with thousands of tiny spiders and they are in your mouth and they are all laying eggs inside your throat.

You know when you see those horrible war atrocities in a movie and the people there have no guns so they can't do anything and their government or some warlord is just wandering around murdering people they love and no one ever stops them.

I'm terrified of having to be one of those people standing there, watching loved ones die.

I always try to think of something like throw a chair or sneak up on someone--something--but I know that in real life that just might not be realistic. I just might have to stand there and watch so I don't die too.

That scares me.

For the last year I work in the ICU, which can be very rewarding when you get to help someone who's critically ill get better. But it also involves situations where you have to stand there knowing that you have tried everything to help this person and its just not going to be enough.

Its a very powerless feeling and you end up coming to accept it because if you don't the job is going to burn you out.

Keith and I have been having a problem with bugs in our apartment.
Last night I woke up at like 4 am convinced I was covered in spiders and I screamed really loudly.

Being covered in spiders would not be rad.

Ain't afraid of that anymore.

He got it all the way around the room and a lot on the door.

Flips out in the community over seconds or some damn thing.

Gets brought to us. Figures he should get to go outside on the first day of his admission, unsupervised, he's told no.

Two injured staff and one concussed sweet old lady nurse later and he's in a sideroom.

DOesn't like being in said room. Starts smashing own mouth against window.

Hilarity ensues.

Gets told he can't be let out until he calms down and that he sent a nurse to the hospital.

Whines "It's NOT FAIR I SHOULD GET TO GO OUTSIDE."

We leave him in room for the weekend.

Well, the doctor replies, just look at what you did to the room.
