Target Stores: Xbox Live Arcade Points Deal

edited May 2008 in Games and Technology
Normally I don't bother of informing anyone about special game deals, since there's a well known and consistently available site for all us cheap ass gamers. But as this is a particularly sweet deal that was referred to me from a friend, I feel more inclined to tell you guys all about it.

Target has a running sale involving Xbox 360 point cards that will last until this Saturday (05/31). As far as I know, there are two types of card sales, one that my friend mentioned, and the one I witnessed for myself.

3200 Point Card: $29.99

1600 Point Card: $14.99

I only found the latter when I went today, but buying two will still equate to 3600 points for $29.99. Now here's where the deal sweetens.
couponbirthdaytoysgp7.gif

With this coupon, you'll be able to bump off $5 off the already low price. The coupon is only valid for purchases $25 or above, but that's irrelevant: Whether you use it on the 3200 point card, or for a purchase of two 1600 point cards, you'll be buying 3200 points worth of Xbox Live Arcade for only $25.

Now, if you want, you can try exploiting this a bit with the following coupon:
xbox10offfrontmg5.jpg
xbox10offbackvv9.jpg

(note: you should only need to print the barcode, but it's recommended you print a page with both pics to avoid confusion)

Now as the above coupon says, it's $10 off any 360 gaming software. However, if you wish to attempt it, you can use that coupon for one of the above point cards, hereby bumping off a whopping $10 off. If you meet any resistance from a cashier, like I did, you can argue that the term "gaming software" should apply to the points, since the only way to purchase Xbox Live Arcade games is to use those points. I was able to coax the assistant manager to ring it up, hereby netting me an extra 1600 points for only $5.

Again, your mileage, and morals, may vary, but it isn't really a lie that the point cards should count as "gaming software". Regardless, I succeeded in pulling it off, and as a result, I'll be enjoying the newest Penny Arcade game for just $5. :)

The $5 coupon however is certainly legit and Target should honor it no matter what. Remember, the deals on the cards expire this Saturday. In the meantime, I'll be mulling over how to spend my 4800 points. I'm thinking the following:

Penny Arcade: 1600
Puzzle Quest: 1200
N+: 800
Pac-Man: 800
Geometry Wars Retro: 400

Total: 4800

Feel free to discuss any worthy Arcade games I didn't list (keep in mind I already have Rez, Ikaruga, and TMNT).

Passing the savings on to youuuuuuu.

Alas, there's no way I can pull this off at my local Target. It's in Brooklyn NYC right by where the new basketball stadium is going, and lord bless it, it's so ghetto that in order to get Rock Band I had to win a switchblade duel.

Creative coupon arguments are beyond their ken.

Do you have a direct link to this coupon? I don't want to be printing up an illegitimate coupon. Yes, people forge coupons online. I've seen it done. I don't claim yours to be illegitmate, I just want to be certain that its ok to print up.

Sorry, that's all I got. I can confirm the $5 coupon will work, since it's an email exclusive coupon. The $10 should work too, if you want to use it for an actual game.

This is very, very YMMV—not only does it expressly say that only one coupon is good per transaction, but both also say "no copies." Still, if you find the right sales clerk you might be able to get them to work.

Regardless, coupons aside $15 for 1600 Points is still a better deal than you're going to find in a lot of spots, so I might get one even without a coupon.

I was actually considering buying a gaming card today. I'm trying to decide if I want 360 points, PS3 points, or VC points.

Morales, by the way, DOESN'T mean son of morals, as I always assumed it did.

If target was smart, they would of embedded a code into that barcode to detect duplicates. If they are stupid, then it will work out just fine. Usually there are asshats that try to print up free coupons and print them over and over. 5$ off of 25$ purchase isn't that bad.

I actually hadn't considered using this for Wii points. It's a good idea, but I already spent $60 buying the six WiiWare launch titles (but thankfully I received the check from my editor that paid back those $60. Reviewing games is awesome).

Yes, a lot of these coupon missions rest entirely on the cashier you get. I always make it a point to take the line with the most casual looking cashier, or someone who looks like he/she doesn't really give a crap and is not likely to read the fine print. In today's case, the cashier I went to attempt the $10 off 1600 points ploy actually fussed a bit.

"If I honor this coupon, he's getting that $15 card for $5, and I don't really want to be held accountable for that."

Fortunately the assistant manager was more lax, so he "made a one time exception".

Working in retail, that crosses over the "he could sell it for money back" or "return it for something else" Both of which I've seen and personally dealt with. I don't recommend the 10$ off 360 software since carts (at least for my workplace) fall under accessories.

The 5$ one seems decent enough though.

Well according to the guy who posted it in CAG:
I received a catalog/ad from Target in the mail today. It had a bunch of ads and coupons for kids stuff in it. I almost thru it out but then I saw a coupon for $10 off XBOX360 games. There is no price limit on the coupon so technically you could get a game for free. I can post a scan if people want it.

Yep. The $10 off coupon is a fraudulent photoshop. The original coupon was double sided.

Becuase of abuse (the coupon has been out for a while and people have gotten FREE games with it), Target had been cracking down on its use. Sometimes it requires an override to work.

Good luck to those who want to give it a try.

Yea, the guy in Electronics couldn't get it to go through*. I had to go to Guest Services to check out, where the coupon scanned fine. The lady there did ask me if the coupon was a photocopy, and said that sometimes those won't work.

*He also didn't think games counted as software.

Target carries the point cards that have to be scanned and activated like a prepaid phone card. They're not in the plastic package. My target had a ton.

They wouldn't accept the $10 coupon because the card isn't technically software. I didn't push it and used the $5 one and got 3200 points for $26.

Man, this shouldn't be dropping off the front page. If you have a 360 and are even remotely interested, you should be stocking up on points. Just using the $5 coupon means I'm picking up OTRSPOD for $12.50. Ikaruga is $6.25! How can you argue with that?

Besides, sales on MS points are pretty darn scarce. This is the best deal I've seen in a while for 'em. I'll probably grab at least 6 cards.

I'm highly enjoying all the Arcade games I purchased with the cards, but since the sale ends this Saturday, I'm wondering if I should purchase a few more points? I've pretty much gotten all the XBLA games I could want, but there's always DLC, like the CoD4 map-pack. If I were to do this again, it would have to be with the $5 off coupon again, since I'm certain there's no way I can pull off using the $10 coupon on the cards again, at least not in the same Target store.

So games count as toys? Could I use on this accessories? I wouldn't mind finally picking up the recharagable battery pack/charager kit that Microsoft makes.

I've got far too many point cards as it is and every some live subscription cards I need to sell off, but thanks for the heads up.

Too bad the $10 coupon is a fake, I saw The Simpsons game on clearance for around $12 the other day and I would have taken it home for $2.

Other than that I can't really think of any Xbox 360 games that jump out at me that I want.

Is it really confirmed a fake? The guy who posted it said it was a scan, and it did ring up with my cashier without her having to input the barcode manually.

Anyway, I don't see anything else worth purchasing in XBLA, and the only DLC I'm looking at is the CoD4 map, which will likely become free with time. I keep thinking I might regret not at least hoarding those points, in case some awesome XBLA game shows up within the next week or two.
