A few of us have decided to go to the
Omega Sektor in Birmingham, UK on Saturday 26th July.
This is your invite to join us. So far, the plan is to arrive in Birmingham city centre about 10:30 - 11:00 a.m., and then walk to
Omega Sektor. Its not far from New Street station.
If you become a
member, you get your first hour free, membership is free, too, and noobs like me get free lessons. It costs £5 for all day.
So far, my tentative plan is as follows:
1. Arrive at 11:00 a.m. at Omega Sektor, have a mooch around, see what's what and where it is.
2. Play the free 1 hour on whatever games you like.
3. Have lunch somewhere - probably not in Omega Sektor, but depending on prices.
4. Play for 3 further hours (whilst I go to Selfridges if I get tired of playing games!)( and maybe to Druckers Viennese Coffee House, mmm )
5. Find a pub.
6. Drink beer til its time to catch my train home with LewieP.
I'm going to contact Omega Sektor to see if they will offer us any deals if there are a big enough group going, so lpost in this thread if you'd like to come.
I'll keep adding to this as i get more info, and will post here who's coming.

Other than that, I am looking forwards to this.
It's £5 in. All day. Unlimited access, except Arcade Machines. On Saturday Nights Omega tends to have all-nighters, too, so if anybody is up for staying all night for some insane gaming/drinking there, you could go home Sunday morning.
I'll have to wrangle the day off work, but I'm happy to be a guide to Brum in general.

The plan seems pretty solid, in fact LewiePs Mummy has managed to organise more in one day then a group of people managed in 6 months, so congrats to you, Mummy. I'm definately up for it, travelling up from London I'm sure there will be some places (Travelodge, local hotels etc..) to stay at overnight.
One question; Is it definately set at July 26th now? because it has been switching for the last couple days or so.
But yeah, thanks for taking the time to sort it out LPs Mummy. Anything you need help with just ask.

If it gets big enough I'll even do a video of the event and possibly have some competitions or something, who knows. I am also travelling from the Big Smoke so anyone else also going from the capital let me know and we'll all go on the same train from Euston.
Tickets from Cardiff are far cheaper, but I won't be here by that time.
If I can think of a way to get to Birmingham that isn't going to cost me a ridiculous amount of money, then I'll definitely try and make it.
Kropotkin: That's fabulous!! I can feel Tshirts and a banner happening! (or at least badges)

Been to the Bullring before? The Selfridges there is pretty big. Good (if expensive) food on the ground floor too.
Mind you, I miss the old Bullring and the Rag market, but at least the original Druckers is still there - the Manchester one is rubbish.

Edit: OK, I'm probably going to do this. I've booked a bed for two nights in a hostel, on the 25th and 26th of July. The great thing is I only have to pay a deposit for now, which is just £3.60, so I can cancel easily enough if it doesn't work out.
The train is going to cost about £36, which is not fantastic but I can cover it.
Just because I like to research this kind of stuff, my train ticket will be to Birmingham Station, but is there any other station I should choose instead? I don't want to accidentally arrive on a station outside of Birmingham or something.
Edit 2: Am I to understand that New Street Station is the main station at Birmingham, and the one that trains are likely to arrive at? If so, that's awesome, because my hostel is close to both the station and Omega Sektor.
You could be hardqore and do an all-nighter.
Oh god. Don't get Qore puns banned, as well.

Yep that's the one. It's pretty much in the city centre. Although there's also Birmingham International station (which is where the NEC is), so it's best to double check that you're not heading for that station.
The website says 8am to 11pm Monday to Saturday, but that late-sessions are available. It doesn't really matter, because I've booked a hostel now for both nights, so I can sleep in a bed.
But is New Street Station the main station in Birmingham?
Edit: Already been answered, I see. Well, The Train Line just says "Birmingham Station", so I can't imagine they'd sent me to the international one. Once I have a lift to the station in Cornwall confirmed, I'll book the train tickets and LewieP's Mummy can add me to the list.
To be fair, even if you do somehow end up at Birmingham International there are trains going from there to Birmingham New Street around every 10-15 minutes, I think it's only around £1.50 for that one.
First off thanks for responding so positively to the idea of us British attendees meeting up prior to the big show. I really regard it as a kind of send off for us intrepid PAXonieers who are braving the rain soaked pricipice of Washington State Convention & Trade Center [sic] a month after the gathering.
As for the event itself I have a number of ideas of what we could do on the day. Here are some I had which could work out, some not:
1) A video and picture blog of the event showing those who failed to show up what they missed and who to look out for when we get to PAX 08.
2) Special edition of my podcast with a round table of some of the attendees to discuss PAX, past and future.
3) Have the DVDs of PAX 07 (which I have) playing in a room at Omega Sektor for people to view.
4) Video game related pub-quiz after the gaming at Omega Sektor
5) Tips on surving PAX especially what British food to take on a leaflet.
6) Small tournament with the games at Omega Sektor.
If there is anyone wishing to step up and organise items 4 & 6 that would be great. More news on the event as we get our s**t together. Best you can do now is sign up and join the fun. Remember this event is not solely for those going to PAX, anyone else is more than welcome to see us off in true PA style!
Also, I'll have the day before Friday in Birmingham from about 2pm onwards to do whatever, so if anyone happens to be arriving then, I can meet up with you.
THE ROYAL PAXONIEER CORPS: 32ND BATTALION
Before you ask no there is no special meaning to '32nd' other than it sounded good. The new official poster is shown below which is inspired by the ever so British film Zulu that starred Michael Caine and you can't get more British than him. Except possibly Stephen Fry.
Note any 32nd members that are participating in the West Coast Train Trip 2008 can request an honourable discharge in order for them to join the People's Republic of Arcadia armed forces.
I'm thinking about t-shirts with Kropotkin's wonderful logo on. I'll either cost out white Ts plus logo, or will just print out logos on tshirt printing paper and post them to whoever wants one for people to iron them on to their own tshirts. And yes, I know you have to reverse the image, I've done it before! (Live8)

Also, I've just bough mine and Lewie's train tickets, £11 return each from Manchester, but it was loads cheaper to buy singles each way - same train, but hey, saved £55 each!

Excellent work Mr P. I was worried that the event had fallen flat on its face, especially after I got swatted out of Rllmuk forums for alleged spamming *sigh*.
Anyway, glad to see we're gathering some more people, no doubt this will gather further interest closer to the time!
Hey, any excuse for a trip.

If only for your Ruger skills in Soldat. Or whichever weapon you happened to be particularly good at.
Edit: I just realised, that if they let you install whatever games you want, or if they can do it for you, we can totally play Soldat over LAN. Bitchin'.
I'll play portal, badly, and hide from the gun turret thingies, they scare me.
