Hellgate: London † Time to learn Korean?

devoirdevoir Registered User regular
edited November 2008 in Games and Technology
Hellgate: London is the first retail game from Flagship Studios, lead and made up of a number of ex-Blizzard North employees who were significantly responsible for the Diablo series of games.

It's a hack'n'slash'n'shoot, loot-based action RPG with both a singleplayer and multiplayer component in a similar vein to the Diablo series. HGL, however, is fully 3D and has a focus on ongoing online content which will hopefully lead to more depth than running Baal for the millionth time.

Following a rocky launch in October 2007, the game's turned a lot of its issues around in terms of wideranging bugfixes, balance changes, new features and new content.

Certain perks (such as shared stash, expanded stash) and new content (Stonehenge, the Abyss) are restricted to subscribers in multiplayer only.

Change your server selection to Test Centre. It'll patch over. If you want to run both normal and test without continually patching between the two versions, you need to make a copy of your HGL folder and run two separate clients.

Posted to the official forums tonight:

The Abyss Chronicles boasts a long list of new features and fixes and as such has required a long internal testing process. The studio is currently in a “bug squashing” stage with regards to the major content update meaning that development of Patch 2 is complete and we are now working on cleaning it up and making it pretty (and balanced). As part of the path of all our patches, the Abyss Chronicles will first be enjoying a good stay on our Test Center server where it can be poked and prodded and picked at by you, our thorough Hellgaters and brave test subjects.

The Abyss Chronicles is slated for Test Center launch this coming Monday, June 9th. The update will be applied via a standalone patch (1.3 gigabytes). We will have more information on this big move first thing next week.

    Underground Communique #7
    Week of June 2nd

    ---

But First, A Word From Our Sponsors

This seventh issue of the Hellgate: London Underground Communique is brought to you by the War Drive for a Better Tomorrow Through a Tougher Today. Your kind and generous donations to this most noble of funds have no only yielded this installment of the Underground Communique but also helped produce the second lesson of the SAFE Video Series, "Humans and Zombies". Even if you already can differentiate between the heroic survivors of humanity and the reanimated undead when out and about, be certain to fortify your knowledge by partaking of this educational video.

Also available in this Underground Communique are new patch notes for Patch 1.3c and 1.3d, an announcement on Test Center transfers, and an update about the Abyss Chronicles' progression from development to "bug stomping mode".

Hellgate: London Patch 1.3c Now Live

After a brief stay on the Test Center server, Patch 1.3c has launched. This interim patch fixes a number of German and Italian translation errors and introduces some new in-game messaging.

Patch notes for 1.3c can be found here.

Test Center Updated to Hellgate: London Patch 1.3d

Updated yesterday afternoon, the Test Center server is presently playing host to Patch 1.3d, the presumptive final iteration of the 1.3 line. This patch introduces a few significant adjustments to gameplay, character creation, and one vendor NPC in particular. Players can now create Elite Mode characters (and subscribers can create Hardcore Mode characters) if their account has a character that reaches level 20 or above. The update also fixes a PRD bug and a character options issue.

Patch notes for 1.3d can be found here.

    Test Center Transfer Complete

We received thousands of requests from players wishing to transfer their characters to the Test Center server in order to have up-to-date versions of their characters to participate in testing. The characters have finished copying from both the Shulgoth (US) and Sydonai (EU) servers and are now available on Test Center.

Players may find that some of their characters' equipment is missing. This occurred if the identical item was in the possession of another character on Test Center via trade, in-game mail, or shared stash. The item wasn't copied over in order to prevent item duplication. Players are encouraged to log into Test Center and determine which items are missing due to this before the server is updated to Patch 2, the Abyss Chronicles.

The Abyss Chronicles (Patch 2) Coming to Test Center on Monday

The Abyss Chronicles boasts a long list of new features and fixes and as such has required a long internal testing process. The studio is currently in a “bug squashing” stage with regards to the major content update meaning that development of Patch 2 is complete and we are now working on cleaning it up and making it pretty (and balanced). ATI Catalyst 8.5 Fixes Hellgate: London Display Issue

Released late last month, the latest version of ATI’s Catalyst driver suite has solved a flickering problem experienced by Windows Vista users. From their release notes for Catalyst 8.5, “flickering is no longer noticed when quitting and then relaunching [Hellgate: London] when the in-game settings are set to their maximum levels.” ATI users can find the latest update here. The full release notes are available here.

Hellgate: London Patch 1.3 Trailer Now Showing at a Website Near You

Informative, funny, and just a little bit macabre is certainly one way to describe Hellgate: London’s Patch 1.3 trailer entitled “The SAFE Video Series - Lesson Two: Humans and Zombies”. This bit of machinima serves to outline a few of the new features that Patch 1.3 introduces including the War Drive Donation System, Premium Item Merchant Ko, and an expressive collection of performable character emotes, all while extolling the importance of being able to differentiate your fellow man from the walking dead.

Be ever-vigilant! Educate yourself! And watch the trailer here.

SneakShots’ Second Installment Sneaks to Next Week

SneakShots, our new article which offers screenshots of upcoming ongoing content, never-before-seen, will be focusing on the subject of “trinkets” in its next installment. This new inventory slot was outlined briefly in the Lowdown on Patch 2.0 and 2.1 article, posted last week. The first type of trinkets will drop as Cursed rings which can be cleaned up through the Transmogrifier Cube. These items will mostly drop in the Abyss levels, but they can be found elsewhere too. These items are tradable and can be used by all players.

Be sure to keep an eye out this coming Monday for images of the new inventory slot, sample rings, and a more detailed description of the types available!

    The Days Are Just Packed

“Busy” is certainly the word of choice these days at Flagship Studios. “Nonstop” is a popular one, too. Mind you, these are not complaints, they’re proud statements. The Hellgate: London universe is expanding rapidly and we are very glad to have you all be a part of it.

Be well, Templars, Cabalists, and Hunters. And good hunting to you all.

I'd love to have a guild going on test, but as Bogustus says it's deserted most times. The only thing you'd miss out on really is a large auction house pool when that launches.

Eh well it is a test server. I don't mind helping out testing some code when it helps me out ie seeing blademaster revamp before I have to make semi perm desicions on the live server. But the reality is I pay FSS to provide me a solid gaming exp. I already have a fulltime job. When I get my couple hours a week to play I want it to be fun not another job. That is why I play 99% of my time on the live server.

I have a fulltime job, I don't get what that has to do with playing on a different server. It's not like you're forced to write out a report everytime you login of how the gameplay experience went, and I've never seen a bug that destroys characters or anything of the like.

Given the free respecs, it's not like you can break your character either.

Like it or not when you are playing on test server you are doing QA on not finished code. Sometimes when it benefits me I will help them out. Other times I feel like it is their job to test their code. Simple as that. You are gauranteed to have less trouble and bugs on the live server. Thus I spend most of my time there.

Uh, right. Well, I guess it's a viewpoint thing. I don't feel that just because they're getting some benefit out of it, I should purposefully not play there unless I feel extra generous. If I help out, it means that in the long run they can spend more time on other things.

As I said, I have never seen major bugs or trouble on the test centre that prevented me playing aside from one instance where the servers crashed, and considering all the major bugs that have appeared when patches hit live, I don't see it as a reason to stay away.

Willis, did you just play solo on the Test Centre? I'm going to try and find a guild to join up with there.

Damn I'm so pissed, I was in one of those Hell rifts killin dudes, after clearing out the rift I traveled back through the portal to the earth realm and died instantly, I mean INSTANTLY as a dozen leapers just dove on me the moment I portaled in. There was no few seconds of invulnerability or anything just instant death, and then it happened AGAIN as I hit the respawn in zone button and it dropped me right in front of my headstone because I died in front of the portal. So I died 2 times in less than 10 seconds and it made me so mad.

Oh and that China doll effect is still going on when you zoom in on your characters face. I got in a corner so I could get a really good look at my character and I noticed that the reflections are broken too. I was out doors in the London River and the reflection maps were from the city streets... I looked at it again when I was in the safe area and it worked right there.

There's really no reason to play single player. It's all instanced, so you never have to group or see anyone, except in hubs.

    Weapon question.
I can add a mod that add say 10% fire damage, and that gives that weapon a chance to ignite?

If so, I can mod the ignite strength and get more ignites?

What if I just add an ignite strength mod to a weapon that has 0 fire damage? Nothing, right?

One of the tips in the official forum says "Don't add +ignite to weapsons with no fire damage" - that, to me, implies that adding fire damage gives you a chance to ignite - and adding ignite to a 0 FD weapon is useless.

yeah, adding fire damage makes it do some fire damage, and gives a chance to ignite

I just hit 42 and seem to have run out of interesting things to do.

I can fight high 40's monsters just fine, but my next station is Liverpool, and everything there seems to be 51-58+, and 51's just seem to kick my ass. Especially vortex wraiths; they've always been nasty, but a pair of them spent a good 5 minutes raping and chasing THREE of us all around one map until we finally seperated them and killed them off with a lot of cursing and dying from my companions. I've had boss fights that weren't as hard or as fatal as those little fuckers.

So I'm sorta stuck; I don't want to grind at monument station zones forever, but liverpool stuff is just asking to be killed repeatedly. The LFG tool isn't much help, as the few groups looking seem to be trying to buy/sell things, 50's farming for heads, and the ocassional group that seems promising but pans out around 40% of the time.

btw, any idea why I'd get kicked from a group for having a haste bot out? That seemed strange to me. Nothing was said, just "plz dont use haste bot" and when I asked "Why not?" (very politely) I was booted out.

So am I cursed to farm monument station zones for another level or two, does the jump to Liverpook just suck that badly, or is Stonehenge my only recourse? I'm thinking of snagging it, if just for a month, to see how things are, but I thought I'd ask here first.

I don't know if they're still taking transfers, but if they are, you could mess around on the test realm and try out both quickly, at least at early levels.

Failing that, pick one and run with it. If you really don't like it much, you'll be able to respec out of it when 2.0 hits.

Going to give it a spin again. Anyone got a decent Marksman build?

Ravager rounds, beacon, pick a strike or grenade. If you get a strike or grenade, get elemental beacon. 1 point in escape. Max out multishot.

Also, if you roll on the test server you get free respecs and double xp.

Actually, I may just roll a guild on the test server. Halving my level up time is very appealing, plus getting to play with all the new toys is a plus.

Bogustus has also said that there will be additional vendors on TC so you can buy some of the new items that'll be drops.

So how does this Stonehenge business work? You go there from the Templar base right? Can you go there anytime or is there a level range or what? What, basically, is going on?

So I was asking around today in the chat channels on wether I should roll a character on Elite or not.

Apparently it seems there's more people playing Elite than Normal now? At least that's what the people in the channels were saying.
