Futurama: Beast with a Billion Backs

The 2nd feature-length Futurama movie gets released on DVD later this month. It continues from the cliffhanger-ending of the previous film
(in which the universe begins to tear itself apart)
leading to all sorts of sci-fi shenanigans.

I watched this movie last night and my initial impression is that it is a very different film than the first. Benders Big Score was paced kinda strangely and frankly, I felt there weren't enough jokes for a 90 minute film. With this second film, they seem to have hit their stride, I was laughing pretty consistently and, as always, it feels like a good sci-fi movie with jokes, not just a comedy set in space. The humor also seems, I dunno, darker, lots of morbid jokes. Fry is still very emo, but his plotline is more central and thus fits better with the movies central themes.

Opinions? Reviews? Post 'em here.

It's good to hear that it's a little better. I liked the first film, but it definitely felt like they were having trouble getting back into the groove.

BBS was good, but a bit too self-referential and erratic. Way too much "we're back!" for my liking, but I suppose you can't fault it for that. I loved the plot, though.

This sounds awesome. Star spawn of Cthulhu, fuck yeah.

Awesome movie. The first was very somber I think in tone and the scammer joke got old but this? Fucking hilarious, seriously, laughs at all the little jokes abounded and when Bender
    Sacrificed his kid so easily
I was crying with laughter and the end with Bender the
    pirate assaulting heaven?

    Fucking epic.

an awful lot of the first film was 'hey we are back, that's awesome. Network executives are retarded. lol.'

this, not being the first one back, didn't have all that. Really more like a whole big pile of fairly typical Futurama, which is great.

I liked the first one better, but still greatly entertaining. Favorite part:
Throwing the koala through the mini-anomaly and out the window.

And there is a lot more Zapp in this one.

My biggest complaint with the first movie was that it wasn't funny. They focused way too much on random science fiction shenanigans, and less on actual funny parts.

Futurama was always at its best when it wasn't dealing with its continuity. Stand-alone episodes, maybe with some past references, made me laugh the most.

I am too, but there was still way way too much of it. It was fine for the first 30 minutes, but got old real fast.

However, I'm glad to hear the second movie is an improvement. Futurama is one of my favorite shows, and I want to see it succeed.

After watching it, I kinda disagree. I think this one was funnier, but it also felt very poorly paced, and the story wasn't nearly as good.

It was great. I also loved the first one because, Hey, I was happy as hell they were back and I wanted all sorts of inside jokes and look who we are moments.
Benders Son, and Benders Pirate Assault on Heaven cracked me up. I think I'll watch it again tonite.
When the Professor and his Wernstrom start hucking all the robots through the mini anomoly. Plus the 4 seconds of silence before you hear SPLAT when they toss the baby Koala through. GOLD JERRY GOLD!

I'm going to have to Watch this again when I get home.

I'm kind of surprised for all the positive reviews I've seen of this movie. Honestly, I hated it. And I really, really love Futurama.

I have no idea how this could have happened. I only laughed at one part
"It means 'one who does not sleep with my superior officer'. That's the literal translation."
and the rest of it felt really poorly paced. I enjoyed the first movie phenomenally, which is almost too bad in retrospect, since it must have gotten my hopes up really high or something in anticipation of this one.

Judging from how highly everyone else seems to be speaking of it, though, it must just be me.

You are not alone. I found the humour sophomoric, almost Family Guy-esque. Most of it was entirely too predictable. Its literally stuff weve seen before. The plot itself... well, its futurama so I dont expect much but when the opera-themed last episode of your tv series is far superior to the two movies youve made...

I now find myself hoping futurama will NOT return, if this is indicative of what the writers are putting out.

In short, I want new Futurama - not giant fan-wank.

No, it was definitely poorly paced, and the story was kinda blah. It did have a lot of funny moments though.

Nah. I'm with you. I loved the robot tossing (and koala... AWAY) and a couple random parts, but I really didn't find any of the tentacle stuff funny at all, nor the League of Robots. I also really really hated Colleen once they revealed that she was a whore. Zapp also wasn't his normal charming self. It just seemed like they were trying too hard with him.

I laughed a lot, but wasn't really dazzled by it. I'm not sure the feature length is working out for them really, it's way more dependant on plot which isn't always the highlight of futurama. The best bits, are as always, the offhand bits.

honestly the pacing is bad because they have to be able to split the movie into 4 coherent parts. I've found if you watch 20 minutes and wait for a scene change and stop for a while it is much easier to watch and follow the plot

There were some funny bits but overall it was just bleh
