Activision joins the ranks of Sony in stupid advertising
According to here. In their bid to promote guitar hero they've desecrated a statue dedicated to Jimi Hendrix.
A pic for your wondering pleasure:
It looks like they're just stickers or something though. If they had used spray paint or something I'd see it as worser on so many levels. Still damn stupid of them, Hendrix is a musical god. I think he'd be kinda spinning in his grave with this.

I've got a spare copy of Portal, if anyone wants it message me.
As much as this is a shit move on their part, I'd think Jimi would like that Guitar Hero really brings alot of attention back to classic rock and music in general.
"During Acclaim's decline towards bankruptcy, they made several infamous business and marketing decisions. One example was a promise to UK gamers that a 500 pound prize would be awarded to up to five winners who would name their baby "Turok", to promote the release of Turok Evolution. Another was an attempt to buy advertising space on actual tombstones for a Shadowman game."
Saw that on Kotaku the other day. Fuckin' blasphemy. I also agree that if Jimi were alive he'd probably dig anything that promotes or gets people interested in music - but you don't need to desecrate the statue of a true god of rock to promote your fucking game that everyone in the world already knows about!

As somebody who worked reelance for Activisions PR recently, I can confirm - they are really very stupid.
I left the project over a month ago as I didnt want to be associated with it, but even now they pay my girlfriend 300 Euros a week for 50 words of translation a day, which is read by precisely nobody. Literally. The youtube channel barely gets 1000 views a month, total.

Heh, I should find out if/what me and my mum won on Friday!
What if Anheiser-Busch decided to put a sticker on the Statue of Liberty's torch to make it look like a can of Budweiser?
A statue is meant to be a symbol of respect and admiration, and to use it as a cheap marketting gimmick is both low-brow and disrespectful. It's also vandalism, which is illegal.

I'd admire them because that's a big fucking statue.

The difference is that the Statue of Liberty is a national monument, and the torch isn't already a can.
Was it a stupid thing to do? Yes.
Is it worth any sort of publi- er, internet outcry? Not at all. Just get someone to remove the stickers and move on.

I think a fine would be in order as well. Obviously it won't do a thing to Activision's financial state, but it would still be a good message to send.
A better PR move would have been to contact the city and obtain a permit to put on a concert in front of the statue featuring some of the Hendrix songs from GH3. Oh, wait...

Um...what makes you think they didn't ask permission to put stickers on the statue?

Because cities generally don't give out "Deface Public Monument" permits?

Seeing as the festival is having Guitar Hero 3 songs played on stage I'm going to assume this may have official backing.
I'm well known to be a cynical bastard, but it seems to me that the sort of people getting "outraged" about this are the sort of people who have constructed their persona around a "passion" for music. The sort of people that say things like "music is my life" or bemoan that music has never been the same since Kurt Cobain redecorated his wallpaper.
Yes, Hendrix was a good guitarist, but a god? really? And as countless others have pointed out, its a few stickers on a statue - hardly earth-shattering in its outrageousness....

But still petty, annoying, and stupid. Since this is a discussion forum, and since the topic was brought up, it's fair game to criticize Activision for their actions. It's not like I'm screaming for bloody vengeance or anything.

I would go so far as to say that music is my life. I have a whole philosophy around it and everything. But I agree with you. This is no reason to get so upset.

Not really...I'm not much of a rock fan nor am I known to idolize people...still think it's pretty tasteless.

It's a statue, not his corpse. It's not even his tombstone.

I am not seeing the reason for outrage here.

Considering the statue is on the grounds of a museum, I imagine they got permission from the owners to put some temporary stickers on it.

That and when you think of Hendrix you think of guitars, when you hear guitar hero you think guitars.
If you think Beer when you think of America, something's wrong with you.
Is there a new Guitar Hero out or something?
America would be rum.
Or if you strapped on a big fake stomach.
I think of bad beer, so bud would work in context.
Aerosmith maybe?
Hell, it's on the Isle of Wight so maybe it's a way to push sales in the UK now that Rock Band has been released?

You don't live in the US, so therefore your opinion doesn't count.
