And silly me, I didn't notice until AFTER purchasing both tickets.
Is this a problem for anyone else?
My allegiance would be clear if I hadn't already committed to escorting an out-of-state family member around Bumbershoot. As it is, it looks like I will be waiting for final schedules for both events so I can split my time between the two.
On a related note, has anyone ever walked from Seattle Center to the WSCT Center? Google maps says it is only 1.4 miles...
Thankfully Labor Day is firmly in September next year, so I won't have to choose again :P
The WSCTC is a bit of a hike from the Seattle Center, but it's not too bad. Easier if you take a bus; if you hike down to 3rd Avenue, it looks like Route 5 goes most of the way.
When i worked at a Revolution bar and grill, I would often walk the distance from the westlake area of downtown seattle to the seattle center in order to bypass traffic. It wasn't that big of a deal, just walk down 5th avenue and boom, you are there.
But, if you are really lazy:
Option 1: walk north on seventh avenue until you reach olive way. Walk up olive way until you see a big Starbucks with a rock bench and trees by the bustop and catch the number 8 to seattle center.
Option 2: Catch the number 43 going up to capitol hill and get off somewhere on John street or Olive way, just make sure you passed the starbucks. Then, cross to the other side of the street and catch the number 8 to seattle center.
Option 3: Walk to Westlake center and catch the monorail to the seattle center.
The first two options would only cost you $1.50
while the monorail would cost a lost more for round trip tickets.
I've been trying to do Bumbershoot for years but the timing has never worked out. Once the PAX schedule comes out, I can make some hard choices about whether I can sneak away for Bumbershoot.

No problem for me because I stopped giving bumbershoot any of my money about 8 years ago. I hate drinking beer in a corral, and I hate lines for honey buckets outside of drinking corrals, and I hate twenty different tickets for different shows, and how its impossible to see what you want freely any more. /rant off
Catch the #19 Bus from 4th & Pike (like, 3 blocks from the WSCTC) headed North, it'll stop at Denny & Broad at the Southern end of the Seattle Center. Not sure how fare the free-ride zone covers, but if it goes all the way to the Seattle Center then its free which is nice.
Also, its a short walk from WSCTC to Westlake Center where you can hop the monorail directly to Bumbershoot for the more "fun" or touristy experience.
i believe you can buy all day bus passes from the driver for the cost of two trips during the weekend. ($3?) So if you plan on going back and forth throughout the day, it will save you a few bucks.

Listen. And understand. That Misterioso is out there. He can't be bargained with. He can't be reasoned with. He doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And he absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead..drunk.
I'll be trying to catch Beck, Thao Nguyen, !!!, Saul Williams, Neko Case, and maybe Man Man or M. Ward on Saturday.
Then Minus the Bear, Battles and Del the Funkee Homosapien on monday.
but i guess it depends on scheduling
Zach Galifianakis and Beck would be awesome to see. I hate that these overlap. However, I know where I can send the GF if she gets too geeked out and wants some decent music to go watch.
Thanks for the help guys! I have never tried to ride the bus in Seattle so I was a little overwhelmed, but with all the info I am getting I am beginning to think this will not only be doable but a lot of fun as well
This is such a hard choice. I'm not even sure I can afford Bumbershoot. But it would be so amazing too. But PAX is so amazing. But I've been to PAX once. Brah!! My head is gonna explode from the pressure!!!!!*pop*
Agreed. It costs way too much, especially since there are usually only 3 bands I want to see and they are playing either on different days or at the same time as each other. $40 to see one band x 3 days? No effing way.

Good luck getting into those specific concerts, too. There is rarely enough space for everyone, so if you are dying to see any particular band you have to line up first thing in the morning.
I fought the big bosses on this one claiming that PAX and Bumbershoots compete for similar demographics. I was shot down. Sorry folks, looks like you'll have to make some hard choices.

bumbershoot is so overrated. sorry, i don't feel up to making a well supported argument. i've just been to bumbershoot a couple times and been totally disappointed.

I had several people tell me the same thing. I don't feel like paying to wait in a line outside so I may or may not get to see a band I want to. It's not worth taking the time out of PAX.
is it that hard to see a certain band at bumbershoot...
I don't have bumbershoot passes yet and got my pax passes already.
Seeing Beck live would complete my life (you DO NOT want to know how big a fan I am), but I can catch him in Vancouver or LA if it becomes a necessity.
seriously im worried. these are truly the end of days. duke nukem forever is coming out, and the best nintendo ds game on the horizon is a sonic the hedgehog rpg by bioware.
If you're really that big of a fan then pay the extra $100 for the ticket that gives you access to the reserved seating area. I have no specific Bumbershoot experience to tell you how early you'd have to be in line to guarantee the ability to see Beck with a standard ticket.
Apparently the Black Keys are opening for them, but their guitarist is one sloppy motherfucker, so meh.
Ah, last I had seen, the schedule wasn't out yet. This is really good news, because it was the only act I wanted to see this year. I'll now be making an effort to see them.
I'm interested in a couple of the indie acts (!!! and Final Fantasy), but I can't afford anything but a standard ticket and I don't want to waste time waiting in lines.

Bumpershoot is Athsssss... cept for a few..Go to PAX and visit the few performers u want from bumpershoot.

Thanks for the tip, Momo.
Since The Offspring is playing kinda early on Monday, I don't know if this is necessary for them..it's mostly the night acts.. But for a lot of the headliners that play the "Samsung" Main Stage, you need wristbands. Which means they will only be letting people with wristbands in, and the wristbands are handed out throughout the day. For the shows that require wristbands, you'll need to get them secured early in the day, before they run out.
I haven't been to Bumbershoot in years. I used to make the trek every year, but it's gotten prgressively worse. You used to be able to buy all 3 days for $35, but it's $35 each day. You used to be able to get into any show you wanted, now you have to get to the venue at least 30 mins prior to the start, and wait in line..or get wristbands The crowds are horrible, and the vendors lack the uniqueness that they used to have. And don't even think of trying to find parking. I dunno, My GF and I may go on Monday, as it looks like the best day. See Death Cab but only because she is freinds with Chris Walla, and we used to live in the house that they recorded their first album in. Will also see Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Flobots, and Paramore.
If you go on Monday early.. I definitely suggest Vince Mira. They call him Juanny Cash. He's a 17yo kid that covers Johnny Cash like no other. It's insane to see this kid belt out the songs. Also Flatstock is really cool.. Rock posters, Art and such. I enjoy this so much, it's almost worth the cost of the ticket itself.

We've got a guy in Seattle who's securing us tickets to STP.

It is much better for the local performers than it is for the headlining bands. That said, it's way too expensive for what it is.
It isn't as bad as you all make it out to be. As long as you show up to bumbershoot early to get wrist bands on each of the days its like a 1 hr wait in line to see any main show and even thats just if you don't want to wade through a most pit to get the the front. Now seeing side shows is a different story, depending on where its at its relatively easy to get in. There is one stage, don't know what it is off the top of my head, but they do kick you out between shows sooo if you want to see multiple bands on that stage you gotta like pick the best on or somethin, this might have changed from years past. I personally will be hittin up both PAX and Bumbershoot because honestly besides a few speakers, and tournies, and the trip through the exibition hall, theres not much to do between times at PAX and the music pretty much sucks and has been done before at previous PAX years, you can only see so many rock renditions of Mario tunes. And no Optimus Rhyme? No Thanks. (boo to freeze pop, worst show i have almost ever seen besides The Locust)
The monorail doesn't cost that much. Only 4$ for a round trip ticket (per-person that is). However, there are brochures that you should be able to pick up at places (I know there are some in the U.S. Bank Building near the ground floor Starbucks, (the one right by the parking garage elevators) that have coupons for all sorts of things, including the monorail. There might even be some at the convention center.

Oh, Lordy, the final schedules can't come soon enough for me. Bright side is that PAX would focus more on the day and Bumbershoot, more on the night.
Also, its a short walk from WSCTC to Westlake Center where you can hop the monorail directly to Bumbershoot for the more "fun" or touristy experience.
But then I saw that Del Tha Funky Homosapien was going to be there. I think I might need to venture off from PAX for a short while.

I heart Tim Finn. And Anti-Flag are just sheer brilliance.
