    How is hunting with a spear not legal? That seems like the most basic shit in the world. It would be like making a fire with a flint or getting mauled by a mountain lion illegal.

    The reason it's illegal to hunt deer with it is because the darts are too light, and rarely result in a clean kill. In most states, this has led to a blanket ban on spear hunting because nobody has been interested in coming up with a good list of game that you can hunt with an atlatl.
