War – 210 A.D. Zhuge Liang returns with 100,000 Arrows
For the past few years there has been nothing but violence in the state of China. Skirmish after skirmish between all three sides happened all throughout the land. Supplies were dwindling in all nations, especially in the Shu. Emperor Ling no longer had any arrows for his bowmen, and with great concern he contacted his chief strategist Zhuge Liang. Ling told Zhuge of the problem and gave him ten days to produce 100,000 arrows. Zhuge responded he would only need 3 days, 20 boats, and scarecrows. Zhuge spent the first two days doing nothing but playing his Zither, and Emperor Ling was quite puzzled at what Zhuge was going to do.
On the third day, in the early morning, he sent the 20 boats filled with scarecrows down the river into the Wei territory. It turns out he waited three days for enough fog to provide cover for his boats. He had his soldiers beat loudly on drums and shout out war chants as he was going by the enemy bases. The Wei immediately went to their positions and began shooting arrows at the boats, into the scarecrows. Later that day Zhuge brought back the boats with 100,000 arrows just like he promised.
However Zhuge’s cunning made him infamous throughout the land. In the comfort of his own home, in the midst of planning his next attack, he was assassinated. All that Zhuge left behind was a will that told Ling to put Jiang Wei in charge of Shu’s strategy. Zhuge wasn’t the only person to die during this period; numerous citizens were accused of being spies and lynched. Even more of the population died in battles or assassination attempts. The Emperor once again employed his strategy of executing the least popular person in China. The people voted for a young soldier by the name of Seriously. Emperor Ling’s personal army went to Seriously’s home and detained him. He was killed by firing squad the next day, his last words being “I’m just a random Shu soldier.†The death toll in China was high, and it was only increasing. There is an old Chinese saying, “Sacrifices are needed for peaceâ€. How many lives will be enough of a sacrifice?
