Help me find the right game for me

edited June 2008 in Games and Technology
Let me explain better. I'm a huge gamer(not literally), and I've played an enormous amount of games. However, I've never found my game. Most people I know or have talked to, have that game. The game that they lavish incredible amounts of time into, trying to be the best, getting the most out of it, etc. For my brother, its WoW(and EQ previously). Best friend, MGS. Other good friend, CS. Halo for one, etc etc. I don't have this game. My general path with games is getting them, playing until I'm quite good at it, and then quitting. Maybe I have gamer ADD, but once I know I can beat ~80% of people I play in a game, I see little reason to keep at it. The games I can't get that good at, I usually don't enjoy, not because I lose, but because I don't enjoy the time spent getting good at it.

So, this comes down to you, G&T. I cross my fingers, hoping you can help me find some game I didn't know about, or casually passed by, when it could be, in fact, my game. I have idea's on what this game should be like, for the most part.

-Multiplayer(though PvE is ok along with a multiplayer aspect)
-Rewards over time. Not talking about getting a higher rank, or things like that. Some form of leveling or at least gear gathering/purchasing/whatnot.
-Huge replayability.

If I ended the post here, people would shower me with MMO's. The only problem is, I've played quite a few of them, and most bored me to tears. WoW, EQ, DAoC, etc, the combat was simply boring to the point that I regularly had to force myself to stay awake. EVE, while a lot funner in combat, had too much traveling and time wasted doing nothing, along with me not liking the leveling system. I have enjoyed a couple "mmo's", like WWIIOL and Planetside, but I rarely felt rewarded enough for my efforts. After the first few ranks in WWIIOL, you get no real benefit from ranking up. Planetside, after hitting level six, anything else was just to give you more options at one time, but nothing new really.

Now, I'm not too worried about genre. A shooter, action, RPG, or strategy would all be fine, if they fit those categories well. A few games I assume will be brought up, that I can already shoot down:

1. Diablo 2 - Great game, love it, but the endgame is just endless farming and grinding. The replayability just isn't there for me to play it on a regular basis.

2. Mythos - Similar to D2, but felt too slow paced.

3. Hellgate london - Another good game, and I loved it in normal, but once you get to nightmare, you just grind and grind, nothing feels like an upgrade, and its just not fun anymore.

4. Age of Conan - I actually want to try this out, but its expensive(being new still), plus monthly fee's, and I hear some bad things along with the good... I'm holding out for a free trial

5. Call of Duty 4 - This is actually a great example of what I'd like, in terms of replayability, rewards, etc. The only problem is, I already hit level 55 :/

One last thing, though I assume(and would prefer) this to be a PC game, I have pretty much every console and handheld except for the PS3.

TL;DR : Sorry for the long post, but really, I can't condense it much. Just skim it.

A little bit. I played a good amount of the single player on the 360, and a little MP on the PS3. It was fun, but definitely not the game

Perhaps the Civilization series, or some other form of 4X game? I haven't played them myself (a mistake I hope to correct soon enough), but people here have talked about how they literally spent hundreds of hours playing these games. If you don't want to leave the house or even spend money, I'd suggest giving Dwarf Fortress a try. But I'll give you fair warning: you will suck. It will take hours and hours to learn. But there is no end to the content in the foreseeable future. The guy developing it has basically devoted his life to it.

I do love civ games, and I'm actually damn excited for Civ Revolution. But, like all other games, I play it for a couple weeks, and then it lays flaccid on my desktop for a year.

As for Dwarf Fortress, I actually did try it for a little bit before. I like roguelikes, and DF wasn't bad(I wasn't playing adventure mode, to preempt that question), but its too slow paced for me, the rewards aren't much, and no multiplayer.

Great suggestions all, but I turn to the forums when I've scratched my brain of every ounce of information. I rarely have easy questions.

Maybe something like Cyber Nations? It's multiplayer, endless, and there's lots of room for expanding your nation. It can get pretty complex too. You listed a lot of popular retail games so I don't know if you're interested in free internet games, but I thought I would throw it out there.

    Hey, I remember cyber nations.

I've never really been able to get into browser based games though. Pretty much any game I play that forces me to wait real time before I can do more stuff, leads to me less and less frequently checking it, and eventually forgetting about them.

Not to mention they aren't terribly exciting.

I played a good bit of MGO at my friends house, who has the PS3. Its fun, no doubt, but as someone who's played just about every popular FPS out there, its simply mediocre to some of the better offerings out there.

Natural selection was indeed good times, and I played for days and days. But, like most other games, the fun passed.

Will- I don't need one game to play, but I would like to find that game that really clicks for me. I currently have nothing I want to play, which makes me a sad panda. As for gamefly, I've looked through its selection, and few of the games looked that interesting to me. I have fairly picky tastes in games in general.

Strangely, I was planning on posting a similar request... I've felt quite 'meh' over the past few days and couldn't quite put my finger on what it was but I realised it's down to not currently having a game that I'm really into -- or rather playing a game and wanting it to be THE game but feeling let down...

which brings me onto my only advice for you: I'd maybe leave Age of Conan for a while and try it in a month or two. I bought it at release and while it is enjoyable to a point, and looks fantastic if you have the machine for it, there's just too much unfinished and unpolished.

You know when you play a game and it just 'feels' right and the controls and gameplay elements are intuitive and cleverly designed? There's a real feeling of satisfaction there and it makes the game seem almost effortlessly fun. Age of Conan, as it stands currently, is basically something of the opposite: nothing works quite as well as it should, and everything lacks polish.

It borders on depressing to play because there are so many good ideas but they're just poorly executed. It's like watching a really great, exciting film which is ruined by an inexplicably poor script.

    That's my 2p.

(note, games I AM enjoying at the moment are COD4, which I'm revisiting since it errored and reset my rank to 0; and the PA game which is just refreshing and fun.)

I'm sort of in the same boat as you here, where I tend to hop from game to game. Usually I can find a game get into for long stretches, I was all about EQ, D2, WoW in their respective times. Warhammer Online looks to be shaping up quite well, and people I've spoken to say it already has quite a bit of content (including endgame) and very responsive devs, and it's due to release later this millennium, so that's a plus.

It even focuses on PvP over PvE in the endgame, which if done correctly can lead to a much lengthier period of fun than limited PvE content. It also has extensive rewards system for PvP combat. Might want to keep your eye on that.

Well the good thing about Gamefly is that it doesn't matter if the game is crap or not - you can just fire it back and get another one if you don't like it. It might be that something you never considered really works for you. And then you can do a Let's Play on it and we'll all be like 'oh'.

Really, I don't think you can find "your game" like this if your taste is really picky. Sometimes you just need to encouter it out of the blue.

For example, my game is Spider-Man 2. Probably not the first on any "you've GOT to play this" list.

Im kind of the same in that I would buy a game play it, then never pick it up or look at it again, there are some games though that I have played through a number of times like the FF games, GTA games and of course HL/portal, I wouldn't really classify any of them as "The game" though just as games I really enjoyed playing. I know you are looking for a PC game but if you like rhythem games I would highly recommend gitaroo man, this is one game that really took me by suprise, hadn't heard anything about it and bought it out of shear bordem, I find the best games are the random ones you pick up or have no idea what they are so have no preconceptions about them

Hm...if you're not finding the "right" game maybe you're setting your sights too narrowly. For example, for the longest time, my favorite genre was Japanese RPGs. What's my one special game? Pac-Man: Championship Edition. Yeah, that's about as far from a Japanese RPG as you can get, but the game just clicked for me and I can play it over and over, striving to improve my score (currently on the top 3 leaderboards for some of the modes).
