Creating the Ultimate PS2 Collection

edited June 2008 in Games and Technology
One day last week, I sat down and said to myself, "Self, we have collected games for many years, but never have we created an Ultimate collection for one console." That got me thinking. I've purchased many games over the years, and I have a fairly decent bundle of games for each and every console. All the way from the Atari 2600, to the Xbox 360, I like to think that I've tried to gather up some of the very best titles. What I have never really attempted was to try and obtain EVERY great game for one single console.

Since the Playstation 2 was really one of the first consoles that I really truly embraced as more than a gaming machine, I've decided to make it my focus. Yes, I realize that it is probably one of the hardest machines to build a definitive collection for (due to the sheer size), but at the moment it happens to be one of the easiest. There are absolutely tons of used titles cluttering up the shelves at Gamestop and it really is surprising at how cheap some of the titles are selling for.

So help me out Penny Arcade! What are some of the titles that you consider "must-haves" for the Playstation 2? I actually have a fairly substantial PS2 collection (about 100 games) ranging from "God of War 2," to the "Digital Devil Saga" series, but I'd really like to see what other people would consider buy worthy.

Here is a list of what I have so far:

Devil May Cry 3 for fun hack-and-slash.
Soul Reaver 2 for bone-chillingly good story.
Shadow of the Colossus for a haunting, highly-artistic experience.
Kingdom Hearts for a charming and fun RPG game. The sequel's also good, though I wouldn't consider it a 'must-have' unless you adore the first one.

Also there are way more critically acclaimed games out there than the ones I listed, but I just never got around to playing (the Onimusha or Fatal Frame sequels, for example).

But that's as comprehensive as my personal list goes, and if I had to pick the gems you really need that people won't be reciting left and right in here, I would pick Gitaroo-Man, Aggressive Inline and Klonoa 2.

Even if your list was just the top five, it would need Shadow of the Colossus in it.

    Some others to consider:

    Rez

All GTAs, but especially San andreas.

    Timespiltters 2

I consider Chulip a must-own because it's the weirdest game ever made. I got it on release day and I don't regret it one bit, even if I only played it for about 3 hours. It's just too weird to pass up. Also it's really cheap.

Seems as though I'm off to a good start. I have all the Metal Gears, Guitar Heroes, Silent Hill 2, all of the GTAs except Vice City Stories, Shadow of the Colossus... Quite a big number on the list.

Quick question though. Aggressive Inline? Is that a pretty good game? I saw it tonight at Gamestop for a pretty decent price. I really also have to find myself a copy of Shadow Hearts. I have Covenant, and I'm still kicking myself for not preordering and getting the free copy of the original.

As far as I'm concerned, it's the second-best extreme sports game of all time, right behind THPS4. It still holds up today, good graphics, incredible licensed soundtrack, inventive levels and fun goals. Get it if you can, I paid $50 for it back in the day after playing the demo and really got my money's worth out of it.

ok, it's more about getting the best titles for each genre and going from there, in. The idea wouldn't be to own every good game because that would take forever and also take a stupid amount of money. The ultimate PS2 collection would be filled up with all the games that you look back and go "man, ps2 really pushed things forward".

    Games like:

    SoTC
    Ico
    DMC1 and 3
    ZoE2
    Amplitude

    things like that.

    Yeah...except it's not your thread, buddy. :P

He said games you would consider must-haves. That's all. That could mean anything. Apparently that one guy considers Enter the Matrix a must-have. That's perfectly fine.

And going by your system, your own personal bias would be getting in the way as well, because while ZOE2 is awesome (and a game I forgot on my list), it didn't push anything forward. Neither did Amplitude (Frequency arguably did).

I wouldn't call Odin Sphere a masterpiece. The graphics side is fantastic, and despite me wanting to like it SO MUCH the gameplay let it down completely. It has some neat ideas, but the actual fighting feels very shallow and repetitive. It just became excruciatingly boring after a while.

I was so disappointed by that game, I still am to an extent. I want to love you Odin Sphere! Why won't you let me?

Yes. Stay clear of Odin Sphere. It's scary how much love such a rubbish game gets.

This is, of course, where you start running into problems when you ask people to contribute to a 'best of' style list.

Games you already own aside, I'd limit myself to one game from any particular series, unless you absolutely need to get them all for story reasons, or because they differ substantially in gameplay. Like, get the best Hitman game and call it a day on that. You won't miss any of the silly story, and you'll have the best example of the gameplay.

Eh, I have Arcana Heart, but I wouldn't really say that it needs to be a part of any "Ultimate Collection."

I REALLY enjoyed the Onimusha series, so I say 1-3 (3 for the opening movie alone, oh my God) and Dawn of Dreams should be in there. If I had to pick just one though, probably 3. Forget Blade Warriors, it's not so great.

We have the same goal. Here is my personal planned list, including imports, created via going through a list of every PS2 game, ever. I put it together a couple months ago so it needs updating with some recent titles. (Games with PS3 problems are marked with a * for severe issues, ? for minor issues. Also, some of these games I may buy for other platforms.)
