August 24th Update:
Noticed this over at 360fanboy. If true I suppose imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Take it for what it's worth, but we've received a tip from a source close to Microsoft's marketing department who has shed some light on the Xbox 360 price cuts that are rumored to be going down in a few weeks time. More specifically, the $199 Xbox 360 Arcade bundle.
According to the source, Microsoft will be positioning the Arcade bundle to be in direct competition with the Wii, meaning that the marketing push behind it will focus on family friendly entertainment. With family oriented games on the packaging, the Arcade console will come packaged with the traditional Arcade goodies (512MB memory card, etc.), the new Fall update pre-loaded as well as a motion controller and a few motion controlled mini games developed by Rare. That's right, a motion controller! Supposedly, the motion controller will work with all 360 consoles and will even be sold separately, bundled with an even more expansive list of mini motion controlled games. This new $199 Xbox 360 Arcade bundle is said to release Holiday 2008.
File this all under rumors'ville for now, but don't totally discredit the information. $199 Arcade's are sounding very likely and, with Microsoft's push to undercut the Wii, matching the Wii's motion controls sounds like a total possibility. We'll just have to wait and see.
New 199 360 to come packaged with Motion Controller?!

360 Pro is being phased out at 299 while supplies last. New Sku coming out with more storage space (60 gigs) retailing
@350
July 13, 2008 - It's official. The Xbox 360 Pro model is now $299 and is being phased out in favor of a new SKU with more storage space, according to a news release sent out by Microsoft today.
Rumors of a price cut have been flying all week, and Target made it official from a retailing standpoint earlier today. But today's Microsoft press release is the first confirmation we've heard about a new SKU.
The 60 GB model will retail for $349, which the Pro model previously sold for. The Elite model, which comes with a 120 GB hard drive, remains at $449, and the Arcade SKU, which has no hard drive, is still $279.
"We know consumers need more and more space to store the amazing digital content Xbox 360 offers, and we're giving it to them at no extra charge," said Albert Penello, Xbox director of product management at Microsoft. "No one device offers the depth and breadth of entertainment that Xbox 360 can deliver, and now you'll have three times the storage to manage all that great content."
The new 60 GB model will be available in early August, Microsoft said, and the discounted Pro will only be available "while supplies last."

I wonder how (if) Sony will respond to this. The original source can be found

Oh. $279.99.
Meh. It's funny (not really) that even if they did drop it to $250, Nintendo at this point has zero reason to drop the price of the Wii. The Arcade could go down to $200 and N could probably still keep the Wii at $250.

Poor sony. I wonder if it was worth losing the console wars in the west this generation in order to make Blu-Ray a victorious format.
Europe already got a price drop on the XBox 360 3 months ago so I doubt that they'll be getting another one any time soon.

Ah well, can not blame me for hoping to spend even less money.... :P
They ought to toss in a free game or something, too, though. Worked wonders last Christmas season. Something that isn't generating big sales anymore, and that Microsoft owns, so they won't really lose any money.
Seriously, I'd already have a 360 if I were convinced that the system's hardware was as reliable as the PS3 or Wii's. The whole RROD thing still bothers me.

All premiums/elites already come with Forza 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I don't think that's going to change.
This would explain why we haven't heard similar rumors about the Arcade or Elite models.
I thought they discontinued that after Christmas? I remember CAG freaking out about it.
I'm totally not up on the whole "read the watts on the box and look at the serial # to see if it has the Falcon" stuff, but I'm under the impression that most units without the new hardware are already gone from the shelves (since Microsoft never pulled them). Apparently even if you do get a bad unit the replacement system is really, really good. I've known a dozen+ people to have their 360s crap out and like... 1... had a bad experience with Microsoft. They send you a free box, get it back within 2 weeks, etc.
This is untrue (at least at Gamestop). F2 and MUA are only offered with the Elite and the Halo edition.
Hm..
I guess I'll have to learn the details on checking the box for the newest chip or wahtever..

Anecdotally, I've had my Wii crap out on me and my 360 is still going strong.
The difference is that Nintendo replaced my Wii for free even though it was a couple weeks out of warranty, and I wouldn't expect the same from Microsoft. But MS has a three-year warranty on the most common problem, so it's not too bad.
oo whoopers
That blows.
I think the moral of the story is to keep your savegames on a backup memory card, just in case.
eh that's true for the original hardware but the newer batch is more of a 50/50 gamble
slighty better!
RRODs don't damage the hard drive, they're caused by one of the chips on the motherboard coming unseated. Your save files are fine, no hideously overpriced Microsoft flash memory needed.
so sometime in the next two weeks i guess
Only Steve Jobs can do that. I think he has it trademarked.
Nobody I know of on the forums has had a Halo 3 360 die on them. Including me.
Everyone that had a premium has had to replace it at least once in the TBK thread it seems.
I guess the new rumor is that they're going to announce a 60gig model to replace the premium
that's just something i heard
@gamefacts - Totally and utterly true gaming facts on the regular!

But only $50? Really? I'm not complaining much, though—considering that I bought my Core 360 about a year and a half ago on clearance for $200, and then bought a used HD for $60. I'm sure as hell glad I wasn't waiting for official price drops!
Same here; I got that video-card overheating problem with my Wii last Christmas and had to send it in. The 360 I have is still going strong, although it sounds like a fighter jet taking off when I play certain games (Gears, Kameo, Dead Rising) and I've gotten a few DREs with Dead Rising, sadly.

This gen has been horrible for price drops. And it looks like it'll stay horrible for some time.
Oh, and when my 360 croaked Microsoft somehow got mine back in less than a week after I sent it in. I've heard people had worse experiences, though. YMMV.
The disc drive in my current unit is failing. If they drop the price of an arcade to $200, I'll just forego getting it repaired and just buy a new one, especially with the new content manager.
The month long waits are over. It's back to the usual one week or so.
It only took so long before because everyone decided to take advantage of the 3 year warranty.
I guess we know what Microsoft's E3 conference capper is going to be. I'm still not convinced of the purported new 60GB 360 model, but stranger things have happened.
