In their defense, Odysseus didn't have to tell that cyclops what his name was, and where he was from, and who his father was. Poseidon never would have known to come after him if he had just kept his damn mouth shut.
And his men didn't have to eat Helios' cattle. I mean, he told them not to.
And they didn't have to open up the bag of winds that Aeolus gave him, thinking it was loot. That was pretty dumb, too.
Really, Homer makes it clear that a lot of what happens is their fault, even if the gods were involved in some ways.

The Illiad is about being a man
All fighting and bleeding and rattling off your lineage before combat
The Odyssey is about womanly things
Like the home and culture and civilization.
What it means to be a good citizen/husband/wife

segregation from olympus! the worst kind of entrapment!
right now I'm reading Snow Crash again
then I'll read Yiddish Policemen's Union
Then The Road
then probably The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
then I dunno what next
I'm writing a paper on Pride and Prejudice. It isn't going well so far.
what's that Mark Twain quote about Austen
Pick one
Jane Austen? Why I go so far as to say that any library is a good library that does not contain a volume by Jane Austen. Even if it contains no other book.
To me his prose is unreadable--like Jane Austin's [sic]. No there is a difference. I could read his prose on salary, but not Jane's. Jane is entirely impossible. It seems a great pity that they allowed her to die a natural death.
I haven't any right to criticise books, and I don't do it except when I hate them. I often want to criticise Jane Austen, but her books madden me so that I can't conceal my frenzy from the reader; and therefore I have to stop every time I begin. Everytime I read 'Pride and Prejudice' I want to dig her up and beat her over the skull with her own shin-bone.
I love book threads! My dad brought this book over for me to read, 'Snow Crash'. It's alright except the author likes to talk about the 15 year old girl in a sexual matter that is downright creepy.
I was gonna finish it today at school but i left it at my house
If it's high school, junior college, community college, or equivalent, that's a good start. Make some high-falutin' philosophical interpretation. It doesn't matter if it's valid so long as you can back it up to whatever standard the scope and depth of the assignment allows. You don't even really half to understand more than half of what you write, so long as it sounds right and it's not your prof's favorite book.
If it's a real school, that's still a pretty decent topic so long as you actually know what those words mean.
I go to a pretty intense college, Reed College, and yeah I do know what they mean, I'm just stuck writing it. The prompt is basically, "Is Elizabeth better off marrying Darcy in the end? Is the ending of P&P a triumph, a surrender, or what?"
I've never actually read it, I only know a basic overview of the plot.
That is a good title.
I usually go systematic when I have trouble starting. Go through the major elements one by one, shaping them to fit the conclusion your working toward. The start is really obvious that way. It leads to technically inferior writing, but it gives you enough structure to do a re-write pretty much entirely dedicated to style.
Bendery I can't tell if you're being facetious or not
surely you've read Snow Crash you're on the internet
Actually this is my first read through of it, i've been in a literature cesspool of required reading for basic english classes. This is the first book I've read out of my own time in months.
But really, I don't think there is a single chapter where he doesn't mention Y.T.s vagina in one way or another.

I've seen it a few times at my bookstore
NAPOREON SIGNAL = LIT
why would they assign that to 7th graders
what's that Mark Twain quote about Austen
I read it about then.
It makes more sense than assigning them Where the Red Fern Grows.
I once wanted to create a rap movie based on Pride and Prejudice, called 'Pride and Prejudizzle'.
Mr. Bingley was called Mr. Blingley.

if kavalier and clay is anything to go by, then not really
even my non-reading friends loved that book; I figured it was one of those books that was just hells of easy to love
i didn't hate it, i just felt no reason to continue reading

if you're in this corner of the internet and you've not heard of, let alone read, Snow Crash, then that's just fucking perplexing

it was pretty awesome for the most part
usually I devour any "fantasy" books I can get my hands on, but jesus that was a chore to finish.
I put it down for about a month when I was halfway through, and honestly thats the least I've ever cared about bothering to finish a book.
definitely glad I picked it back up again
