PS3 Firmware 2.40 -- It's UP gogogo

edited July 2008 in Games and Technology
The patch just went live!
In-Game XMB

* In-Game XMB displays everything that's in the XMB, some functions (playing a video, slideshow, voice chat, etc.) require the you to exit the In Game XMB and use the regular XMB
* Custom Soundtracks for supported games (released games must be patched to support the feature)
* Music player controls for Custom Soundtracks
* Full access to the Friend List/Inbox
* Access to the Accessory Settings
* Ability to launch into a different game while playing a game
* Runs as smooth as the regular XMB
* The old PS button menu (Controller Settings, Shut Off System/Controller) can be accessed by holding the PS button for a couple of seconds instead of tapping the button.

Trophies

* 4 Trophy types: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum
* Bronze trophies are the easiest to get, Silver is harder to get, Gold is the hardest, Platinum is only awarded when you have obtained all the other trophies in a game
* Each user will have a PSN "Profile" that keeps track of your trophies
* Each trophy type has a different value that goes towards your Profile's gamer "level" (Bronze adds less points than Silver, Silver adds less points than Gold, Platinum adds a significant amount of points towards reaching the next gamer level)
* All games will have restrictions on how many trophies they can offer (small scale games will offer less trophies than large scale games) and some games will have restrictions on what type of trophies they can offer (no Platinum Trophies in small scale games)
* Trophies can be viewed in the XMB
* Trophies can be locked by the developer just like Secret Achievements
* Trophies can be compared to friends trophies via the XMB
* Games will need to be patched to support Trophies (SSHD will have a patch hours after 2.4 is released)
* Games will not award Trophies retroactively based on saved data
* First party games confirmed to include Trophy support:
* BUZZ! Quiz TV
* LittleBigPlanet
* MotorStorm Pacific Rift
* NBA 09 - PS3
* PAIN
* PixelJunk Eden
* Resistance 2
* SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
* Warhawk

Misc.

* Google Search added to XMB
* Music player controls added to XMB
* Date & Clock added to XMB

    apparently sshd has also been patched for trophy support, and the team play add-on (?) is available

    interested to see how many existing games are updated to take advantage of stuff like trophies and custom soundtracks

    edit: since the game has its own medal system i'd say it'll be possible for it to grant trophies for medals given before the patch

    Hah, the one time I borrow a PS3 from my friend is when the patch hits. This eliminates one of the main reasons I'm yet to buy a PS3, others being it's downright hideous, the cost and gimped BC.

    I like this firmware update, although it has very very little to offer me, specifically.

    -I can't remember the last time I downloaded an mp3. In-game custom soundtracks mean nothing to me.
    -I don't have a single game that supports trophies. Darkness, R&C: Future, AC, Orange Box, VF5, GTA IV, Oblivion and MGS4. I'm blown away even Ratchet & Clank and MGS don't have trophy support.
    -doing keyword searches while still in-game... is cool. But you can't actually do anything else? That sucks! Internet browsing please.
    -I won't have to exit my game to check a message I just got. Sweet.
    -in-game clock. Great. Now the clock I keep on top of my TV is just a waste of big glowing digital numbers.

    Really, that last one is grasping at straws to find something not-quite-incredible. Yes the update's sweet. Yes, trophies will be cool when they're implemented across the board, but for now I really only have one use for 2.4 - not quitting games when I check a message.

    Still, I <3 Sony. <3<3<3

    Even though it can be argued that alot of this stuff should have been in the system at launch, it's nice to see Sony trying to keep their fans happy.
    And thank god I can set up blu tooth devices now without exiting a game. Maybe now I'll get my headset to actually work before I decide it's to much trouble to bother.

    Not for nothing, but really dude, it just came out. I realize developers may have been privy to this for a while, but still, give them time. I can't imagine Rockstar or Insomniac not slapping some patches on their respective products...although I'm not sure about Kojima.

    Nice, this one crept up on me. Whats ironic is, I'm a tad annoyed about trophies. I'm pretty OCD when it comes to achievements, and the PS3 was always my refuge from them. I guess i can just try and be ignorant. But don't get me wrong, I'm happy its there, obviously people want them.

    EDIT: Its a shame no screen sizing option was added, I have a lot of screen cut off for my ps3. Most games have an option for it, but I'm pretty screwed when i try to watch subtitled DVDs.

    oh sweet, cant wait to install this. I just got my ps3/mgs4 bundle last week and just picked up uncharted yesterday. I totally want to get started on Uncharted right now. But if trophies arent retroactive (except burnout I know) and the patch for Uncharted is the 'forseeable future', should I be playin now or just wait a bit? hmmmmmmmmm o_O

    the clock is a great addition.

    hopefully the couple games i have get soundtrack patches sooner rather than later. im kind of steamed about games needing patches for this, really.

    i keep trying to view my trophy collection, and then it pops up the "There are no trophies." message and it makes me laugh.

    nice patch all around, definitely a step in the right direction.

    ya, I said eff it and decided to start playing just after I wrote that message. I couldnt wait even if it was a wee bit. Awesome little start, man.... graphics are astounding, dont want to get too off topic here, just wow... running in the water and seeing his pants only soak up water part way up his leg and the subtle little animations in the exaggerated looks they give.... my god.

    and I take no credit for that gif, came from neogaf or... somethin.

    Anyone have any problems with the patch? My PS3 has been replaced under warranty and the replacement is well out of warranty. Gizmodo had a feed saying that 2.4 is bricking some PS3s. Should I wait for 2.4.1 if I dont' care about in game xmb at the moment?

    I noted many times with anger that it did not. I am glad they added it.

    But 2.40 broke the power on functionality of popular "hey you know most universal remotes don't use BlueTooth" solution IR2BT.

    Dammit. I was going to order one.

    so far the in game xmb is neat, but without custom soundtracks being universally supported (and with no patches being available at the moment) this update is kind of meh so far. plus ive gotten 2 random lockups so far while scrolling through my Game list in the XMB. never happened to me before today, so i dunno. a mixed bag.

    Do the custom soundtracks support streaming from the PC? That's one thing I really like about using it on the 360.

    Trophies sound interesting - as you can see in my sig, I love the concept of Achievements. Platinum trophies that are awarded only for completing everything else are an interesting way to reward 100% completion. It still comes down to dick-waving for some people, but I feel like they really add something extra to games so it sounds great to me.

    I think all remotes should go bluetooth, or at least RF of some kind. I hate this line of site crap. I love that I can change songs with the ps3 remote from my dining room or kitchen. I can pause a movie when my kid walks infront of the TV/Entertainment system. (GTF out of the way)

    Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
    I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

    I knew this would happen to me, and it is probably the only game that it will happen with for me, but I can't play MGS4 now. The prospect of trophies for this single game are just too great. I am the biggest metal gear * fanboy in the world. I have a foxhound tattoo. I'm bidding on a MGS watch. I have shirts. It's pathetic.

    With the news that some games are retroactive and some aren't and some need a patch and some don't just makes me nervous because I want to do everything there is to do in the game, including getting all the trophies. This isn't a one-shot either. I played through MGS1 multiple times until I had beaten it wearing the tuxedo. I found all the dog tags in MGS2, easy-extreme. I found all kerotans in MGS3 using a guide once. I'm a sad person.

    Now, until either news of how MGS4 works with trophies or whatever, I can't play the game. I have no qualms with deleting all my current saves just to start over so I can get all the others. I am that huge of a fan(boy).

    Any other game I don't give two dicks about. What is wrong with me?
