The Joystiq guys brought up a pretty good point in this week's podcast, which I just listened to
They're talking about how it's kind of impossible to be excited for Nintendo anymore. Unless they pull some sort of magical new IP or feature out of their asses, they'll go kind of under the radar. They started the discussion when Chris Grant pointed out to Justin McElroy how similar Captain Rainbow seemed to Viewtiful Joe when you describe it.
And I have to say, I kind of agree. What can Nintendo announce, a new Zelda game? Maybe. But will I buy it? I don't know. They made a good point when they said they're past a point where they can put Nintendo games in the same category as the 360's and PS3's.
I think this might be the longest post I've ever typed. And that should tell you something.
Nintendo's really going to have to pull something epic out of their asses to get me excited again
though to be honest I think I'm starting to lose interest in gaming in general
Honestly, my interest in the industry has grown as it itself has grown. I've started looking at sites like IGN and Joystiq almost daily, and I plan on paying very close attention to E3.
And, I mean, Justin put it best when he said (And I'm sort of paraphrasing) "Will I buy a new Zelda game? Yeah. But...I know I'm going to go get a boomerang." And it just sort of says stuff about how predictable Nintendo is getting. Honestly, the fact that they're making fat cash off of the same game just churned out over and over is kind of sad, and that may be making them a bit lazy.
Microsoft and Sony are pretty much constantly at each other's necks, and it's good for the industry, because if we have Microsoft and Sony constantly fighting, we can be sure they're putting their best food forward.
I need a good DS game that is just something that I can do on the train for a little while, just a little distraction. I don't want something where I'm driven to finish a story or something.
So far I am thinking:
Layton
Brain Age 1 or 2
FFTA2 even though I have never ever played any final fantasy games
Whatever the latest Advance wars was
what do you dudes recommend from the list or not from the list I don't care just talk to me about games
Well considering most of the big announcements of the year go down there, yes.
i thought they weren't doing that anymore
Downsizing was getting rid of all the hullabaloo like SHIT LOOK AT THE TITS ON THIS BOOTH BABE and having strobe lights and dry ice and basically making it a concert without music.

oh so there's still cool game trailers and an announcements and shit that the rest of us get to hear about second hand then

That was noticeably sarcastic, but yes, that is what there is.
E3 is not as powerful as it once was, and never will be again.

Are there gonna be any places to catch full recaps of conferences? I'd prefer to see the full things instead of catch highlights but some of the ones I want to see most are going to be while I'm at work.

I mean there's going to be the obligatory blog posts about stuff that happens on IGN, Kotaku and Joystiq
but IGN is putting up ads all over the place about how they'll have "live video"

So wait is this some sort of preview of PAX or what?
E3 is not as powerful as it once was, and never will be again.
In no more than three years PAX will be the governing body in gaming media and press
not that this isn't common knowledge anyway, but you can quote me on that.
I see how PAX is the convention where gamers can meet and talk about all this stuff
but I can't see all the news and stuff moving away from E3
I mean no disrespect to PAX but PAX seems to be about us first, while E3 and such is pretty much for the media to announce to us so we can get excited and talk about how big our boners for x project are

It is my opinion that unless Gabe and Tycho take very active steps in preventing this from happening, that it will be very much out of their control.
Shit last year PAX was the first actual instance of Halo 3 being playable ever to the general public
and as far as I'm concerned that's only going to escalate unless very real precautions are taken to prevent exactly this
whether these precautions are warranted (or even wanted) I couldn't say.

That's just Bungie being very active with their community, and like I said, PAX was for the gamers.
E3 is still going to be where all the big announcements are made.
I mean companies aren't just going to show up at PAX with playable builds of all their unannounced games

G4 and IGN are both showing live video I'm pretty sure.
I can catch some of the earlier ones, and I know there will be blog posts and highlight-videos of press conferences all over the place. I would just prefer to get home from work and watch the full conferences I missed before I even glance at any news sites.

More like
um
hang on, let me think about this one
my bad
see this is why i think e3 is irrelevant
you don't need "trade shows" for video games.
all you're going to do is have speeches and show videos
i can view that shit online, thanks
Uh...
Carry on.
