(Quick update. Wurm went gold on 12/12/2012 and now includes all sorts of exciting things. Here are some things that the update changed. You can now have multi-story houses, characters can be customized and armor shows up on your character model. Others things that have changed since you last played... ships have been added, a new artist has been going over everything and making it look much better, new models and animations for many actions in the game, slightly better voices and... 1-20 on skills goes A LOT faster so you don't have to feel worthless. I'll update this a little bit more when I have more time.)

http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/12/wurm-online-1-0-is-officially-official-today/

What is Wurm Online? Good question. Before I answer that I just want to say that this game is addictive and very enjoyable.
In a nutshell, Wurm is a life simulator that takes place in a Fantasy/Medieval setting.
Obviously the game is online and because of that it allows many people to work together to achieve many goals.
To be perfectly honest I don't really know how to explain it properly.

Instead of trying, I formed a list of some of the things that can be done in Wurm:
-Cut down trees, cut trees to logs, turn logs into shafts/planks or many other usefull tools by
combining the use of tools with different materials.

-Mine for many types of materials including stone for masonry or iron ore and other metals
for blacksmithing/weaponsmithing.

-Build a stone or wood house.

-Go hunting for animals to collect meat, body parts for healing covers and leather in order
to use for cooking/alchemy/leatherworking.

-Get killed by animals when trying to collect meat, body par.... yeah.

-Dig holes, build mounds, pave roads or otherwise change the actual terrain of the world.

-Farm for vegetables to be used in cooking, cotton for tailoring and bandages, wemp for
ropes and pumpkins for fighting dummies.

-Cook delightful meals to help stave off hunger so that you can work efficiently without
having to rest between every few steps.

-Give up on cooking because it sucks to level and mooch off of others. (This is a bit harsh.)

-Forage for berries, botonize for all sorts of crap, cut sprouts off of trees to plant your favorite
type near you.

-Fish for food, butcher the fish and anything else that is near you and dead.

-Become a member of a religion and pray to your god. Eventually become a priest if you want
to be gimped and bored to tears. (Not bad for an alt though.)

-Build stone or wood fences, construct gates.

-Build ships and sail the freshwater oceans. (Why is everything freshwater?)

-Experience the joy of time as you watch your prized creations slowly (or in a quick fashion) deteriorate.
There is more that can be done but that would take too much time and I am lazy.

History:

The PA community has had played this game on several occasions and though many have left in the past six years, a few of us keep coming back. Old towns like Arcadia and Arcadia Bay are gone now with the deletion of the old servers and addition of the Freedom Isles.

Currently:

Several of us play now and can be located on most of the servers. No one plays epic.

Thorgot, Tamorlane and Zahrkon are playing on Independence.

Amikron is playing on Deliverance. (The land of dueling banjos..)

Fonjo is playing on Pristine.

All of these servers are connected by way of ship travel except for Pristine which is a brand new server and currently only open to new characters. I am playing on Pristine with some friends from the Minecraft Nations at War community and though we a kind of a small group, we are open to welcoming others to play with or near us. The others are also very nice and accommodating on their respective servers.

Game information:

What does WurmOnline cost to play?
WurmOnline offers FREE (not trial) basic accounts which basically limit how high you can raise skills and stats (capped at 20 out of 99).
Basic account are limited from certain activities that require higher than 20 in certain stats. Here are certain (but not all) activites that
premium players can do that basic players cannot:

Build stone houses (Requires 30 Masonry, Basic Players can still build wooden houses)
Build larger houses (Requires higher Carpentry)
Terraform Roads
Terraform near roads
Break pavement (requires 21 Body Strength)
Steal (Requires 20.50 Body Control)
Attack Other Players (20.5 Body Strength and Soul Strength is required to attack players on the Home server)
Be priests.

Premium player accounts cost EUR$10 (USD$14~15) for either a Two Month Subscription or a One Month Subscription and 5 Silvers
of in-game currency. When your premium time expires you do not lose your skill points, but all skill-related checks are basically
set at 20 if that skill is over 20. Your skills will also slowly decay back towards 20 until you reactivate your account.

Upon death you suffer minor stat losses which can be regained (at lower levels) with very little effort (around 10-20 minutes of working).

Although with a skillcap of 20 you will not be able to craft high quality items, you can still craft items that a premium player can improve
into a high quality item.

New players read this:

The user interface is very simple:
1. You move around with the WASD keys.
2. If you right-click on things a menu will pop up with various actions you can perform.
3. If you press F3 you will see your inventory. F2 brings up your current skill levels.
4. If you double-click on an item in your inventory you select that item (a). Then when you right-click on something else (b) you attempt to use a on (b).

Regarding Items

If a particular item is important to you but you need to leave it somewhere and don't want it taken, label it with your name. Right-Click > Rename. Everyone should follow the honor code that, if you see an item with someone else's name on it, ask them first to borrow it or don't touch it. If an item has no label, it is fair game - you should take it, and you should expect others to take items you make but don't label. This rule also applies to piles of items. If a pile is labeled with someone's name (even if each individual item in the pile isn't), leave that pile alone, as they may be using it for a project or something. On the flip side, if you are making items or piles of items that are free for anyone to take, make sure not to label them so others know they can take them.

Combining Items

Wood scraps stacking up? Stone shards too small? Iron lump need to be a bit bigger? You can combine items in this game buy openening the stack by pressing the little [+] button and clicking one of the items in the stack so that it is in the active bar at the bottom of your inventory. Once that is done, Right-Click the top of the list (the original item text before you expanded it) and choose the combine option. This saves a lot of stress and most new players are completely unaware that this is an option.

Yes and I am fixing the text so that it does not rape some peoples monitors and then I plan on linking to the map,
adding the pictures, adding the directions to get here and then the list LastAndroid linked.

    Woo. Exciting.

That red line on the left heading up the mountain? I went that way. Quite pleasant and scenic, if disorienting when it ends in a dark mineshaft.

walked my way south through the wilderness, it involved a lot of falling and tumbling down steep slopes. At one point I had 30x very light and light injuries, I was worried for a bit that i'd die of a thousand small cuts but they healed up quick

Wurm online is fantastic for exploring, it seems everyone has been somewhere and even in the most inaccessible places you'll occasionally see a forge or the remains of a stone garden wall or a mine entrance where someone struck out for themselves and made their mark.

Okay, I finally finished one of the beds in the barracks now, and so anyone who is on the barracks writ can use it (I think). I am currently using it, but I will not use it again for at least a week so that others can get a turn. Ideally, I'd like to finish up three or four more of them so that the barracks can actually become a useful building again, and so that new people can have a place to stay while they get themselves situated.

So again, bed in the barracks... use it!

    :awesome:

And I'll help with the newbie rush assuming it's outside work o'clock. Frankly I think the clusterfuck of a village we have now is great; it fits nicely with the pirate port. Should've called the place Tortuga.

Well, there might not be a newbie rush if people don't start signing up. Come on lurkers, if you're reading this, just join up. It's a great game!

Also, I'm thinking maybe we should push the run to Arcadia Bay back to Saturday afternoon or evening. This gives a chance for people to start off who would normally be at work during the week, and it gives a little extra time for more people to sign up. Just my opinion.

In terms of the writs for the barracks and mine, I'm not entirely sure who has them now. Last I remember it was still Zahrkon and Thorgot, but they're back up at Mt. Awesome now. Momarr maybe? Or LastAndroid?

By the way, if we make the newbie run on Saturday at around 5:00 PM Eastern (which I think is around 10:00 PM GMT), I can have an alt ready at NewTown to assist the new players in getting to Arcadia Bay. It would help if they've already done the newbie quests by then and are ready to make the journey.

In whatever case, I'll have an alt in Newtown around that time on Saturday, and I'll hang around for around 30 Minutes to make sure everyone who wants to go is there. If anyone wants to go with me, I'll be heading back at 5:30 PM Eastern. We will have many adventures along the way, and there will be many bears and scorpions. It will be grand!

    Name's Arkim.

A writ is like a personal deed. There is a writ for each individual building and it can be managed by those who possess them. By being on a writ you gain permissions to use stuff inside the building or take things, as long as they are not belonging to someone else who has put their name on it.

The deed for the town is a completely different beast. It covers a area based on its size and it allows a specific number of people to be "official" citizens. Citizens do respawn at the token and non-citizens do not.

Currently the town deed is filled up right now but I am sure it will be fairly liquid at some point in the future based on player activity.

The deed can also be upgraded to hold more citizens if people really want to spend the cash.

Really though, the island is pretty safe and as long as a person does not do something really foolish, they won't have to worry about dying.
