Update 9/26:
Kotaku is reporting Banjo-Kazooie will hit XBLA on Nov. 26 for 1200 points ($15). You'll still get a free download code for BK if you preorder BK Nuts & Bolts, which is only $40. And Banjo Tooie is slated for an early 2009 release.

Update 8/19:
Holy crap. From Joystiq:
We pretty much crammed the need-to-know right up there in the headline, but here it is again: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts pre-orders (confirmed: the game's only $40) will include free download codes for the original Banjo-Kazooie on Xbox Live Arcade at "participating" retailers (read: not the little game store up the block). The code will apparently be redeemable on Nuts & Bolts' launch day, giving players a "two-week head start" on the XBLA game, which won't be released to the masses until a couple weeks later.
I was just going to buy the XBLA title (which I was going to guess at $10 to $15 anyway), but now I'll probably just buy the actual game. Here's to preordering for the first time in years. I'm also pretty sure this is the first time I've seen a timed exclusive on a video game solely for people who preordered ... not sure I'm all that keen on the idea, but the sheer bargain-osity is too much for me to bear.

From mid-July:
So this was apparently announced at the MS conference and I completely missed it until now...?

The hardest secret CVG has ever had to keep is finally out in the open: Rare's original N64 Banjo-Kazooie is coming to Xbox Live Arcade in its entirety, Nintendo logos and all!
We travelled to Microsoft last week to see the XBLA version in action, which is being ported externally by a third-party developer.
Visually it's benefited massively from a boost in resolution, and Banjo's model seems to have been touched up in-game as well.
Essentially, Banjo is untouched from the 1998 N64 original. Boot it up, and Mumbo plays away on a big, Nintendo-branded xylophone. Skip to the menus and Banjo will even have a go on his Gameboy. We've no idea how this is legally allowed to happen but we're glad it is.
Achievements and leaderboards are a mandatory addition to the Xbox Live Arcade version, but in our chat Rare hinted that the infamous 'Stop 'n Swap' feature vetoed from the N64 version could make a come back. "We can't say anything", they told us when quizzed on the feature.
Rare's hoping to get Banjo XBLA out before the release of Nuts 'n Bolts, which still has as a temporary release date at the end of the year. More soon.
Pair this with the
IGN writeup:
Many will remember that the first Banjo-Kazooie game promised to interact with Banjo-Tooie. That didn't pan out, but that feature will finally be realized on Xbox 360. By finding specific items in Banjo-Kazooie on Xbox Live Arcade, you will be able to unlock things in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts.
And I think this Stop 'n Swap thing is a lock. Now, I'm not really all that interested in Nuts and Bolts, but I never got the chance to play the original game and I'm curious to try it out. Additionally, this is fascinating that an N64 game with Nintendo logos and all is being placed on the Live Arcade. I've seen people wonder about where Rare's games can land (lest we forget all of the Goldeneye XBLA shenanigans), but this is a pretty good tip of the hat to where they might end up.

When your savefile is complete, it's over. There's no point going back in levels. You can't even fight the last boss anymore. In Super Mario 64, you could choose a star and redo it as much as you wanted, you could battle Bowser again, etc, but BK was a very straightforward path. Want to beat Gruntilda's ass again? Redo the whole game.
I love the original BK. Must have played through and 100%ed it countless times on the '64.
Wonder what the 'chievements will be?
Gonna be humming that music for months.
I was about to sell my BK game till I read this. This worries me.
Wha?
So you never saw (minor end spoiler)
Because that bit was awesome.
By the way, I don't think a third party developer can fuck up an N64 port. :P
Pretty much all ports on XBLA are handled by third parties. It's just a port, I wouldn't worry overmuch about it. What could they fuck up?
The incredible level design, colorful worlds, hilarious humor, and strong difficulty (relatively speaking) make it a must-play. I think Click Clock Wood is the best 3D platforming level ever designed.

Dude, yes. That game is soooo awesome. Gourmet Submarine! Magical Music Stage! Giant Robot Rollerskating Boss Battles!
God I love that game.
The music... The characters... That giant robot theme song. Probably my top 5 favorite games of all time, but for some reason I didn't own it.
I'm in this camp; I missed the N64 entirely outside of Mario 64 at launch, so I didn't really get to play anything from the library. I didn't realize until a few years ago that so many people held BK in high-regard; I had always assumed it was a me-too M64 clone.
I was excited about BK Nuts and Bolts until I saw the big vehicular emphasis; now I'll just content myself with buying this instead, so it saves me $50 (or however much this ends up costing, I'm assuming $10).
Let me put it this way, I have never been able to work out whether I prefer Zelda 64, Mario 64, Banjo Kazzoie or Goldeneye as my favourite N64 game.
I mean Mario and Zelda changed everything, and were utterly amazing, but I honestly think I enjoyed BK more.
I think it's held in the highest regard as far as N64 games go, right up there with Mario 64, Zelda, and Goldeneye. I still think B-K had the prettiest N64 graphics, and it was made right in the middle of the life-cycle. And the overworld... oh man. It's like one big level in itself. It's not at all like Mario 64, really... once you play it, you'll understand. And if MS is touching up the resolution and graphics a bit, it'll look even better!
I think I still respect Zelda a bit more because of what it did for the industry, and it really is one of the best games ever made. But B-K sure is close.

BT too, but for different reasons. However the multiplayer in that game is a hoot.

MS owns Rare.
Rare bought back all of the non Nintendo characters. This is why there was a PD0 and a Conker Live and Reloaded.
And?
I don't think this thread is for you.
This. I really just want to be able to shoot my friends with eggs from the mouth of my bird companion online. Is that too much to ask?
Yeah, both companies agreeing to put the game on both systems is the only way I can see this working.
Why would Nintendo want their name in an Xbox game?
Is that clearing anything up for you?
Seriously. How hard is this to understand?
Rare (ie Microsoft) owns the rights to PD, GFJ, Blast Corps, KI, Conker, and Banjo, plus anything they had the rights to back in the day outright. They don't have to do anything to Nintendo to republish these games.
Seriously, get off the fence dude, it looks fantastic. Go read all the E3 impressions, watch the videos etc. If your doubt sits with the vehicle stuff, this video can't be quoted enough.

Back when you finished the original Banjo-Kazooie with 100% items, you were shown a special ending that has Banjo going up to permanently locked doors in B-K, and opening them and getting some special item (there was the famous "ice key" and two egg items). You could see these areas when playing the game, bu you didn't have access to them. The intent was that, after its sequel Banjo-Tooie came out, you could go back into B-K with special items collected in B-T which would let you access these areas. Then, you'd get the items in B-K and use them in B-T. In order to achieve this, Rare was going to have you swap the game cartridges out in a certain way.
It never ended up happening for whatever reason (Rare has never issued a formal statement why). So, the items in B-K are permanently locked. People with gamesharks were able to get access to it, but they don't do anything, and they kind of mess your cartridge up from what I understand.

Steam ID : rwb36, Twitter : Werezompire,
I'm pretty sure both Nintendo AND movie licensing issues killed the port.
I'm a very new 360 owner, so I don't know for sure, but isn't it usually the case that ports of older games get a "classic" version and an "HD" version with new gameplay modes and updated graphics? Or is that just for a select few games in XBLA's library?

I mean, the N64 appears in a screenshot of Nuts and Bolts.
