I still own JFG and an N64.

I will happily buy it again if it comes to VC. It's one of only two or three games I have that I would do that for.

Can someone explain this whole stop and swap thing?

Back when you finished the original Banjo-Kazooie with 100% items, you were shown a special ending that has Banjo going up to permanently locked doors in B-K, and opening them and getting some special item (there was the famous "ice key" and two egg items). You could see these areas when playing the game, bu you didn't have access to them. The intent was that, after its sequel Banjo-Tooie came out, you could go back into B-K with special items collected in B-T which would let you access these areas. Then, you'd get the items in B-K and use them in B-T. In order to achieve this, Rare was going to have you swap the game cartridges out in a certain way.

It never ended up happening for whatever reason (Rare has never issued a formal statement why). So, the items in B-K are permanently locked. People with gamesharks were able to get access to it, but they don't do anything, and they kind of mess your cartridge up from what I understand.

You can actually get the Ice Key and the eggs in Banjo Kazooie without a gameshark. If you enter certain cheat codes into the sandcastle floor, the spire rise out of the ocean at the beach, the wall of ice blocking you from the Ice Key melts, and the door in the desert opens up. I don't remember the codes off-hand but I'm sure you can google them up real quick. Presumably the idea was that BT would give you the codes to go and enter into BK, then you'd switch the cartridges out rapidly so that BT could tell that you collected the items. It doesn't mess up your game at all, all it does is add another menu to the pause screen called Stop-N-Swop where the items are displayed.

As I understand it, Stop-N-Swop was supposed to be something like you'd turn the console off and rapidly switch out the cartridges, and the N64's temporary memory or something would retain the fact that you collected the SnS items, and for whatever reason newer models of the N64 were unable to do that, so they scrapped the idea and shoehorned the items into BT.

Also, I am so fucking excited for this. My mom made me give away my N64 before I was allowed to get a GameCube, so I haven't gotten to play the Banjo games in years, but they were always some of my favorites. Now I can only hope that BT isn't too far behind. Well, assuming that they fix that Marie Canarie bullshit.

For those that haven't played them, the Banjo games aren't so much Mario knock-offs as they are a refinement of what Mario 64 first introduced.

I'm worried about them reactivating Stop n' Swap. Banjo-Kazooie was a perfect game. Polishing the graphics is fine, but adding any content concerns me. If anything, they should probably just remove everything in the original game related to Stop n' Swap.

But maybe whatever they do will work just fine, or be easy to ignore.

If that's the case, this is going to kick so much ass.

If memory serves from my reading into this whole thing, the Stop 'n Swap could be potentially risky. An N64 it was tested on refused to boot up for..I want to say half an hour or something like that. Presumably until the RAM no longer had enough juice to hold the data.

But weird shit happens when you mess with this sorta stuff. I once read a thing where a guy had lifted his zelda cart slightly while it was in a gameshark, and when he later booted the game up minus the gameshark, the codes were still in effect.

Now, that story could be complete bullshit, but the point remains. It could damage the game or the console, and it was dropped. There's all sorts of things like this hidden in the games, such as Bottles' Revenge.

I'd imagine that they'll just have to remove references to Nintendo products. So instead of a GameBoy Banjo will be messing with a Zune or something one the load screen.

its already been stated that all Nintendo references are intact:
Essentially, Banjo is untouched from the 1998 N64 original. Boot it up, and Mumbo plays away on a big, Nintendo-branded xylophone. Skip to the menus and Banjo will even have a go on his Gameboy.

more importantly, if this is allowed, does it give us more hope for GoldenEye on XBLA? is this the first step towards something bigger, or does Sony have to sign off on it(since they completely own the Bond license now)?

at the very least from the mention of their name and use of the corporate logo, yes, they've got to be getting something. lets face it, Nintendo aren't exactly in the habit of throwing money away(even if they can afford too).

No no, it's confirmed! The Stop 'n Swop items unlock stuff in BK: Nuts and Bolts. After all this waiting, we'll finally get to see what the fuck Mumbo was teasing us with!

So, were we ever given a timeframe for when this'll be released?

Man oh man! I love Banjo-Kazooie! I still have a Mumbo Jumbo plush from the games release (Though it might have been Tooie...).

It was the first game besides Mario 64 that I 100%-ed.

I can't wait to play through again. Our N64 has gone to crap. The controllers are dead and it's just not as fun with the blur now. I trust this version will get a good treatment.

    What I want:
    Better framerate
Widescreen mode (If it's being ported, I can't see why they can't go this extra few inches.)

What I wish but won't get:
The Conker: Live and Reloaded treatment. i.e. better higher polygon count models and textures

    But I'll take what comes.

Can't wait to play with Achievements! I can't wait to see what crazy ones they think of. I'm anticipating this a hundred times more than Threeie!

Click-Clock Wood was the greatest level ever. Playing each season in the same level but with new ways was amazing back then. Still is.

I hope this also means that we'll get Tooie. I never 100%-ed it. But for achievements and a better controller I would make an exception. (Though I'm still waiting and hoping for DOOM II to be ported too, but I haven't seen that happen yet. Damn you, id.. or whoever ported the first!)

Yeah Click-Clock Wood is pure gold, the seasonal changes to the graphics, music, characters and puzzles are so much fun to discover.

Mad Monster Mansion too, that one was great, climbing to the top of the church and staring down at the whole level felt pretty epic at the time.

I tried playing BK again a while back, but the '64 connected to my HD LCD just looks like shit from a butt, so hopefully this Arcade release will look cleaner.

Then MSoft and Nintendo had a fight about profit cuts and it was shelved.

It shows that you don't know what you're talking about, because BK is thankfully nothing like Mario Sunshine. I hate 3D Mario games but love BK. Can't wait for Nuts & Bolts. This series is magical in a way that very few other game series are.
I still think B-K had the prettiest N64 graphics, and it was made right in the middle of the life-cycle. And the overworld... oh man. It's like one big level in itself. It's not at all like Mario 64, really... once you play it, you'll understand. And if MS is touching up the resolution and graphics a bit, it'll look even better!
Rare repeated itself on the N64 with what they did for the SNES, i.e. their platformers (Banjo-Tooie, Donkey Kong 64 and Conker) were the absolute prettiest games on the system. Just like the Donkey Kong Country games were the best looking ones on the Super NES. And now BK3 looks gorgeous again as well. Amazing eyecandy.

Also, am I the only one who was freaked out more by the water in Rusty Bucket Bay than in Treasure Trove Cove? It took me forever to get the courage to dive down and get the Jiggy at the bottom of the bay. On the other hand I spent like 2 hours trying different methods for killing the shark.

I think the general idea between Stop n Swop was that you wouldn't need any external things (ie controller pak)

I think they found beta Controller Pak writing code in the game, but they have no idea what it did.

Doing a 'fake' Stop n Swop in BK -> N&B is certainly possible - it's the same reason the other retro games have achievements. You have the emulator check for certain things, and if condition is met, write something/hand out an achievement. Then N&B checks the file or your achievements, and unlocks things in itself appropriately.

It isn't really Stop 'n Swop that way though. That involves hotswapping cartridges and stuff. But this is the next best thing I suppose.

Also I seem to recall already doing shit with the Ice Key and the other SnS items in Banjo-Tooie... My memory of that is blurry though, but I always thought they already solved the whole SnS dilemma in BT through other means.
