Gamersyde has a very cool video diary with the developers of Bionic Commando Rearmed you can find here. It's the first of allegedly a few behind-the-scenes videos, and it's neat; the creative director seems to genuinely love the original and keys in to what people liked about it (the flashy cheesy '80s feel, the arm) and what could be changed (all new boss designs).

The only way it could be better would be a DDR mat compatible mode. It's a really well thought out, pretty, fun game. And I love watching Slim dance.

I like. It's nice and difficult (at least in coop). And the coop specific attacks are really cool.

Can you actually successful outrun the big plane at the end of the first level of 1942 or do you just keep running and just see how long you can last?

During my last coop game my friend survived to the end, at which point the large plane overtook him anyway. We weren't sure if it killed him or what. Cool idea, still not sure what the point of it is, though.

I was hoping that if you kept outrunning him he'd eventually destroy himself by smashing through all his own planes and taking so much damage making the win all the sweeter.

It's basically like Zuma. It seems to really emphasize making combos, though. I try to get as many two-in-a -rows as possible, then make one three-in-a-row that snaps all of the others together. You can practice doing that really easily if you play the first level with Hydro on easy.

I'm not sure how exactly the mechanics work, but I think your opponent is also playing on his side (or at least, the game simulates that there's an opponent playing) and when he does combos on his side it'll send more beatniks on your grid. So if you don't clear them fast enough there's always going to be more beatniks showing up. Or maybe it's just a matter of failing the beat sections adding more beatniks as a penalty. I only played the demo for a few rounds so I'm not sure.

1942 is one of the few games coming out that DOES have online co-op, and it's one of the best parts of the game.

1up has a short article about Bionic Command Rearmed. One interesting thing that I never noticed in other articles was that it has a 4-player versus mode. I imagine it's still local multiplayer only, though.

edit: I guess it's old news, found a 1up article from April about it.

If you get really sucked into it and do all the sidequests (and you will), you'll be playing this sucker for 40 hours bare minimum.

    Anyway, what's out this week?

I've been replaying the original Geo Wars to get back into that twin-stick frenzy state of mind, and I realize that while I always get so close to the "10x multiplier" achievement, I will never on God's green earth be able to survive to 1 million points on one life. I almost always blow it around the 300,000 mark; I managed to score the survive to 500k once, but that was it. I'm most excited for the Deadline and Sequence timed modes—three minutes, I think? Pac-Man CE is astounding because of its timed nature, and I think the competition for Deadline is going to be even more fierce.

And I wonder if this is going to break the records for biggest opening for an XBLA title. Everyone and their mom has played this game, and I think it's going to get mega-huge play on the blade ads.

Hell yes! MS just released full details on the Xbox Summer of Arcade (those fuckers stole my thread title!) here with all details.

    Geo Wars 2: July 30
    Braid: Aug. 6
    Bionic Commando Rearmed: Aug. 13
    Galaga Legions: Aug. 20
    Castle Crashers: Aug. 27

Additionally, they're running a sweepstakes where you enter by playing the featured game the week it comes out.
    Prize Information
After the sweepstakes is over, five winners will be selected (one for each Prize Period).

-Five Weekly Prizes: 4000 Microsoft Points
After the five Prize Period drawings, one Grand Prize winner and two Second Place winners will be chosen at random from all eligible entries.

    -One Grand Prize Package:
    100,000 Microsoft Points
    Xbox 360 Elite console
Xbox LIVE 12-month Gold subscription card

    -Two Second Prize Package:
    10,000 Microsoft Points
Xbox LIVE 12-month Gold subscription card

And I know I'm going to likely be buying and playing all of these games, so what better prize for playing XBLA games than ... the chance to buy more XBLA games!

Seriously, I wouldn't know what to do with that many points. I might actually buy a music video or two!

This lineup reminds me of the Rolling Thunder of last fall's retail lineup, although this is week after week of critical darlings and blockbuster hits.

My only beef with the prizes:

In order to be in the contest, you have to play 360 games. So that means I already have a 360.

Now obviously I wouldn't turn down a free one if someone offered. But why give as a prize the thing you know they already have?

So you have a backup when yours dies, lulz.

Well, It probably costs MS next to nothing to do, and seeing as how most of the 360 sales are Premiums, you'd figure only a slim minority of people will be actual Elite owners. Getting a free upgrade is kind of cool, plus the winner will likely either sell or give away their original console, opening up another person who might buy games.

Woohoo for official release dates! I'd like to pick up all of these games (unless the demos convince me otherwise), but for now I think it'll be Geo Wars 2 this week, Galaga Legions in a few weeks, and then pick up the rest in September (going to get a really big paycheck then).

It's worth noting that even playing the trial version of each game enters you into the sweepstakes. Oh and I just ran the calculation. That's $1250 worth of Microsoft points for the Grand prize, in addition to an Elite console (worth about $400) and a year of gold ($50). Holy cow, that would be sweet to win.

I'm pretty sure the transfer kit is free through the Xbox website; at least, I've heard enough people reference it to think it's not just an elaborate ploy. :) And I'd love an Elite, if only because my Core is still working fine but just worries me due to age.

Looking over the list, the only game I might pass on right now is Bionic Commando, if ony because five weeks in a row of new games is just crazy overkill. I'll still try the demo and I'm sure I'll like it, but I might pass just to avoid gaming ADD and not giving the other games their justly deserved attention.
