The fact that you're in a building crammed full of thousands and thousands of gamers from all over the world (mostly WA probably though.) And getting to meet some of them through waiting in lines and Pictochat!

    And oh, Khoo... <3

Yeah, shaking Khoo's hand was magical on that first day.

But I think the environment really makes PAX a special convention.

I genuinely did enjoy the whole ball event. People getting together to achieve a goal (what was the goal again?) in a big event like this is pretty fun.

Mostly I just liked being among like-minded people for a few days. Even if they did stink.

It's the people. Find the people that don't smell, find the people that don't mumble, and just be like "Hey let's grab lunch." I chatted with ArenaNet employees before the first concert and Microsoft interns at lunch on Saturday. Sunday morning was spenting playing D&D and swapping Rome: Total War stories with just random guys.

I can play console games at home. I don't need to hit all the panels, especially now that I've seen them once. But how often are you going to meet gamers; it's not like there are gamer hangouts.

I loved the Red vs Blue guys. Since I was wearing my OU hat, and they were from Austin, TX, we struck up a conversation immediately with NCAA Football news.

Also, playing multiplayer games like Smash Bros with people I've never met before.

The Minibosses and hanging with the Flying Lab Software folks at their booth, but I have to ask.. Was it just me or does the majority of PAX not know how to get into a concert? I kept looking around during MC Frontalot and the Minibosses and with the rare exception I mostly saw head nodding, a little swaying, and some fists/horns thrown in the air. There were even some people standing still like statues. It was creepy.

    In order:

ALL HAIL BALL. ALL HAIL BALL. BALL IS KING. I was the guy who suggested they auction it for Child's Play in the first Q&A panel.

Both concerts. Ignoring leg pain to enjoy music at its fullest potential FTW.

Guitar Hero Motherfucking two. War pigs is trapped in my head for the next week. Tycho smashing the guitar FTW.

The PA Panels. I'm a connoisseur of stand-up comedey, and both of the panels were funnier than anything I've ever seen in my life. The best part was that I used the word 'cockthirsty' while waiting in line for the panel. I forget the conversation. Also, hearing the words 'Rain-slick Precipice of Darkness', and then hearing it had Lovecraftian themes.

The lines. I actually love waiting in line for things at PAX, it's the best way to make new friends. However, my friend and I were the FIRST PEOPLE in line for the non-wristband line for concert B, and by the time the door opened there were 20 people wthout wristbands in front of us. The cutting was insane, but usually it didn't really matter if you were 20 people behind.

Bawls, Bawls, Bawls. While they lasted.

And as a media agent, it's kinda disappointing to see it from the frontal aspect. I saw one dude just zoning out on the obnoxiously overused strobelight, and I almost wanted to splash him with some water. If you're just going to stand there and block the view of people who want to enjoy it, stand at the back. I thoroughly enjoyed myself at the side of the stage in the small little media area, rocking out to a solid level during both concerts.

I really enjoyed the PC freeplay room, the bemani machines, the panels, the bean bag chairs, playing hungry hungry hippos at 2 in the morning on sunday, getting third in line for console freeplay, getting the only PS2 and playing Amplitude. The ball was awesome at the time but in hindsight kind of dumb.

The concerts were okay. I wasn't feeling them that much because it was basically the same as last year, but with less groups. Video Game Pianist is pretty cool. Optimus Rhyme is good, probably my favorite act. NESkimos were way too fucking loud and the distortion made it sound like ass, plus they didn't even have a drummer. I'm not an MC Frontalot fan much at all. His beats seem awkward for hip hop and I don't feel his lyrical style. Minibosses are good, but it seems like they play the exact same set every year.

The Final Omegathon round was very unclimactic. People waited in line for hours for what lasted all of two minutes. Gabe and Tycho could of least played each other or something. Nothing against Tetris, but next year you should pick a game where the players actually interact with each other.

There were just too many goddamn people this year.

Note: I haven't slept much over 2 hours since Thurday Night, and that might've had an influence on this post.

Yeah, I let the experience drag me back about six years to when I was a huge head banger. The evidence of this act is the fact that my neck will ache for days to come.

I think next year I'm going to bring a cattle prod for the folks I see just standing around, because I'll be as close to the front as I can get and if you're not moving when you're that close you need to be zapped with a cattle prod.

Sounds like a fucking brilliant plan. Sorry a lot of people don't enjoy thrashing around like a retard and would rather stand and enjoy the music.

I'm a white guy. I can't dance. If I had a few drinks in me, I'd thrash around like a retard, but that's cause that's what you do in times like that. But I didn't even attend the concerts this year, I was too busy at a party on Friday and drinking with Leroy on Sat.

I loved chillin within the wireless lounge, chattin in picto with many of ya'll... PAX Girl, and Ji Eun: I saw both of you in frequently enough to remember your names, which is cool.

bustin' out some doubles DDR once or twice a night to remember my good ol' days.

Waiting in line and talking with people, making lots of new friends...

Going 45 hours without food or sleep by Saturday morning, and still competing in tournaments over the weekend (got my ass handed to me constantly, needless to say.)

Most of all, I just loved being there. I honestly didn't do much the entire time, and am kinda sad about it... but I still feel really great that I was there. Being in the environment, was just... renewing. My geekhood has been secured, and I will continue to drive 40 minutes to PAX every year.

On a side note, I did feel good looking awkward every day.

First day I was wearing a suit/tie (lost the jacket quick, it was too damn hot.) and the second day I just tried to dress as flamboyant as I could; beanie hat w/ bill, and a white button-up with blue flowers all over it.

I hope to continue to look like a moron year after year.

I love all of you guys, keep commuting to WA.

Seeing people I knew from the forums, but didn't know from the forums within the first 10 minutes. Meeting new folks was pretty rockin in the long ass lines. That, and seeing Jerry and Mike just standing around without people realizing who they are, until the moment struck, and people started a line near their presence, heh.

Favorite moment was after PAX though, drunken friday nights ftw.

    Oh, also:

Another favorite was on Saturday night, I put my badge/lanyard underneath my button-up to prevent it from flying everywhere, and after an hour or so of it being down there, I retrieved it from beneath my +2 Shirt of Flamboyance, lo and behold, there were two lanyards with a 3-day pass on each of them.

Somehow, in my sleep/food deprived stupor, I put on a pass that was PROBABLY left on one of the tables out on the 4th floor balcony.

So, whoever's weekend/summer I completely ruined, I'm sorry. Although you DID leave it there, we all make mistakes.

I was just weirded out because I thought I suddenly gained some magical cloning power or something.

anybody else have weird shit happen to them in the midst of a sleep-starving drunken stupor?

    Cool:

    *ALL HAIL THE BALL!
*Basically all of Guitar Hero 2 before Concert B. The crash sucked, yes, but it's one of those "you had to be there moments", like the guitar smash that followed about 4 minutes later. Oh, and the Minibosses vs. Frontalot shellacking on "War Pigs" was also cool.
*Swag from the Exhibition Hall. 5 mousepads (thanks Wizards), 4 t-shirts (Precipice, Messiah, Nvidia and Pirates), 3 game CDs, 2 starter sets for Magic: The Gathering and a broken Nvidia bag in a pear tree (ok, so it doesn't quite have the same ring).
*Playing NWN2 and seeing most of my major concerns being addressed.
*Cheering at people who didn't make it to the Nvidia raffle when their numbers were called.
*Seeing the Minibosses rock the fuck out. Would have been cooler if I wasn't totally tone-deaf, because I didn't recognize any of their songs that weren't for download from their webpage.

    Not Cool:

*The lines (I know people have said that they use the lines to meet people, the only problem is that I totally suck at conversations)
*Hearing my friend bitch about the lines
*Having my legs cramp up from spending too much time standing up in lines
*Spending maybe a little over an hour in the BYOC total.
*PC games I play that there were servers for: 0
*PC games I absolutely hate that there were servers for: 2
*Bawls running out late Saturday. WTF?
*Having everything start late (especially last Omegathon round)
*The concert schedule. Is there some sort of law I'm unaware of that states that metal NES cover bands have to play behind nerdcore rappers? I can't be the only one who thinks this makes no sense.
*The lines (it warrants mentioning again)

Started off not cool but ended up cool:

*The line for the first PA panel. My group were basically the first ones there, but then people started to glob around us, essentially cutting en massé. It would have been cool if it stopped there, but then the Enforcers said the line was moving outside. Still would've been OK had they simply pushed the line back, but instead they made everyone who was inside go to the back. WTF? The only redemption came when about 20 minutes into the panel a group of 4 left, so we took their spots, and those chairs happened to have the cards for the Precipice t-shirts.

Is it PAX <insert nearest future PAX here> yet?

I came up to the autograph table with the side panel of my Lian-Li case, hoping for a couple small autographs in the corner. On a scale of one to you-know-what, my computer was given a violent shove into Awesome territory when Gabe scrawled Charles all over it.
