SO! Its my turn to run a contest for a change :P Im going to get right to the point on this.

THE PRIZE!:

1 BYOC pass to pax
Plus
ONE 3 DAY PAX PASS!
Plus
My secondary personal gaming PC to use for the event
(no you are not wining the pc, just the use of it for pax)

Its specs are:
2.56ghz 45nm core2duo @ 3ghz
Radeon 3870 (with a decent overclock)
4gb of ram
2x 250gb hard drives (I already have a ton of games installed on it)
SP35P2 Pro shuttle
Vista
Some spare logitech keyboard and mouse

Dell 2407wfp 24" LCD

RULESZ!:

I want pictures of the crappiest computer & workspace… ever.
Just reply with a pic of the following, plus maybe a little blurb on how awesome BYOC is and how much you want to go :).
Espically if you have never been to a LAN party before, this is your chance.

This has to be your *main* computer that you use every day at home.
[strike]1) You *MUST* be pre-reged to go to PAX 2008 this year.[/strike]
    1) Thanks to a donation a 3 day PAX pass is now included! The only requirement here now is that you have to be committed to going to PAX
      2) Your computer must be displaying this thread on the forums in the pic
      3) Write your handle and something like ZOMG I WANT TO GO TO PAX BYOC on a piece of paper, the paper has to be in the pic as well. Bonus points for l33t sp34k :P.
      4) Post the specs of your computer with the picture (cpu speed, cpu type, ram speed, ram amount, motherboard type, videocard, hard drive size, etc)

If you guys don’t know what your PC is runing, go install everest and you can acquire the info from there.
    http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=3&ps=UE&lang=en

    Judging criteria!:

I got a number of questions on how this will be judged. Heres what will be taken into consideration.

    40% system specs
    30% bad setup/desk condition
20% sob story/blurb on how much one wants to win
    10% l33t sp34k

You guys can edit your posts up until the closing date of the contest.

Current BYOC attendees cant enter, sorry guys :P trying to go for new people who otherwise wouldn’t have gone to BYOC this year due to bad computer.

The person with the lamest computer and workspace will win. The judges will be me. Plus Moe, MaoChan, and Tr0tsky. (I might call forth some enforcers if a tiebreaker is needed)

I've used this system at a lan party before, it's very nice. It runs pretty much every game at 1920x1200 at high quality settings.

I'd win this if i had a camera. My keyboard is an AST piece of crap from the 80's. Speaker is only 1 big crappy Labtec one. My mouse is a ball mouse. My monitor is bigger than my tv.My computer is too old to do anything. My desk is homemade from chairs and a piece of cardboard to hold the keyboard and mouse and i cut a hole in the cardboard to place my rockband mic in there so i can use ventrilo. My comp cant run WC3 at full graphics.. And... It was all free from a friend who just bought a nice computer. But im too poor to afford a camera for the WIN...

      HD size: 68.5 GB

If you want more pictures i can take some more.

      EDIT:
I should probably read the entire OP before i post, i didn't know i needed a blurb.

      BLURB:
      I want to PC game.
I REALLY want to PC game.

PC Gaming to me is much much easier and is more robust than Console gaming.
The games on PC are more hardcore than console games as well as the indie games more creative. They have WAY better and more easy to access communities, in fact ALL the gamer communities are only accessible on the PC. And the convenience of everything i have on my computer outside of gaming (Music, movies, INTERNET BROWSER, and all useful programs i use) is worth the high price for PC parts.

I wanted to make my first PC this summer, and I basically learned everything about computer parts by looking online. Scoped out how-to videos, hit up wikipedia, and went to different forums for information i needed to learn about to make a new PC. I had my plan. One forum had people who would basically suggest different builds given your budget range. I would ask them for a build according to my budget and i wanted dearly to got to the PAX with my own PC and BYOC ticket. All i needed was the money.

I'm a 16 year old looking for my first job, my first summer job. I tried to save up for a PC this summer, but job hunting was a bitch. Almost nothing fit inside my schedule of summer school, band practice, band camp, and most importantly PAX. I applied to a couple of places, but none came through, at least none that fit my schedule.

Well, i have my PAX badge. On Aug 29th My brother, friend, and i are driving to the Bremerton ferry terminal and heading up. If anything I'll be waiting in line to get rent PC for an hour. But, my plans of using my own PC to bring to the PAX BYOC didn't go through, but maybe this will.

      EDIT2:

      I've just checked and i can't run instantaction.com

      EDIT3:

      MORE SAP!!

Regarding the inclusion of 3day pass:

If i win this contest i can safely say that the 3-day pass will go to a friend who wanted to go to PAX, but unfortunately he could not get enough money in time for the August 1st deadline. For you see he recently got back from a Trip basically around the world. He went on a very extensive summer vacation with his family going to The Philippines, Philadelphia, and San Diego and needed to concentrate his money on that. He does have the time to go to PAX, and i would like to have him come along with me and my bro.

I'll get updated pictures tommorow, somebody is borrowing my camera. Actually, I'll go one step further and have video proof.

      Specs:

      1GHz AMD Duron
128MB of RAM (previously 384, but muh sticks keep dying), don't know the clock speed
      SiS onboard video
      SiS onboard everything else
      60GB HDD

      Story:

Back in 2003, I bought my own computer. I had a job for a while and finally decided to upgrade from a 233Mhz P2 32MB of RAM Packard Bell that my parents had bought for $1200. So I bought a computer/case from a discount computer dealer and Windows XP (200$! It felt awesome to finally pay for my own computer's OS). It was decent for the time. I eventually put in a GeForce MMX 440 so I could play C&C Renegade at a better framerate, and then..

I was recording some Halo movies in December 2004 for our Halo clan. So I get everyone into a party, and my capture card comes unseated. Oh, shit. I reseat it and attempt to reboot. Nothing. The computer just refused to boot up.

For the next 6 months, my computer time was solely on my roommate's laptop. It had shit for graphics and nothing else to write home about, and since it was crap my gaming was mostly Halo 2 / Xbox/ Gamecube.

Then our neighbor got tired of her computer, an HP from 1999. I fixed it up a bit and turned it into my own new computer. It came with Windows 98 on it, but I installed my XP copy on it and it worked fine. But for some reason, the video card died, and I was back to square one.

Then our OTHER neighbor got tired of her computer. It was basically the same computer (tower design), an HP from 2000. I put the HDD from the previews HP into that one, and all was well.

And then that one fucking died.

Fast forward to today. I eventually pulled the first computer that died out of the basement, took it out of it's case and somehow resurrected it (figured out it has a cooling problem with the CPU fan). Tried to put the mobo in one of the computer cases but the power supply was too big for the case and the CPU fan prevented the whole assembly from being able to close. So I took the part of the case that held the mobo (it was actually somewhat of a neat design from HP; the entire case could swing out, leaving the PSU behind for easy access), put the mobo on that. Went through RAM sticks until I got one or two that worked. Put in the HDD from the first HP since it didn't die from clickdeath, used a CD rom drive from the second one, and I was in business. It isn't too bad since I mostly do PHP development and AIM/IRC talk on it, which don't require beefy computers, but I'd like to actually have a computer that I can use my Steam account on again.

Right now, the only reason I'm getting to PAX is due to the good nature and help from my clanmates, who are paying for my airfare and hotel space (with me eventually paying them back). I'll literally be at PAX with probably 40$ to my name and the clothes on my back, but they're just that awesome. Being able to play in a computer LAN would be a new experience for me as there's always been such a mismatch of computers around here that I could never play games with anyone. And the games at local shops were always above my system specs, so most of my LANning has been Halo 2 and Halo 3. A 3 Day Pass and a BYOC slot+computer would help with my costs immensely, and I'd much enjoy the experience.

I don't even bother anymore. The two fans are set up in a way that dust can't set on the cooling fins (long story about why there's no fan on top of them anymore), so I don't care.

You think I'd willingly hook that piece of shit up if I didn't have to?

It -used- to be a decent computer. But computer after computer died and I've pieced together that monster out of 3-4 other computers, and the other parts (the case the mobo is sitting in, the RAM, the smaller fan) came from HPs. That were new in 1999. My GeForce 4 MMX 440 died, even though it's shit it's still better than the onboard. I can't even run 2D games under Linux because the chipset is too old to be supported and Ubuntu runs in software.

The newest (and probably has the most resale value) part is the DVD drive, and that's because I just needed to be able to burn CDs/read CDs again so I could reinstall Ubuntu.

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2.0 GHz
      RAM: 224MB
Video: VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP (I'd never heard of it either)
      HD Size: 37GB
Motherboard: Gigabyte (37 of them, apparently) Technology 7VM400M-RZ, clocked at 133 MHz

      SHIT

      Teh blurbz0rz:

I love PC gaming. I love Bioshock, Team Fortress 2, Diablo 2, WoW (though I've quit), UT2k4, FEAR, Oblivion, all those. Love 'em to death.

The problem, see, is that my computer is a shitbag. It can't play anything, short of flash games or something like Maple Story, which--I've measured--runs at a blazing 10 frames per second.

Oh, wait, did I say blazing? I meant INFURATINGLY SHITTY. I mean, Maple story! MAPLE FUCKING STORY, a game with no 3d rendering AT ALL, still plays like shit, and that's even with all settings at the lowest possible level with nobody else on the screen!

The only way for me to play games that demand anything is to go to my dad's computer. Now his rig is much MUCH better. Oblivion, at full settings, runs at 50fps. I know that because that was the game he bought while he was building it to test it out.

Recently, tragedy struck. A huge virus hit my dad's computer. Windows was crippled before he could remove it. He has to reinstall the OS, which he says he probably won't get around to doing until summer's over (he uses Linux. and that half of the partition is still intact, so he's in no hurry).

My entire PC gaming enthusiasm has been cut off. I get urges to play a round of UT or TF2 or even something as simple as Diablo and I just can't. It's horrible. I feel castrated without my PC games, since the only other system I have is a PS3, and while CoD4 is great fun with a sixaxis it's just not the same without that glorious keyboard and mouse.

I beg of you, BigRed, thou PAX contest god--have mercy on my humble gaming soul. If I may again frag the n00bs, even for one day, within a beastly machine such as yours in the arena of awesome known far and wide in hushed, reverent whispers as the invincible BYOC, I shall be happy, for I shall be the Dead Parrot once more, and I shall laugh as I backstab merrily and, smiling a grin of infinite malice, sap your sentry.

tl;dr my computer is shit, and the one I normally play on went kaput; PICK ME PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE =]

I've never been to PAX before. I heard about PAX on the 1up Yours podcast last year, and I've wanted to go ever since. I convinced my mom to let me go to PAX 08 last September.

I didn't find out about BYOC until March or April. I think it sounds like a ton of fun considering that I've never been to a LAN. I was considering building a new computer speciffically for PAX, but I really don't have the money. I also figured it would be kind of a hassle to drag a PC from Michigan to Seattle.

My current computer isn't horrible, it gets awesome frame rates on Minesweeper and Solitare, but when you play a hardcore game like Euchre, it slows to a halt:D. It can play HL2, but the load times are ginormous, the frame rate is ok unless you do something intense like moving or firing a gun. I sometimes try to play Audiosurf, but its not a lot of fun when the frame rate is 5 for most of the song.

BTW, I really want to play Bioshock. It's been out for a year and I haven't gotten to play it yet because I don't have a good PC or a 360.

EDIT: I just ran 3DMark03 on my PC and got a score of 1081.
      EDIT2: 4790 in 3DMark2001 SE.

LMAO at good frame rates on minesweeper.
      Well done. And nice tablecloth.

I want to play bioshock tooooo
My dad had just gotten a torrent of it when his rig went poof. (he did pay for it, but steam was being a jackass and wouldn't let him play it.)
I'll get it on PS3 with the extra stuff :D
