It was one of those beach balls covered with cloth, so it had enough heft to get kind of high, but not enough to hurt people.
After the ball was gone, a guy ran up the stairs with a bean bag (they are actually pretty light) and tossed it from the 4th floor. It landed on the second floor railing before it went to the ground, so even if it had the potential to hurt someone, it worked out okay. It was still a horrible idea, though.
The bean bag thing was funny, but would've been more responsible if there were fewer people all of whom were alerted to the plan. In other words, on your own with a few friends... not a convention of 20k, half of whom had their faces planted in DSes.
The elbows to the face were something I was afraid of. I hope no one got too hurt. Some people just lose sight of the big picture when there's some fun thing going on.
The moment I enjoyed most was on Sunday, when a surrogate ball (pure beach ball) was put into play. At one point, the female enforcer who put it out there fell backwards onto a guy+girl sharing a sumo bean bag. They got to know each other at the speed of gravity.
PAX at any other place than the West Coast just wouldn't be the same. That's as good of an idea as having cosplay. I'm all for costumes but it doesn't belong at PAX.

Perhaps if you lived further away, you'd have a different opinion. Shit... you live closer to PAX than I do and I'm practically on top of it.
From a business point of view, (i.e., if I were Khoo), I'd be more worried that the fan base wouldn't be as strong on the east coast. However, someone (Tycho?) stated that the majority of their readers are actually east coasters. Something I always wondered about and was surprised by the answer.
And if the east coast PAX was anywhere near Boston (my original home town), I just might go and get some family visits in too!

But anyway, back to the ball...
I take it you don't peruse the forums very much. Most of the people here are not on the West Coast. Whippy, Riotcow and I all live in Houston, Texas and I think we're the furthest ones down. We're so far down, the Supertrip doesn't even come within 2 states of us.
It's true, I don't peruse much. Only for about 2 months leading up to PAX and a month after... and only in the PAX section.
But... though I could walk through every member and check their location, I assumed west costers would be in the majority given PA's location. Word of mouth is how they got started and the mouths had to have started here-ish.
All of my conjecture is irrelevant though. They said it straight up. East coasters are the majority. Surprised me, that's all.
I fully agree an east coast PAX would be good. You Texas folk will still have to travel far, I'm afraid. There just aren't enough people in the middle to warrant anything being held there. You know... in Jesusland. ;-)
If only they had gotten footage of the guys carrying it up the flights of stairs. You nkew something was going down as soon as you saw an oversized red bag being carried up.

During the key note with all the balls and **** flying around I was sitting next to a writer for IGN, he ended up punching me in the side of the head and I got a little scratch (nothing permanent) but I hardly felt it.
Good part about it is that now I have a great story to tell everyone, big bad IGN writer punching the small time game site writers for the best story. I even caught up with Alex St. John and told him bout it, he seemed too distracted to give a proper reaction though, oh well!
There were some enforcers at the front desk bouncing a ball on the up escalator, trying to get as many steps as possible before it hit the floor. Ah, the bordom.
What makes you say it is for sure being planned? If memory serves me correctly Gabe and Tycho said that it was a possibility, but never asserted it's existence in any state as of yet.

In fact, he said that expansion plans are afoot. Not only will the Bellevue convention change locations next year, Penny Arcade plans an East Coast version of PAX in 2008, specific location as yet undecided. "Actually," Khoo comments, "most of our readers are on the East Coast."
Durrrrrrrrrr. :P
Also, he told me at dinner last Thurs that the Seattle area PAX will never go away.

Can we get the chemicals in. 'Cause anything's better than this.

Let the record show that you need better taste in friends.
That was seriously a stupid dick move that could have hurt someone and had the beanbags taken away from all of us.
If it means anything, my camera took the brunt of the hit. I thought it was hilarious that he did it, even after I didn't move out of the way.

Also, The Ball was made out of win.
