[Game Over] Demons and Cults, Saturn Backwards Wins!

edited August 2008 in Debate and/or Discourse
Introduction

The city of Phalla is grand by almost any standard, home to religious orders as well as the central hub for merchants and scholars alike, marketplaces stocked with exotic goods from all the corners of the earth and libraries replete with texts on almost every subject.

The legends say that in ancient times the city had a very different nature, one of continual strife and depravity. The inhabitants of the city would form shifting warring factions to please their masters, a pantheon of greater demons. The motivation for the conflict varied, be it a struggle for power or sheer amusement, but it never ceased for long. It is said that when this infighting reached its highest, when several of the greater demons decided that the city of Phalla should be under their control alone, that a force of virtuous men and otherworldly beings mounted an invasion and were able to defeat the divided evils and banish them.

Few outside of the temple priests, historical scholars, and raving doomsayers pay much thought to these legends, and those who did had differing reasons for doing so. Very little evidence from that time remains aside from a small number of holy artifacts, supposedly left over from the invaders, and those are kept well guarded and out of sight.

However, there is another set of individuals who take a keen interest in these matters, that know that the banishment of the demonic influence was not absolutely complete. These are members of demonic cults, who while not eliminated have been subdued and remained hidden and betrayed little of their continued existence for ages. And soon they will have an opportunity to take back what they see is rightfully theirs.

Basic Rules:

This is a Phalla game that has exactly what it says on the tin: demons and cults. It has multiple competing bad guy factions and the standard Phalla rules (such as no anonymous communication) apply, unless explicitly said otherwise. There will be 50 players, and the game should start shortly after it fills up.

Each night, you may !vote to have the village direct a player to be executed. Retractions are optional by !abstain, only the latest vote in a day will count. For activity you must vote or abstain each night or be potentially replaced by reserve players unless you give the host notice. Voting closes at 8:00 PM Pacific (11:00 PM Eastern), and only votes with a timestamp of 7:59 PM or earlier will be counted for that day.

On death it will be revealed if a player is a special or if they have been corrupted by demonic influence, however their exact role and the nature of that corruption will not be shown, and their affiliations will at most be hinted at with this information.

!Clarifications can be made in thread, but there will be a number of somewhat hidden mechanics that will not be clarified.

Rules clarifications

1. You may reveal your abilities to others, but do not quote your PM for confirmation purposes

2. Retractions are unnecessary. !Abstain means that you aren't voting for anyone. If you want to switch your vote just vote for the new person, only latest vote will count

3. Vote ties are typically broken by RNG

Roles and Factions

Demonic Factions:
There are a few major demonic cults known to the Phallians, each of which serves an individual demonic patron. Here are some noteworthy demonic patrons whose cults may have to be dealt with to some degree:

Nrutas, the Overload - While many greater demons have a sizable force subordinate lesser demons, few go to the extent of Nrutas in investing so much of their power towards the creation and manipulation of demonic hordes. Followers of Nrutas tend to be well trained in dark arts of demonic using sacrifices and the blood and sometimes flesh of their victims. Their calling card of draining hapless victims completely of blood tends to be effective in demoralizing their enemies in addition to collecting raw materials for their profane acts.

Sunaru, the Mystic - A greater demon whose main focus is sorcery. He takes great interest in experimentation with various forms of magic. And explosions. Many sorcerers have been brought under his influence due to the promise of power and release from societal norms that would limit full exploration of their art. The practice of sorcery has been widely forbidden and forced underground as a result of Sunaru, even though it's far from exclusively used by his cult.

Sunev, the Decadent - A patron of partying, though perhaps not the sort of partying that most people would have in mind. The fun doesn't stop just because someone loses and eye. Sunev is a popular choice as a target of a firey sermon by the temple priests, guardians of moral standards and practices, as they fret at the thought of their congregations being seduced away from them. The followers of Sunev go by the title "The Pretty Princesses", and Phallians far and wide would be wise to fear for their daughters in the wake of Sunev!
Roles
Here the known roles present in the game. There may or may not be others. Each has 3 key features: speciality, corruption, and alignment. Speciality and corruption will be revealed somewhat on death, and alignment determines what faction they are and what their win conditions are.

Non-specials:

Villager - non-special, uncorrupted, village aligned
A prominent member of some part of Phallian society who otherwise has no noteworthy abilities nor any demonic influence. They want to put an end to any cultist activity in the city so they can go back to their everyday lives. Note: everyone will receive a villager PM, and some will get an additional role PM

Corrupted Villager - non-special, weakly corrupted, village aligned
With a potential demonic invasion, it is possible that they will try to leave their mark and spread their influence into the populace itself. However, typically this corruption is weak enough such that it will not override the will of the individual, though they will appear to be tainted. Corrupted villagers are still aligned with the village and want to eliminate the cults.

Seers: A fair number of Phallians have latent powers of second sight, which comes in different flavors and reveals different insight to the user. The only stable way for these abilities to awaken is in pairs, with two complementary individuals gifted with the same abilities. If the pair combines together, their abilities will improve even further

Farseer - special, uncorrupted, village aligned
Farseers have a wide breadth understanding of the composition of the village, and are able to see the extent of the corruption and how widespread special abilities are. However, their sight lacks focus necessary to single out individuals.

Inquisitor - special, uncorrupted, village aligned
Focused on finding and wiping out demonic influence wherever it may hide, Inquisitors can peer into the minds of their fellows in the search of evil. They are unafraid of what they may find within the depths of a corrupted mind.

Seeker - special, uncorrupted, village aligned
Seekers have their second sight attuned to the powers of their targets, and are able to determine if someone is in possession of special abilities.

Vigilantes:

Sorcerer - special, uncorrupted, village aligned
These are practitioners of the mystic arts who have not fallen under demonic sway but have nevertheless been forced underground. Their knowledge and abilities lead them to realize the full danger presented by the demonic incursion, give them the means to do something about it, as well as remove any inhibitions about routing out the cults regardless of the potential for collateral damage.

Guardians:

Knights Hospitaller - special, uncorrupted, village aligned
Knights Hospitaller are holy warriors charged both with the protection of the city and aid for the sick and injured, they have the abilities necessary to protect their fellows from all but the most potent of assaults. Their piety and devotion to their cause also renders them immune to any corruptive influences.

Cultists:

Thralls - non-special, weakly corrupted, cult aligned
These are individuals who have been put under the sway greater demon. While they serve their particular cult, they do not have a direct pact with their patron demon. They tend to lack special gifts from their masters, and often to worship at the periphery of the cults.

Cultist - special, moderately corrupted, cult aligned
The central members of the demonic cults, these individuals have direct pacts with their masters. Cultists have done what they can to maintain secrecy and anonymity, as once trouble starts they are going to make people die. In addition, it is rumored that they periodically perform demonic rituals, and can gain more direct assistance from their master through them. The cults seek to eliminate those not under their sway, so it is doubtful that they would aid each other for reasons other than short term opportunism.

Hopefully these demons and cults will be less confusing than the current CF (Lovecraftian) demons and cults.

The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.

CJ said this game was decently complicated when he looked at the rules, so perhaps not. I haven't been paying attention to the CF game though.
