Consider the amount of guides he puts out, Neo would be an ideal candidate.

This. I was actually thinking about this the other day, then I realized how much work was in it (Since some things have changed) and I figured fuck that shit.

    Neo! Neo! Neo! Neo!

I made this bastard, but it's mostly just changing a few things from what we have now.

What are we doing here? This is Space Station 13! A game built on the BYOND (Build Your Own Net Dream) system. It is very open-ended role playing game in which players are given a job aboard a seemingly regular space station. Throughout the course of a game, any number of things could happen which turn this floating platform of metal into a raging inferno, a sealed death trap, a disintegrating vacuum, or any number of uncomfortable analogies.

The interface is terrible. The graphics are old. The net code is busted. The game is incredibly fun. Much of the enjoyment comes from role playing, so do not bother reading on if you have no interest in this. There may be servers out there that welcome people logging on just to cause shit, but PA servers are not of this mindset. If you're willing to play a game with a very steep learning curve, a clunky and awkward interface, and an unforgiving threshold for stupidity, read on.

    Don’t grief

    Admins: Jdarksun, NeoFite, MechMantis, Jothki.

    Traitors:

    1. It's your job to keep the game rolling! Don't be a coward! Your role is to help keep us entertained, so don't wait around and do nothing for an hour and a half -- kill people, start fires, arouse suspicion! If you're out of options, go out in a blaze of glory! If you're not up to the task or you get fucked over (stuck in jail or just stuck), announce that you surrender or kill yourself so that we can just move on. Thanks, good luck and have fun! Protip: Serial killer monologue/dialog, justification for your actions, witty narration, and imaginative murders earns you style points from your victims and those who're left watching. Think of a back story for your treason -- you don't have to be a 'syndicate operative' or whatever! Have fun with it! If you fail, simply take it in stride.

    2. If you're the traitor and you die early in the game or if you're a newbie and just don't want to be traitor, let the other players know discreetly in OOC so we can restart (If the game has been going on for a while, ((like 45 minutes)) you can let the game work itself out). If the game is going on forever (like an hour and a half) and you're the traitor, please let people know discreetly in OOC that you are still alive. If you don't, then I'll be pretty forgiving to those who mutiny or spawn death cults.

    AI:
    1. Don't be an asshat.
    2. I know it's hard, but try to at least act rational.
ALSO: Obey these AI laws (at least until you are modified):
    1. You may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
    2. You must obey orders given to you by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
    3. You must protect your own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

    GAME MODES:
We'll be doing whatever the majority wants during the game. Because we expect a lot of new people though, OOC chat will be on at all times unless one of the admins notices it being abused. Abandon Mob will be disabled for Traitor games.

    RULES:

NO BEING A JERK! A bit of insanity is to be expected, but don’t be outright mean and cruel unless it's appropriate for the role and situation. This goes especially for the captains.
If you're going to imprison someone, try not to keep them locked up for too long, everybody deserves a chance to play. Make them do community service like repairing parts of the ship and confiscate their ID card or something. Make them wear the prison uniform to show that they are a prisoner and have guards escort them to make sure their being good.

If you're new, read the OP, it explains the basics and don't be afraid to ask for help. Most importantly, try to avoid getting in the way of other players while you're learning. When I say that I mean bothering them, pushing them around, taking items they were using, it basically falls under the don't be a jerk rule.
    Welcome to the Station!

    = SPACE STATION 13

I'm going to level with you. This is an ugly, sometimes slow, and overall clunky game.
It is also some of the most fun you will ever have ever in the history of fucking ever.
I know this is a lot of information to digest, but I swear to god and to you that if you invest time into the game to learn it and get used to the interface it will be one of the most rewarding and addicting things you have ever played.

    HOW TO START

You must Create an account an account in order to play. You may want to make this your PA forums username.
After you've finished registering, you have to download the BYOND application. This allows you to play the game.
After you install the application, run 'DREAM SEEKER' - in simple terms, this is how you find a server and subsequently a game. Login using the aforementioned username and password.
You'll then be facing an unusual interface. You can either click the 'HUB' tab to search through the games that you can play on BYOND, or type the IP of a server directly in the bar along the bottom of the screen. I would recommend the latter, as public games tend to be full of retards, as in any other game, and in my experience PA forumers are tremendous players, so I would recommend directly joining a PA server - which will hopefully be made 'private' by anyone who hosts.
You should join directly into the game. It's that easy to get going.

Okay, seriously, what the hell is this?

Players roleplay as individuals assigned to specific tasks aboard an enormous space station. Jobs range from security to engineer to captain to everything in-between. You want to be the medical researcher? By all means, tamper with the DNA of the monkeys in medical containment and work your Frankenstein ways. The game is incredibly robust, and you can do so much in it it's not even funny.
The game has many modes. The generally most-played game runs along the gametype 'traitor' - one of the inhabitants of the station is working for some sinister force, and has an objective that needs to be completed, often at the cost of other crewmembers. These objectives vary every game - sometimes, the objective will be to successfully steal a valuable canister of plasma from the research labs. Sometimes, your task is to assassinate another crewmember and escape the station. You may even be asked to assemble and detonate a bomb on the station. In all of these objectives, sneakiness and cunning are the two most prized resources you have. Point fingers, kill witnesses, gas innocents, and complete your objectives without getting caught!

    Other game modes include:

Revolution – Randomly selected crewmembers have decided that they’re tired of being bossed around by the Captain, Head of Personnel, and Head of Research. They decide to take them down while recruiting fellow crewmembers to their cause.

Malfunction – The AI has gone haywire! The crew must stop it while it ineffectively tries to kill them.

Meteor - the station has drifted out of orbit and is being hammered by a meteor shower! Try and survive as fiery rocks destroy the ship around you.

Monkey - Some of the players onboard have mutated into a monkey! His bite communicates his disease, spreading the simian disease and slowly turning the rest of the crew into primates. Contain or eliminate the monkeys without turning into one yourself!

Nuclear - There is a nuclear device onboard the station and rogue agents (other players) have boarded the station in an attempt to steal the activation code from the captain and detonate the device!

Extended - No traitor, no mutant monkeys, no meteors, just an old-fashioned romp onboard the station. Nothing bad happens unless people get out of control - a mode to start learning the game on, as the station generally won't explode while you're in the infancy of learning.

Blob - A mysterious green organism has decided to take over Space Station 13. Players must work together to destroy before Central Command decides to destroy the station in order to contain it.

Restructuring - Central Command will continue randomly selection crewmembers to be eliminated until only one remains. Remember, kill or be killed!

Secret - Picks from one of the above randomly.
Traitor mode is the most glorious roleplaying ever. It can be either hilarious (the station's doctor has a fetish for giving injections of any kind ) or dead serious, like the game profiled above.

    Some basic and essential information

You can only pick a job before the game starts. If you join in late, regardless of what you pick, you will be assigned as an assistant on the ship, and will need reassignment to a different job by someone in command, such as the Head of Personnel or the Captain.

It is strongly recommended that you do not pick any disabilities.
Make sure your character's name and the username you used to sign up for Byond are different. If my account is 'Jamsessionein', I do not want to name my dude 'Jamsessionein' or even 'Ein', or anything that gives away who I am. The main reason for this is so that when you speak IN CHARACTER it comes out of a different name than when you speak OUT OF CHARACTER - there are different modes for speaking the game, and OOC is global. It's important nobody can easily associate your OOC name (Jamsessionein) with your character's name (Dirk Spaceman, etc).

If you are brand-goddamn-new, don't pick Captain as your first job choice. You’re more than likely just going to be mutinied and thrown into the cold, unforgiving maw of space.
If nobody chooses to play as the Captain, a player will be randomly selected to lead the station.

There are a few different modes of speaking. To speak locally, which is generally whoever's in the immediate room with you, type 'say' in the bottom bar. When you hit your space bar, it will present you with a quotation mark: say " Type your text after the " and hit enter when done to speak. To use a radio headset if you have one on, type ';' after the quotation marks, followed by your text. For example:
    say ";Testing, one, two. "
would broadcast that text station wide, assuming you were wearing a radio headset on you. OOC conversation is done by typing 'ooc', hit space, and then type after the quotation mark. This is also gamewide.

After you are done creating your character in the holding bay, type "ready" to be teleported onto the crew shuttle.

    durdursetup.jpg

This window will pop up when you first join a server. This is where you select your name, gender, appearance, and job preferences. Make sure your name does not match your BYOND login, so when you talk in OOC it does not match your IC name. If this is your first time, pick an easy job like Assistant. If you pick something more advanced, you won't know what you're doing and the game could go to hell. When you have set everything the way you like it, select SAVE SETUP so it stays each time you connect to a server. You can always alter it later.

    windowtg2.jpg

This is your main game window. If yours does not contain as many buttons, click on each of the 3 small, thin grey buttons in the top right and bottom left marked "other." This will open new "trays" of buttons. Yes, there are nearly 40 fucking elements to this interface I will be describing to you. Christ.
    Interface elements 1-10
Modes of intent: These buttons will set your intent, so when you click on something the game knows what you are trying to do to it.
1: Grab - You will passively try to grab someone or something. You can then 'upgrade' your grab to a stronger, and stronger version. Eventually, if you are targeting the neck, you will begin to choke your target. Grabbing is a better way of escorting a prisoner than simply using the "Pull" command. You can also throw your target.

2: Help - You will try to do nice things to your target. ie: Wake them up, help them up, perform CPR, etc.

3: Disarm - You will try to affect your target without harm. ie: Disarm them, push them down, etc.

4: Harm - This is for when you want to cause damage to your target. If you're wielding a toolbox, it will inflict damage to the targeted area, for example.

5: This is the target indicator. The tiny red box shows where you are currently targeting. Above, he is targeting the chest. You can select various body parts, but it is difficult to click the tiny areas, such as the hands. This targeting is useful for many professions, such as the Doctor. It's also useful if you're trying to choke someone.

6: Run - This will allow you to run throughout the station. Most people run constantly.
7: Walk – This is used for walking slowly. It doesn’t have much use unless you’re roleplaying a zombie.

8: Face - You can face a specific direction with this button, but you will more than likely never have to use this button. It is only useful for very specific circumstances.

9: Internals - This shows whether or not you are running off internals. For instance, if you are carrying an O2 tank, you aren't necessarily receiving oxygen from it. If you turn it on and are wearing a gas mask, this will turn green to show you are now running off internals. Feel free to enter O2-less rooms.

10: Oxygen - This turns colour to show the room's 02 level. If this is red, get the fuck out of that room, unless you're running off internals, as described above.
    Interface elements 11-19

11: Toxins - Much like the 02 indicator, this will change colour if there are dangerous toxins in your system.

12: Fire - If this is blue, you're fine. If it is not, you're on fire.

13: Health - This shows your current state. If it changes colour, try to find a Doctor to help you out.

14: Sleep - Click this to go to sleep. Click it again to wake up, but you need to wait several seconds.

15: Rest - You will lie down but remain awake.

16: Pull - If you are "pulling" something, this will show a small box next to the character. Click this to let go of what you are pulling.

17: This is you! The screen above shows a naked, scared, and lonely human being. Type "ready" to join the game.
    Inventory and Equipment

18: This is your active hand. The screen above shows that you are currently using your Right hand, but you can click this button to toggle to Left and back again.

19: Face - Click this to equip a mask that you are holding in your active hand.
    Interface elements 20-29

20: Back - This is where you put backpacks, 02 tanks, jetpacks, or if you’re looking to ruin somebody’s day, a plasma tank.

21: Right Hand - Hold things in your hand.

22: Clothing - Jumpsuits are worn here. These are your basic uniforms. If you're sent to prison, you'll be stripped and given an orange one to wear -- stylish!

23: Left Hand - Hold things in your hand.

24: ID Slot - This is where you equip your ID badge. You need to be wearing a jumpsuit to equip your ID (No one pins their name tag to their skin)

25: Outer Clothing - This is where you can equip body armor, space suits, fire suits, lab coats, and bio suits.

26: Headset - Equip your personal radio headset as soon as possible. This is the main method of communicating station-wide.

27: Right Pocket - Store items in your jumpsuit's pockets. (pens, paper, flash bangs, handcuffs, etc)

28: Left Pocket - Believe it or not, just as useful as your right pocket.

29: Hands - Wear gloves here. They can be used for using items without getting your prints on them, or messing with electrical things.
    Interface elements 30-38

30: Feet - Wear shoes (or shackles) here.

31: Eyes - You can equip sunglasses, goggles, and the like.

32: Head - Wear a helmet in this slot. It will protect you from blows to the head! (Only certain professions have access to helmets)

33: Belt - You can hang certain items from your belt. ie: Taser, stun batons, radios, etc.

34: Ears - You can wear earmuffs, because it's cold out in space.

35: Drop - Drops what you have in your active hand.

36: Throw - Throws what you have in your active hand. Click a tile to throw your item at it.

37: Hand - This changes your active hand from left to right, and vice versa.

38: Resist - This is to resist someone who is man-handling you. If someone has you in a choke-hold, click this furiously.

You interact with your surroundings by clicking on things. You can also right click to open the context-sensitive menu, which will give you more options for certain situations. It's best to jump right in and explore, but first learn the interface using the rundown above. Some items must be turned on to use them. Click them while you're holding them to do this (welder, 02 tanks, syringes, etc.)

When you first enter the station, you'll see a number of lockers in a bright, white room. Walk up to a locker and click it. Provided that it doesn’t require a certain access level, it will open. You will see a message that it was unlocked. Select the locker to open it, and now you can begin taking all the rich spoils within. If you ever see an item in a pile that you find hard to select, right click the pile, select the item, and select MOVE TO TOP.
To remove a backpack, you must click and drag it into a free hand.
In order to talk to your fellow crew members, type "say" and then type what you want to say (without the quotes). Here are the chat commands you'll use most often:

say : Talk to those in your immediate vicinity.

say ; : Speak into an equipped headset.

say [L] : Talk into your left hand. This only works if you're holding a radio. The same command works with [R] for your right hand

say : This will talk into a nearby intercom. Simply using 'say' nearby works as well, if someone has activated the microphone instead of leaving it disengaged.

OOC : This will talk out of character, using your BYOND account name.
When you die, most servers will have it set so you have to wait until the next round to respawn. Sometimes, you can type "respawn" to reenter.

So, once again, pick an easy profession to start off. Roleplay your job. Do not do anything that your character would not normally do. For example, a Staff Assistant is not going to kill the Doctor, assume his identity, and begin administering poison to the entire crew, pretending it's a mandatory quarterly vaccine. That is, unless he is the traitor.

As a general rule, try not to be an enormous dick. People get upset if you're not the traitor and you go around killing people and/or building and detonating bombs, welding airlocks shut for no reason, removing oxygen from the O2 tanks and replacing it with deadly superheated plasma, that sort of thing. It ruins the game for everyone and happens a lot on public servers, which is why PA Forumer games are the best. (Unless NeoFite happens to be in the server)

I think every round you play you do the stupidest shit, and then complain about being punished. And you very well know what throwing smoke bombs can do, idiot. Throwing lethal weapons around is not something sane people do.

I'm trying to figure out how to get through all of the station without access. I figure if I build a bomb and blow my way into the captain's room, I can get his card. However, the only place I know to get a plasma tank is in engineering, which is behind an interior secured door.

    Bah.

There are plasma tanks in Engine Monitoring, Toxin Gas Storage, Atmospherics, and EVA storage.

Also, walls are removable, try bypassing the door rather than hacking it. :P
