PAX Rain Slick Precipice Costume Contest

I wasn't sure whether this fit better here or in the Precipice thread, but I'll stick it here since the contest is taking place at the convention.

I've been poking around and haven't seen anyone talking about entering this contest, or even vaguely mentioning it in passing, so I wondered is anyone taking part?

I know the contest came up quite suddenly; the news post about it didn't come up until about mid-August, so knowing how long costumes can take to make, I was wondering if anyone was still going to give it a shot.

We only have about two weeks left to PAX, and with a 3,000 HP point Rain Slick system and possible special edition copies of RSPOD in the mix, I can't believe that no one is going to try.

So, guys? Gals? Are you participating, and if so, as who?

My boyfriend is going to be cosplaying as Gabriel, I am going as Tycho (not a female version, but rather a manned-up Tychoed version of myself, since I am a girl), and my younger sister is going as Anne-Claire.

Oh, I've been planning on being RSPD Tycho for months now. When I heard about the contest, I was ecstatic. And there was a thread made about this already a while back. I was the only one committed to the idea. No one else had the time. I've already got my costume completed, with Tommy gun, thick leather bound book, knickers, tie... the works.

I was going to put together a Fruit Fucker "costume," but I haven't had time. I'll be able to perfect it for next year though. :P

I actually haven't cut my hair in a fair amount of time either and have left myself with some pretty hefty sideburns to mimic Tycho's properly.

I went over the contest rules, and it specifically says human characters qualify for the contest. So, wouldn't have worked anyway. Just to clear your conscience about not doing it this year :)

A-Thank you! I'll be wandering PAX on Friday in the getup.

Saturday you can see me doing a classic Victorian gentleman. Full 3 piece brown suit with a pair of leather goggles on my head. Hopefully, I can get some nice cheap accessories to go with 8-)

May I suggest a merge Moe?

No peeking! My costume is 100% complete, and I finally resolved my hair problem, so I am going to be a smexy Tycho. Hell, I've been planning this for so long, I've grown my hair out and left big ol' sideburns :)

ya i think i read your post about the sideburns....mmmm....sideburns...

but ya.... i think you're proving my point that no one is gonna post their costume. if i do it will be way late in the game so there is no copying....

what is your reason for not doing a reveal? do you think you have this contest in the bag? oh do tell me officer! what is your motivation?! lol

No, just being a bit playful. It's the sport, ya know?

Honestly, I just don't want to get into my full costume and take pictures.

And no, I by no means think I have the contest in the bag. I'm actually pretty anxious and uncertain. I doubt I'll win, but it's fun anyway.

    true true...

i'm usually pretty nervous about contests but for some reason i'm feeling quite confident...
that confidence will probably be rewarded with epic failure but if someone in a fruit f#$%er costume wins after it states in the rules human characters only or someone with a obviously inferior costume wins...oh man...

I thought about that too, that would suck so hard! I hope they stick to their fine print, fer sure.

I also wondered if people were going to throw stuff together and come as their original character, which would be fairly easy....also would suck for those of us who put some work into the costumes.

I'll be happy to post some pics when all mine are done and I get some time to take pictures.

Again, I have 3 costumes being worn by 3 different folks.

    1. Jonathan Gabriel - worn by Adam Boyd
    2. Anne-Claire - worn by Mary Day
    3. Tycho Brahe - worn by me!

Officer, I think you may have me beat simply in the fact you can grow sideburns! Stupid girl stuff ruining my costume authenticity! :P

Honestly, I doubt we will see any crap costumes, no one is going to half ass this for fear of losing.

Personally, I could really use a new PC, more to the fact, I could use it because I am jobless and need the money I could get for it to pay my rent..

I doubt I'll win, I DO, however, want one of those RSPD Collector's Editions.

Also, I'm betting on between 20-30 people entering.

Considering part of the judging will be on creativity, I'm sure we'll see plenty of that. People come up with some of the most fantastic ideas at cons. It's insane.

I'd love to win the computer, and equally would love a copy of the game. (Who wouldn't?)

For awhile I was a little worried about getting creamed by the other costumes....but then I figured, what the hell, I get to cosplay at an awesome convention as an awesome character....so I can't let myself really care about it. It sucks more if you don't win that way. I look forward to seeing what others have done too!

It would be great if the computer went to someone who could really put it to some good use.

20-30 sounds about right, which are pretty good odds for any of us considering it could have been a lot more if the contest had been announced earlier.

thats true.... i've been apart of a few costume contests that didn't end in my favor when the winner obviously put no effort or time into their costume...sometimes even admiting it wasn't even theirs.. i'm not usually the competitive type but i do like being recognized for effort and fairness of a contest...because for the 20-30 of us who are "seriously" competing we've put far too many hours into this these past two weeks or so since it was last minute to lose to a victorian costume rental or the like...

Actually, like I said, I'm been planning on doing this costume for months. So I've had more time than most, but once the contest came out, I put a lot more thought into it. Bought socks, new shoes, different pants, getting hair product to make my hair more Tycho-like.

I just hope some kid with a rake and a flat cap in jeans and a t-shirt doesn't take this.

exactly...i think i'm done with mine..."think being the key word"...i'm hoping the competition is small...20-30 may enter but i think many are coming as their in game character and the few that do gabe or tycho or anyone else won't all be like super...so i think the there will only be like 5-10 to really worry about...what do you think officer?

millislim: I had the same concerns as you. I feel like even if I don't win I'd like to be recognized for putting the work into the costume. And if someone who obviously didn't put the effort into it wins it's just kind of annoying. I even thought of someone with some serious cash going out and just buying the victorian gown like you mentioned....but somehow I feel that won't happen... I hope :)

Officer: I do think Anne-Claire has one of the more tricky outfits in the game, considering it's all old-timey dress designs. I've made mine entirely out of cotton with a hint of satin, since doing the whole thing in the traditional fabric would have broken me financially. :P

While Tycho's outfit is a little easier to put together, I do think that having the props are going to really make the costumes shine. Tycho isn't quite the same without his book and gun. I'm a little envious that you had planned it already :)

A group picture would be so awesome. When would most people be wearing their costumes?

I'm still weighing that myself... because I thought I'd do it Saturday, but I'm all excited and might just go Friday.

I plan on wearing mine Friday. I am hoping I can get into the Expo hall early enough to get one of those RSPD Collector's Editions.

And yeah, I had considered trying to get ahold of everything in tweed, but getting any piece of a tweed suit is wallet-cide.

So far I know this much from the forum alone:

    Characters confirmed for cosplay:

    Anne-Claire: 2
    Tycho Brahe: 2
    Jonathan Gabriel: 1
    Original Characters: 1 or 2

    Possible other cosplays:

    Secondary Characters
    - Dr. Hobo
    - Mime Pope (Still technically humanish, right?)
    - Scientist Mime (Boardwalk)
    - Garbage Man (Hobo Alley)
    - Slum Lord (Hobo Alley)
    - Madame Zadora (Boardwalk). Hey, it could happen. Just dress like a gypsy and wear a plastic case over your top half...this is what I'm talking creative people!
    - Possibly Charles...he WAS in the next ep preview so I don't know if he counts.

    Battle Characters
    - Mime Reaper Dealies I forgot the name of
    - Mimes
    - Barbershop Quartet
    - Clowns

Am I forgetting any other humanoid things? Or if you guys know of anyone else who is cosplaying something, let me know.

Also, I am suspecting, though Anne-Claire is THE female character in the game, there won't be many cosplays of her simply for the fact that her dress is one of the more complex costumes and we only had a few weeks to work on these things. There is the possibility that someone made the costume prior like Officer did, though. But aside from that happening...unless some girls throw on a pink shirt and skirt and try to pass it off ... I don't see it happening.

But that's just me :) I'm trying to remain optimistic.
