Alright, so I just bought a PS3. I usually buy my dvds off of deepdiscount.com but they don't have much a selection of anime blu-ray dvds. Is there a better place to find them? , preferably one that is Canadian shipping friendly.

There's your problem right there. There's not a whole lot out there right now except some newer stuff (Appleseed Ex Machina) or classics (Wings of Honnees) that are available on BRD right now.
Also, don't buy any given anime on Blu-ray just because it's out on Blu-ray. There might not be a noticable difference in quality, so if you can get it cheaper on DVD, do that.

Canadian shop I've ordered a bunch from to Norway without problems.
On the negative side it's canadian so some products have french(!) text in addition to english on the cover.

I love how someone got the idea to put English on one side of the DVD cover slip and French on the other. Only then they put both languages on both sides.
Most Blu-rays aren't region free, but there are less regions for Blu-Ray than there are for DVDs. I'm pretty sure USA and Japan are in the same region so you should be able to import anything from Japan.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
I knew it was something like that, but I know some uk blus work on us players. I have a link to the site with info on that at home, i'm stuck at work now.

At THIS point, I would actually disagree. If you're questioning it, question it because of the title itself. All the anime Blu Ray disks I've picked up though have been phenominal picturewise. That being said, that's also because there aren't many disks out there yet, and studios seem to be really focusing on newer movies that really take advantage of the format. Paprika for example just blew me the hell away.
I know Gurren Lagann was broadcast in HD, so I'm pretty sure the studios are making their series higher-quality now, and obviously movies would be at a higher resolution to begin with.
That said, there isn't much of a selection of Blu-Ray anime releases in North America yet because it's basically a niche product of a niche product. There's buttloads of Blu-Ray anime releases in Japan... I don't know if the PS3 is region-free or can be unlocked, but if it's possible, you could always research whatever titles you are in and see if the releases in Japan don't have English subtitles (more of them do than you might think).
As far as I've seen reported, unfortunately, no Japanese Blu Ray releases have been subtitled. And even when they did with DVD you had to be careful, like for example a lot of the Miyazaki releases were dubtitled with wrong names, subtitles when characters weren't even talking in the Japanese versions, etc. It's just a pain. Apparently Blu Ray anime sales aren't even that big in Japan yet either. Recently the biggest release ever on Blu Ray was the first volume of Macross Frontier, and I don't think it sold more than 25k. Even over there it seems to be extremely niche at the moment.
Nope, they're the Japanese releases too. Some of the stranger films that had no previous US release were new subs made for the new US releases, but the Japanese releases of stuff like Kiki(subtitles use an awful hick dialect for characters), Cagliostro(entire scenes worth of dialog missing, character called Wolf, etc), etc that had old dubs have their subs based off of that. Then you have something like FLCL, which only volumes 2+ were subtitled, while the first disk wasn't. If you're going to buy region 2 dvd, or Blu Ray, you reeeally better make damned sure you know what you're getting first. And this isn't even getting into the crap HK boots with awful subs that they try to pawn off as legit, either.
There are a few Jap Anime Blu-Ray titles with english subtitles, such as the Ghost in the Shell movies etc. But at around £50 to import, and reading up reviews suggest it ain't much improvement on the DVD releases. Best to wait right now.
I don't know if the PS3 is region-free or can be unlocked
Yes the PS3 is Region free. The only issues is PAL vs NTSC, PAL PS2 can play both while NTSC PS3 can only play NTSC video. This shouldn't be a problem for Blu-ray as the HD standards are universal.
FYI, Best Buy will price match Blu-ray movies to online distributors, just make sure you have a print out of the page with you.

A better guide is to stick the the stuff that has gotten US release. Every thread I've read on BR-type forums about import anime BRs has said very bad things about quality, whereas we've gotten pretty awesome transfers of Paprika, Tekkonkinkreet and the like.

Yeah, this is a good point. Big titles are a pretty safe bet, but I've seen some really shoddy non anime blurays. It's bound to spread into anime.
As for the ps3 discussion: The ps3 isn't region free. ps3 games are, but not blurays, dvds and ps1/2 games.

True, but at least Japan and the US are the same region now.
If only Japan put effort into their BR releases and import sites didn't overcharge, it'd be perfect.

Yeah, it probably helps that a good majority of the anime titles at this point are things like Paprika that are actually big studio produced disks. When you have some of the regular US companies (if there are any of the damned studios left in a couple months) starting to release stuff, it'll definitely start to be more of a mixed bag.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....

That was one thing that made me giddy about HD-DVD. They were all region-free. Japan had Band of Brothers on HD-DVD over a year ago.
