PAX solo?

edited August 2008 in PAX Archive
Back in 2007, after reading all the news posts from PAX 07 and listening to the Wil Wheaton keynote, I made up my mind that I would be attending this year's PAX. Once the dates were confirmed I reserved a hotel room, and booked a flight. The group of people I was going with ordered their tickets to PAX, but did little else...and one by one they've all let me know that they can't go. So now I've got my plane ticket and my hotel room and my PAX badge, but no one to go with. So I'm looking for advice.

A small part of me just wants to cancel the hotel room and try to get any refund I can on the plane ticket. But the rest of me is really psyched to experience PAX first-hand.

I'm the kind of person who is perfectly okay being alone. I can go out to eat or even to a movie alone if I can't find anyone to go with. PAX, however, is a bit bigger than a solo dinner or movie. So is this something that can be done? I'm relatively shy, so I'm not about to just throw in with some random group I find and become best friends with them, but I'm personable enough that I can probably find people to talk to here and there.

So what say you fellow (possibly) PAX attendees? Is PAX doable solo, should I toss up a "LFG" tag when I arrive, or should I just stay at home?

P.S. My mind is mostly made up to attend, I guess I'm just looking for reassurance. :)

Ya, I was solo last year and I'm solo again this year.

Find friends once you're there. It's a friendly kind of place.

You don't need to bring your friends :D IF you come alone you will make more friends :) It's pretty easy, I bring friend with me each year and i see them less then i see the new people i meet, We could always meet up :D More friends are fun for food.

I have always had a ton of fun with the people I've gone to PAX with.

Almost every single time I tried talking to someone I met at PAX they were a local Seattlite and really were not interested in talking to me. The exception were the forum events that were filled with non-locals.

You can find my Dear Friends in Seattle thread for a more complete discussion.

Check the community events thread. Lots of places to meet and get to know people. The PAX attendees are generally very friendly and inclusive.

There have also been other PAX solo threads like this one.

I made the mistake of not going solo last year. Don't do what I did.

Plus VT has offered to be my friend for the weekend so all is well.

Indeed. Last year was my first PAX, and because I was afraid of going solo, I "enlisted" in The Black. (Best decision of my entire fucking life, by the way.) From first-hand experience last year: PAX is TOTALLY do-able by yourself, and while it brings me great joy to be able to contribute as an Enforcer, I didn't have to do what I did. I would have been fine just going solo. The only possible problem is: if you cannot afford the rape-tastic hotel room rates by yourself (as I cannot) you will need one or more people to share a room with. Other than that, it's easy to go by yourself and it's a blast.

Essentially, you will never be bored here. Last year I brought a bunch of stuff to keep myself occupied in case of boredom and never needed it except on the flight over and the flight back. You can absolutely come alone and have the time of your life.

    This.

It took actually attending PAX for me to understand this, but keep this in the back of your mind and you'll want to attend so bad you can't stand it: PAX is a different world, and your expectations for the people around you will grow to be different. While you are at PAX, nearly every person there will know what LFG means, and the only people who might think it's silly will be newcomers who are still in "general public" / "hide the fact that I'm a gamer" mode and haven't yet adapted to PAX.

We are your brethren, and it's a life-changing experience to see fifty thousand people -- a sea of humanity -- who all respect and share your passion for gaming. To borrow a phrase, after PAX it will feel like someone turned down the volume on the rest of the world.

I went completely alone to my first PAX, granted, I was an Enforcer, but it still seemed crazy to come from Ohio and know no one and Enforce, but it didn't take long before I had great friends to sit around w/ on breaks, to go play GH w/, or to just go get some food with. Oddly, I'm a bit shy at first in a situation like that, but after the initial nervousness, I too realized I am not alone, I am with geeks. I am home. :)

Another option is to put LFG on a shirt... Or better yet...

    "Healer, LFG for PAX run."

    That should generate some hits...

Ender, my story is pretty much the exact same. Last year I went solo, and met up with 3 guys (dondums is the only guy I remember) in line who ended up being my buddies at the show. It was awesome. And then this year, all of my friends were gonna come with me, and one by one had reasons they couldn't. Oh well.

PAX is still fucking mindblowing, even alone. But you will find a group of people, whether in a line or whatever, that you can chill with. And if you don't? Give me a call. I'll totally kick it with you.

I feel your indecision man, I had plans to meet a buddy coming from Canada until today when he realized he'd let his passport expire and can't leave the country. And so I spent most of this afternoon wondering if I should still go or suck up the loss. Long story short, I re-booked myself into a cheaper hotel and decided I'm going, come hell or high water. I'm reasonably shy myself (aren't most gamers?) but I still have hope I'll meet up with some cool folks and have fun.

So if you see a guy who looks like Moby wandering around alone and looking kinda dazed drop by and ask me if I'm LFG.

i think i will be alone at least one of the days. i've missed out on pax before because most of my friends are not as interested in going.

this year is kinda the same situation. but i've decided that even if they bail i'll go.

It's a little different for people who actually have to travel and get a hotel room. If i were you i'd try to find someone to share the cost of the room with on the forums. they probably won't be a jackass.

I know various local friends who are going (I live like a fifteen minute walk away), but we aren't going as a group persay.. Got a buddy coming in from Virginia too, but honestly, I'm planning on running around a ton. I have never been before, but I want to meet as many cool people as possible! If I weren't going to be wearing my goth outfit one day, and a school girl-esque outfit the other, then I would have to tape LFG to my front.

if only there were a way to do that without making it look ridiculous.

i'm not really searching for a group, but i would consider going pub crawling if invited.

    lame

well, if you go in with a big group some bars are not that interested in checking everyones ID. I'm 21 and from my experience in seattle i'd say i get carded about half the time.

if you're up for it, just go in with the group and sit down. never order, just have someone else go up to the bar for you. if you get caught just dig through your wallet for a couple minutes(like, literally a couple minutes, make em wait) and then shrug and say it must be in your car and leave.

it might not work, but if it doesn't, you haven't lost anything.

Well, the rest of the group might get kicked out. A few months ago Seattle pulled the stupidest raid on a bunch of bars, and actually hauled the bartenders off to jail, because they had served minors without carding them, and even some for accepting a fake ID. So bars might be a bit careful right now.

Although I go to Pax with friends, I let them know beforehand that I'm gonna ditch them once we get there. I want to look for new people, and it's hard to approach people or be approached if you're in a group. I love how easy it is; everyone has the same hobby and everyone wants to make new friends.

Honestly, I don't want to get in trouble, and I don't want to get anybody else in trouble either, so I won't go bar hopping/pub crawling. Private parties are the awesome though. If my apt. was bigger, I'd host one, since my place is so close to downtown. Might still, we shall see.

Yeah, but if I have one, it's gonna have to byob. And I have no amazoring games at my place, only a Game Cube.. and my DS. So I don't think it'd necessarily be that rockin' except for the fact that I'm just freaking awesome to hang out with ^_~ I jest, but I really do want to make lots of new friends.
