So I'm in a crappy mood, and I'd be really interested in some movies that make me smile.
I just saw "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and typically I dislike movies of the genre but this one made my day when I saw it- if we screw up we can redeem, despite hard times we'll be happy, etc. Just a movie that made me laugh and smile.
Tell me more that achieve those same ends (noting that I'm not necessarily looking to fall over laughing but that is 'ok'. It doesn't need to be gut busting, just feel good... a mix would be good.)
I'd go with some Bill Murray to cheer up. Groundhog Day or Ghostbusters especially.
Also, i'm a sucker for Mel Brook vehicles. All so ridicilous, but I can't stop laughing at Spaceballs, Men in Tights, or History of the World pt 1. Monty Python movies as well.
Amelie de Montmartre... might've not spelled that correctly but it's a great movie. Oh and the French Taxi movies are hilarious. Don't watch those shitty US ones, they're bad for the soul.

Dogma, Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Down With Love, Orgasmo, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Jerry Maguire, Independence Day, Armageddon, The Fifth Element ... lots more but I'm still tired.
Oh, and You've Got Mail. How can Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan go wrong?

Seconds for Amelie and Stardust.
I only just recently saw K-9, and really enjoyed it. The Shrek movies you're probably seen.. The Wedding Singer is also pretty mainstream...
If you haven't, you should see Ping Pong. I think it's hard to get much more feel-good that this one, although it's in Japanese (with some Chinese thrown in), so unless you're fluent in both languages you may want to find a copy with subtitles. The movie is about... ping pong... and heroes... well, it's so much better than it probably sounds, and you should see it.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

yes...i came in here with the idea that i'd mention Amelie...please...that is THE feel good movie
I recently saw Hot Fuzz. It's by the same guy who made Shawn of the Dead. Of all the movies that make fun of other movies, these two are by far the best I have ever seen, they blow other B movies out of the water, and you will laugh!
The best feel-good movie is That Thing You Do! The first time I saw it, I was like "wow, I loved this movie, and there was basically no dramatic tension in it whatsoever." Nothing really bad happens to anybody, and the whole movie is about one band's rise from being a happy bunch of guys playing local gigs in Indiana to one-hit wonders and enjoying it all the way.

That's definitely a big thing. Unless I'm really in the mood for 'serious, wrenching' cinema or something, I typically fast forward through those moments. They just kind of make me uncomfortable.

Yeah, That Thing You Do! was pretty great, thinking back. The song will get stuck in your head though, but that's not bad.
History of the World: Part I always makes me happy. Most Mel Brooks movies do, in fact.
I thought Paprika was really uplifting, but it's also kind of weird. But pretty. Very, very pretty. The music makes me happy too. I generally don't like anime much at all, but I love this movie.
How about some of Wes Anderson's movies? Rushmore, Bottle Rocket, Royal Tenenbaums, etc. Fair warning, they do involve some dramatic tension, but that only makes the resolution all the more satisfying in the end, IMO.
- I don't know that I'd recommend any of Wes Anderson's movies for this. I know what you guys are getting at, but if you take them at face value, they're actually pretty bleak. Like Bottle Rocket's ending. Funny? Yeah. Sweet? Yeah. Feel-good? Ehh, I dunno.
- An umpteenth vote for Amelie.
- This might not be an obvious choice, but Fellini's 8 1/2 is maybe the only film that has made me cry from happiness. There's little real tension (unless you're really into the film industry) and the last 5 minutes are downright life-affirming. And I mean that in the purest sense of the word: it's not ecstatic -- more like cathartic -- it just makes you want to enjoy life in all its peaks and valleys. At least it does for me.
- Hoosiers. "I'll make it." YOU MAKE IT JIMMY. YOU MAKE IT.
- It might be too far to the 'bitter' side of the bittersweet spectrum, but Kurosawa's Ikiru is the most life-affirming thing I've ever seen (sorry to use that phrase twice in a row). Absolutely wonderful.
- If you want more lighthearted fare that doesn't require you to wade through real hardships to get to the happy, Babe is exceedingly charming and funny with hardly any sappiness at all. Nobody is allowed to make fun of Babe. IF YOU MAKE FUN OF BABE I WILL FIGHT YOU.

I may be crucified by the beret wearing film-buffs but..
Basically anything by Cameron Crowe, excluding Elizabethtown that was just a pile of crap.

Damn, I thought I'd be the first to recommend Rushmore. I feel like that's really the only 'feel good' of his movies. One of my all time favorites.

Also, stay the fuck away from Requiem For A Dream.

I'll have to look at The Wrong Guy.
edit: Super Troopers is awesome as well.
Yes! Love Super Troopers. I still need to see that island movie they did...
"I hope."
Also, on the light happy romantic comedy side, they don't come much better than You've Got Mail.

You are forgetting about When Harry Met Sally. 8-)
Man, PA is too much like Organichu... in this instance our shared awesomeness is actually hurting the success of this thread.
Oh, and The Princess Bride.

BLAZING SADDLES
Seriously.
Most charming movie ever.
I think you meant Amélie. In which case, I concur.
The Truman Show also puts me in a good mood. Free Truman!

Just to be a little different from the other entries in here.
Princess Bride is funnier, Stardust has more sincerity.
The last tackle at the end, with the music hitting it's peak.
Makes me smile and cry, every time.

Animal House.
Baseketball. Yes, I actually thought this movie was rather funny.
Kentucky Fried Movie.
I'll concur about Amelie, too.
But definitely Pleasantville.

It'll make you laugh real hard, and give you a new game to play with your friends.
