Heads Up for Friday - Critical Mass

Just a quick note that downtown Seattle will be filled full of mad bike enthusiasts on Friday evening, starting around 5:30-6:00pm at Westlake Center. Probably this won't impact too many folks, but if you're coming in post-work on Friday and are trying to find parking, drive, look for dinner, move around, or otherwise exist in a non-confrontational fashion, expect to be confronted by hordes of rabid bike enthusiasts pedaling around in herds down the middle of the street, irritating the hell out of anyone trying to go somewhere.

--- not that I have a party to get to at 7pm or anything. Cursed hippies.

Yeah, forget about all the other motorists on the road and watch out for those wacky bikers....cause they're the ones who are going to run you down.

Also, while you're on alert, don't forget to avoid all those crazy "pedestrians" who for some reason get really angry when you run them over with your car. I hear there will be about 35,000 of them wearing lanyards and red badges walking around downtown this weekend.

    Cursed gamers.

Yeah, take note that Critical Mass ignores traffic lights and stop signs, so if you see a bike assume it is going to do something dangerous. Oh, and they are violent as well, so try not to piss em off.

No they aren't. Not really. I'm not a bike rider, but that's a few bad apples. Don't apply to them what the majority of the older generations apply to gamers.

if you see a bicyclist being a douche and going through red lights, going well below the speed of traffic and not yielding to cars or just being an asshat in general feel free to throw some trash at them.

most bikers are great, but some.... unnngggh

During Critical Mass they ALL run red traffic lights and stop signs. They even have their own term, "corkers", for people who stand out in the middle of the road blocking traffic while the rest of them run the light. They admit they do it, it's standard practice for them to break the law.

And it was only last month that an entire mob from Critical Mass in Seattle attacked a guy in a car:

Seattle Police spokesman Mark Jamieson says that on Friday between 100 and 300 bicyclists were riding down a street in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, blocking traffic on both lanes, when a man and a woman in a Subaru station wagon tried to pull out of a parking spot. But some of the bicyclists blocked them, sat on the car and began banging on the vehicle. Words were exchanged between the male driver and the bicyclists. The driver feared being assaulted and backed up, but bumped a biker and enraged the group. In response, some of the bikers smashed the windshield and rear window. He tried to drive away but hit another bicyclist. The car stopped a block down and the bicyclists surrounded the car. One biker punched the driver through an open window and another used a knife to slash the tires. When the driver got out of the car a male suspect struck him with an unknown object in the back of the head. The driver was later taken to the hospital.
