Okay, who is the asshole who rented out GameWorks?
From the looks of it, it was some rich kid's birthday party.
That being said... I'm not sure how much it costs to rent out the whole damn place, but if a bunch of forumgoers all threw in together for the sunday after next year...
it's ok, they rented out a huge arcade full of broken machines.
What, did you guys all break the machines or something? I checked out Gameworks Wednesday night, they had fixed most of their machines. They even replaced the drumheads on the Taiko drum game, something that had been in horrid shape for like 6 months! Apparently they break out their repair budget for PAX...
Gameworks costs $65,000 to rent the entire facility. Two corporations had it rented during PAX. MS and somebody else.

Turbine had their share of it too, but honestly for birthday parties it's not all that expensive to reserve it for like an hour or two, last time I checked anyway.

I'd like to give a nice big fuck you to you, whoever you are.
Ya. Seriously. I hope you earn tons of bad karma for that one. Its shit like this that really ruins pax and makes it suck. Its enough for me to not care anymore about gameworks. Besides, I found an F-zero AX machine down at pier 56 in that little arcade there. 1$ a play. It was glorious.
Other than the 3-way hockey machine that people bang on like a drum, what else is broken there? The staff that work there are pretty cool about fixing stuff up if you let them know. I can pass along that info....
Out of the embarassing and meager four pinball machines that Game Works had, two (or 50% for the math majors out there) were broken.
The bar/grill thing was a joke. We waited 20 minutes at a table with menus open before the dude even said, "Hey, would you guys like some food or something?"
The game selection was horrible. I put $20 on a card thinking that I'd be in and out of that place all weekend, before even investigating the machines. Bad idea on my part, and I won't be returning to that place when I go to PAX next year. Anyone who's interested in playing some games, hit up Stoney's (Stoney's ) for some good, well maintained classic games, a very good selection of pinball, and some tasty hot dogs.
Fuck Game Works.

If you wanted pins you should have hit up Shorty's downtown. That place is awesome.
Pins generally are pretty hard to maintain for most techs - especially when they're being pounded on like they are at GameWorks. I'll cry at people about that when I get a chance.
But submit your opinions here - the company actually reads those. *thumbs up*
What a great way to make a bunch of other gamers HATE your little spoiled rich kid. Good thing no one got their gamer tag. Or I bet the next time they played a FPS they would be a walking target and getting tea bagged all over the place!
so, at a convention devoted to video games, at which there were several rooms which existed for the sole purpose of free video games, you guys are angry that you were unable to pay for video games?

Some of us rather enjoy (and are old enough) a few good drinks while playing, and not all of us are from areas that have arcades full of actual cabinets.

gameworks is infamous for horrible maintenance practices. i was in gameworks before the prepax movie on thursday, and the star wars trilogy game didn't work, the drumming game was missing the right side cymbal, and there were several other games with "out of order" signs on them.
For an arcade it had a surprising lack of good fighters... or working machines. Although that initial D game where you sat in a helicopter-motion-machine was pretty cool.

Which fighters were missing?
SC3, MvC2, SF3:3S: Tekken 5: DR, Samurai Shodown V(I?), SvC (yuck), ... those all should have been in fine working order since we play on them regularly. The Virtua Fighter 5 machine was indeed out of order and the board is on its way to or back from Japan due to game defects outside of GameWork's hands.

You should either:
a) be specific about what was wrong where - I'll pass that along to the techs who can DO something about it, thus fixing the situation for the future;
or
b) submit the specific broken game problems to the website feedback form I gave earlier, which will do the same thing the long way around.
I'd bet they're waiting on parts for the games you mention, but I'll check anyways.
There's a number of GameWorks around the country - are you referring to your local GameWorks or the Seattle GameWorks? The guys in Seattle have been pretty responsive when you let them know that something is wrong. They are probably too reactionary - they don't stock enough parts on-hand for my tastes, but that's pretty common for all arcades, especially with the parts specialization these days.
As indicated, I go to GameWorks pretty regularly and speak with the tech/staff, and can hold my own on cabinet / game maintenance. Please be specific if you have some hardware critique for GameWorks and I'll get that added to their work list if possible. Or if you're sad about some missing game PLEASE submit that to the feedback form on http://gameworks.com - they do listen, but you have to speak to them via that channel. *thumbs up*
I'd be more cheezed off at GameWorks, honestly, than some guy who probably didn't know PAX from a hole in the ground. Yah really think he sat there going "Oooh, yes, I think I'll hold my kids function the same night as this Large Nerd Convention, just to piss them off!"
GameWorks knows when and where PAX is, and if it made them more money to rent the whole place out for a night than to stay open so PAXites could show up...*shrug* that's their lookout.
I was at Gameworks tonight (Monday) and the Enforcers were having a post party there. Most likely throw by the big wigs at PA. Saw Robert Khoo there, so that tipped me off. Of course, half of the god damn arcades were busted. What a bunk place they are running.
Arenanet rented out Gameworks for Saturday and after 9pm let EVERYONE in for the fun. They had a 3 hour party for VIPs first (which was fun) but then opened it up to everyone. So I see no problem there.
And yes, there were like 20 broken machines. There was hardly enough for everyone to play.

1. They didn't "open it up"...their reservation ended.
2. For everybody trying to defend Gameworks as having their games working, here are some of the games I noticed today that weren't working (hard to remember everything):
1. DDR Extreme
2. Drummania
3. One of the newer fighting games, Tekken 5 maybe?
4. Gauntlet: Dark Legacy
5. One of the Ghost Squad machines
6. One of the machines that were at the very end of the shooter area. Time Crisis?
7. That crazy Jungle Game that you had to get into and move a gun around (only one gun worked).
and probably many more I can't remember right now. I noticed a lot throughout the weekend and some were fixed today that were broken earlier, and some were broken that worked fine earlier.
Not such if I'll go to GameWorks, the group I went with alone probably spent over $300 on Booze and Cards....but I can't stand the sight of another stupid sign that says "This game doesn't work because we are working to increase your enjoyment at GameWorks!"
Still, ArenaNet renting the place out for the night was pretty dickish of them. Now I know for certain that I'll never play guild wars.
christ, what a crybaby you are
No need to get personal. If you're going to post something that has no information or redeemable substance at all, just spare everyone the trouble and don't.
I really don't see how ArenaNet renting the place for three hours during which most PAX activities were still running is really a big deal. The game you wanted to play was probably broken anyway. :P
Lame that it was closed down in the hours when PAXers could have used it the most, though--especially all those people with credit left on game cards who don't live in Seattle, and were leaving.

I've never seen a Dance Maniax machine before, so they get cool points for having one of those.
Same with the Taiko and Pop'n Music Fever. I didn't think any corporate arcade would ever have a Pop'n cabinet on hand.
It sucked that they were closed on Sunday, but we lived.

you're whining that someone ponied up the money you don't have to rent out a venue for a few hours as if you have some god given right to go there any time you want
gameworks offers the option to rent the entire venue, they legitimately paid the money to do so, and all you can do is cry because someone bought the ball you wanted to play with but couldn't afford
if you're going to cry like a little baby publicly, be prepared to be ridiculed for it you big baby

Freeplay was open for a ridiculously long time, like 2am.
Except on sunday when the con closed at 6 and someone had gameworks rented.
