This has potential. I like the overall outfit and setting. If you're going anywhere with this, definitely work on the anatomy/stance a little more and refine the face/hair. Nice stuff, though.

really cute greeting card vibe. i like it. is this you're style or somehting random?

Wow, I completely missed this post. The really cute greeting card vibe isn't how I draw all of the time, pretty much just when I draw stuff for my boyfriend (like the love and cookies one). I actually drew him a whole story book when he was away for a long time that is all cutesy looking and super happy. Maybe I'll post it in it's own thread, even though it's from a couple of months ago. I'll try to scan some of my other stuff too that isn't so much like this.

Here's another doodle for him from tonight:

Nice - the ones with a lot of black wouldn't look out of place as band t-shirts, I think. Though you might want to make the figure in the first image a little more dynamic - maybe make his thighs coming towards the viewer a little more.

Just out of curiosity, what techniques were you trying?

Ravenshadow - It's so close but I'm not sure you're getting it :(

    • Lets assume that the light is coming from the... top right. Now every single object that is CLOSER to the top right portion of the picture but NOT in direct shadow needs to go UP a tone, but mostly on highlights. That means the black cloth needs even a touch of white. The light skin needs even more light. The white frills, yes, even need MORE white at the shoulder.

    • Don't be afriad of coloring over or outside of your lineart layer. When you color over them with white, it adds a luminescent feel to the figure. It blurs slight imperfections and tricks the eye into thinking that the lines are correct.

    • The light comes DOWN from the top, so it hits the shoulder first. The shoulder should have some of lightest local tones on the figure. The greys should be at their whitest, the blacks should be at their whitest, the whites should be at their whitest. That's not to say that blacks BECOME white or greys BECOME white, it's that they are as light as realistically possible.

    • Nothing should ever be as bright as the shoulder. The leggings at the bottom are a brilliant white, where they ought to be greyer. In fact, the white on the leggings is EXATLY what I'd expect to see on her bare clavicle (collar bone) as well as the white frill of her top on her shoulder.

    • Next on the list would be addressing reflected light. The arm on the right should be getting some reflected light from the breast and from the stomache. Two spots; as an artist you have to eb good about conveying 2 independant sources of reflected light. The face should be getting some from the bottom (directly from the shoulder, so it might be more intense than the rest of the reflected light).

First I'd work on the primary lighting, though.

I hope this helps. I really wouldn't be critting if I didn't think that you would benefit. It's a decent figure and I think that the "coloring" (in this case, shading) can make it amazing.

Oh, and that should be official sanctioned uniform for all 20-30 yeard old nurses.. maybe some good looking 40's :) If you see cleavage AND bare midrift, you know you have a classy woman on your hands.

I knew I skimped on the reflected light when I did this. Reflected light is always such a pain in the ass to figure out.

Maybe I'll take one more pass at this to address some of the things you pointed out before I move on.

well, you're so close it'd be a shame to quit at this point. The weird thing is: most people will flatten their figures out when they shade them. They will make them too light or too dark. You have made yours too neutral. Now, wheras the other people have to almost entirely repaint their figures, yours just need to be pushed to both extremes.

I could paint over that pic (your pics are easy to paint over to fix because of this) and show you more of what I mean with more instructions if you'd want. I'm at work now, but when I get acces to PS, if you actually think it would help, I'll gladly paint over it a bit and show you what I mean.

If you just want to move on I won't waste my time though. I just hope the next one is that much better.

If I'm gonna take one more pass at it then a paint over would actually hurt, 'cause I'ld end up reproducing what you show me.

It's something I need to get right on my own so I can use what I learn in the next one.

If I fuck up the second pass, then by all means a paintover would be cool.
 Your description was good enough though, that I think I understand what you mean.
