Half-Life 2: The Mods

So I've been playing alot of Half-Life 2 lately, and I was looking for recommendations for mods. I checked out Synergy, but it's not quite what I was expecting. I thought it was a co-op of H-L's campaign, but sadly it's not.

Anything else I should check out?

    Yes it is.

    Just load HL:S in Synergy.

Also, does this really deserve it's own target.

OP: are you looking for single-player, or multiplayer? We had a good thread going with Zombie Panic: Source until everyone dropped off the face of the planet. :(

I joined a game and it was like "ESCAPE THE PRISON!" and it was a room full of jail cells with zombies in it.

    I don't recall such a level in H-L2.

Synergy just allows anything to be played in co-op mode - including shitty custom maps. Either host or join an HL2 campaign server. There's a Synergy thread here as well, but ideally you need to be planning to go through it with a buddy and just call him/her on the phone.

I would suggest SMOD. It adds a bunch of (mostly) fun new guns, a couple of changes to levels and bullet time with actual projectiles. Also you can kick people. In the face.

Antlion Defense is a good stress reliever/raiser.

You get a few turrets to set up, some friendly troops to move around, and basically you have to sit and fight off wave after wave of Antlions, right out of that fort scene from Starship Troopers.

They did? Really? That's awesome, that guy did amazing work with that mod. I love hearing about people who make mods getting job offers from Valve and Epic, etc. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :D

Also, I second SMOD. It adds a bunch of goofy weapons, some graphical effects, the ability to use iron sights with most guns, bullet time, the kick, and adds some extra bad guys to the main campaign. Like Combine with energy shields and faceplates plus rocket launchers. Awesome mod, there's nothing like going into slo-mo, kicking a barrel over a defensive position, then shooting it and blowing it up over some badguys, then running and jump kicking someone in the face. Also, it allows you to eat gibs from badguys for health. Jesus, I have to install it again.

Has anyone played Resistance & Liberation?

I saw it came out on PHL. It's always looked good, and I usually try to support the HL2 mod community, but I considered downloading it and realized that I could just go back to playing MOH: Airborne on my 360. Ehh, I'm WWII'ed out.

It was good, but I wouldn't call it better than HL2. Mainly because in a few places I had no idea where to go. In HL2 it's pretty clear where you're supposed to go to continue.

I've always been fond of SMOD: Tactical. I've played through HL2 with this mod at least half a dozen times compared to two for the original Vanilla HL2. The only problem is that it loads kind of slow on my ancient computer.

I can't wait for Black Mesa: Source, the full remake of HL1 in the Source engine. I heard mention somewhere of an 'Opposing Source' and Blue Shift: Source, but not for a year or so now.

Anyone know about the HL1 remake mods?

I used to be really excited for Black Mesa Source, but its reached that point where it's been in development so long I have a lot of difficulty caring much anymore, sort of like Duke Nukem Forever or Spore.

Here's a tidbit from their front page:
    Merry Christmas Black Mesa fans!

Granted, I'll still probably get it if it releases, but the anticipation is no longer there.

For Minerva, you should just run the .exe and restart Steam and it should show up in your games list in Steam.

I think he means SMOD. Just stick the SMOD folder into your steam/steamapps/sourcemods folder.

Seconding Mistake of Pythagoras. A bit rough around the edges, but makes up for it in personality and novelty. Having the Combine hold you down against one of the more abstract threats of video gamedom is quite a feeling.

And now I shall have to check out Minerva.
