Rumour (debunked) - ICO 3 discussion

LewiePLewieP Registered User regular
edited September 2008 in Games and Technology
Update: This rumour appears to be false, it was just a mockup some dude made for a competition or something...

Anyway, Team ICO are still making a new game, so I guess this thread still has a purpose.

This is the reason I will have to eventually own/borrow a PS3.

This site has just gone live, featuring some pretty ambient music, and this teaser image:

ico3os2.png

Which translates "ICO 3: The Queen", and aparently it will be released in Japan on the 9th of October 2009, just over a year away.

Previously, this image was shown on a job listing entry:
277530207064736b85eeodb2.jpg

Eurogamer also put up this article talking about it:
Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has promised the next game from Fumito Ueda will be "really, really good". Phew.

Ueda, of course, is the man who brought us Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. In the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine (as reported on NeoGaf), Yoshida says, "I started the ICO project. Ueda-san joined my team in Japan as a cinematic animator, but he created a short movie and presented it to me and said, 'I want to make this game.'

"I said, 'Yes, let’s do it, but you have never made a game. We have to have experienced people do it,' so it took a while, recruiting one person at a time. And because Fumito Ueda doesn't compromise, we had to move the development from PSone to PlayStation 2. Then I couldn't complete the game because I moved to the United States." What a palaver.

But Ico did make it onto the shelves, and so did Ueda's next game - eventually. "It took four years and the second game took four years too. So I started calling them the 'Olympic Team'," Yoshida revealed.
"They haven’t released a PS3 title yet - of course not - they’ll take four years! But they have something really, really good on the way."

Four years, eh... Well, Shadow of the Colossus was released in Europe in February 2006. Could it be we'll have to wait until 2010 for Ueda's next title? It had better be really, really good.

If you haven't played either ICO or it's pseudo follow up Shadow of the Colossus, I strongly urge you to track them down. ICO is a puzzle platformer, but it's so much more than that. SOTC is a boss rush action game, but it's so much more than that.

I should also say thank you to Centipeed. He bought me ICO as just a random act of awesome generosity, had he not, I may have never got around to playing what is now one of my favourite games ever.

Edit: How did I forget. The site also implies they will be showing something at TGS, which is the 9th to the 12th of October.

Even if it's been unnamed, we've all known that a new Team ICO game was on the way for the PS3.

There is so much going for the 360 though. ICO 3 is the sole reason why I wanted a PS3 over a 360.

Oh same, that is a huge part of the reason I went for a 360 and not a PS3. I just mean this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

SOTC was the second game in the ICO series.

I have two and a half reasons for a PS3.

    The Team ICO title

    LittleBigPlanet

And the special version of MGS4 whenever that comes out (since it's not confirmed or anything it's only worth half).

But you bet your ass once the Team ICO game gets dated I am going to be saving for a PS3. Some games truly are worth buying a console for in order to play them. ICO and SotC would have been worth the cost of a PS2, so...

That is not the real Sony site, however. It's for tigmagazine.com, which leads back to Team Ico Games Magazine.

Is that really Team Ico's blog? Just a little skeptical because if I get my hopes crushed I will be pissed.

Why not just buy a ps3 too, just pick it up next year christmas time it'll definitely be at least $100 cheaper and you'll probably want a bluray player by then. I had all three consoles last gen and I eventually plan on buying all three this gen. Its nice having the freedom to play any game.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

May 2009: Microsoft announced ICO 3 for Xbox 360, one month before PS3 version comes out.

In all seriousness, is SotC considered to be ICO 2? Or did I miss something COLOSSAL big (teehee)

But yeah this game itself might not be a system seller, but with LittleBigPlanet and MGS4 it will cave a lot of people I'm sure. I mean just imagine it in the highest of definitions.

I believe Shadow was originally known as NICO, which is a pun on ICO and the Japanese word for 2

Not officially. Some things in SotC indicate that it may be an Ico prequel.

Ueda's team is identified as "Team ICO," so the "ICO 3" bit may just be meant to label it as their third project.

I actually own both of the first two games but I've barely touched them. I played up until the first save point in Ico and I think I beat three colossi in SOTC. The last one I fought was a big bird I think.

I should play through these some day.
